Q: Abdominal Pain?
I have had abdominal pain off and on for about 4 months. It feels like gallbladder pain, but I had my gallbladder removed about 9 years ago. Any suggestions as to what it could be? I’m not sick or debilated by this but it is uncomfortable at times.

A: Call your doctor please!! I am having my gallbladder out next week and my doctor and I talked about everything about what can happen after having your gallbladder out. My best friend had an ovarian cyst and we had the same exact pain… so PLEASE call your doctor and get checked out!
Make sure you haven’t eaten anything fried or with a lot of fat… that can upset your stomach for up to weeks since you don’t have a gallbladder to process it.

Good luck!! :)

Q: abdominal pain??
my gf suffers from horrible abdominal pains during her period…can anyone tell me any home remedies as so as to ease the pain???she tried painkillers but most of the times dont work at all!thank u

A: have her try using a heating pad across her tummy for 15-20mins at a time. wrap the heating pad in a small towel first-don’t apply it directly to the skin.

playtex makes a heating pad she can safely wear all day that sticks to the outside of her underwear. it’s called Menstrual heat therapy. it’s about 4.00 for 3 pads at any local store. i use them alot and i’ve found that the heat is a life saver….

Q: Abdominal pain?
I’m having alot of pain in the upper right abdominal area, it starts out really subtle and then over a few seconds flares up to make me almost buckle over it stays constant at gut wrenching pain for about 10 – 30 seconds and then fades away as quickly as it started. it usually goes away slowly after I drink some water. Any idea what this is?

A: Hey dear, I am sorry if its wrong it usually happen’s after a series of binge drinking session’s and mostly in empty stomach.. main reason’s are no or less fluid’s in the body ….. try drinking water ,water lots of in regular interval’s … trust me it vanishes in 24 to 36 hour’s and will never peek in ….. don’t forget to eat something healthy and stay away from alcohol …. for a while ….. eat lot’s of fruit’s like melon’s,pineapple and oranges … it will definetely help … t c

Q: Abdominal PAIN!!!?
For about a month I have been having abdominal pains.
They come and go all over the stomach.
*I pretty much always have a bad pain on the right side ( where appendix is) I have had mine out
* The pain has recently come on to the left side too
* Pains up and down the right side of abdomen that come and go
* The pain near appendix is at its worst just before I empty bowels and after
* There has been blood in my stool three times
* I barely have to empty bowels. I mainly only empty them every four days because I dont need to go ( I dont have to strain/ push when I go/ it is all very easy except for pain near appendix
* Pain on inner top right thigh (not all the time)
* most of the aches in stomach are dull
* It hurts to push in on certain areas
*no appetite – after 1 bite i am full

I have been to 3 doctors and they are all baffled. One has ordered a colonoscopy but he doesn’t think it will achieve anything.
Has any1 been through this?? Or know what my symptoms represent??

A: Have the colonoscopy and an endoscopy. You need to have a thorough examination of your digestive system. Bloody stools are not normal and should not be taken lightly. Persistent pain is also something to take seriously. As for your bowel pattern, that is okay as long as that is normal for you. People dwell on the fact that everyone should be going every day or every other day. But in your case you go every 4th day, which is fine..as long as your stools don’t cause you discomfort while going.
However, when there is blood in the stool, that isn’t good..especially visible blood. Get it checked out!!!!!! The colonoscopy will examine your bowels while the endoscopy will examine other areas of the system. You can also have an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy performed as well.

Q: What types of abdominal pain are associated with anxiety?
I’ve been having anxiety problems for a long time now, and the severity varies greatly.
But recently, I’ve been under a lot more stress due to school and other things.
I’ve been having abdominal pains the past few days and was wondering if it could be anxiety.

Are there certain types of abdominal pain that are more likely to be caused by anxiety?

A: Kristin, sorry about your ongoing difficulties with anxiety. I have experienced a lot of that myself.

Here’s a little info.

Your body is where emotions are felt. That means that you can feel physical sensations related to your emotions anywhere in your body.

And certain parts of our bodies are closely linked to our emotions. The digestive tract is one of those areas.

We even have lots of expressions that give evidence of this:
- butterflies in my stomach
- gut reaction
- go with your gut
- don’t have the guts (to do something)
- feeling gutsy

Doctors are now saying that somewhere between 85 and 95% of all ailments are stress-related.

So I’d say, yep, the abdominal pains you’re feeling could be caused by your anxiety. Your body is telling you that to be healthy, you need to calm your anxiety.

And I know you didn’t ask for advice, but I just can’t help myself here. Definitely go to a medical practitioner to have it checked out.

And, learn some calming methods – for your tummy’s sake and the rest of you too.

I recommend the book Finding Serenity in the Age of Anxiety by Robert Gerson. And I recommend learning EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques). Those two things have helped me enormously.

Q: Is lower abdominal pain and excessive hunger a first sign of pregnancy?
For the past week I have been having lower abdominal pain on and off. It isn’t unbearable but it is a little uncomfortable. I ran for a bus yesterday and the pain got a bit worse and hurt to sit down. I also have noticed I am hungry a lot more and eat a lot more too.
Could this be a first sign of pregnancy?

A: Yes, definitely could be! I know at the beginning of my pregnancy I was hungery all the time. It only lasted about two weeks though & any weight I put on then has come of already & i’m only 16 weeks gone now.

Q: How do you know if you have abdominal pain or just a stomach ache?
When my tummy hurts, I don’t know whether it is a stomach ache, a pain in the tummy or abdominal pain.

A: This is easy, you divide your abdomen. Your abdomen from the belly button down could be uterus and ovaries. Belly button down and only lower right, appendix. Abdomen and upper right(ones own right) under rib cage, could be gall bladder. After you eat, if you get any burning and any regurgitation could be too much acid in your stomach. Try not sitting down at least 1-2 hrs after eating.

Also gallbladder pain comes more often after you eat greasy foods, fried foods.

Overall see a doctor to see what is going on. You may need antacids, or something for heartburn etc.

Hope this helps some

Q: What causes lower abdominal pain in women?
I’ve been having lower abdominal pain, spotting, and nausea for about 2 weeks now. I’ve been on the birth control MIrena for over a year now. I have no clue to what’s going on.

A: it could be lots of things but you should never play around when it comes to your reproductive system. esp if you want to have kids in the future. you could have a cyst or a condition called endometriosis. call your dr

Q: What could be causing my severe abdominal pain and blood in stool?
am a 15 year old female who has been expieriancing severe abdominal pain for about the past two weeks. It keeps getting worse and worse. It is mainly on the left side, but my entire abdomin is in pain and slightly swollen. I also within the past 2-4 days have been expieriancing a great amount of blood in my stool. Does anyone know what could be going on?

I feel that I should go to the ER, the pain is EXTREMLY severe, but my mom wont take me…what to do?

A: I have been going through the same type of problem myself through the last couple of weeks myself. I know that it is really painful. I went to the emergency because the pain that I am experiencing, I could barely lie down, or lie on my side, and I could barely walk around. The pains were like contraction like pains as if you were giving birth to a baby. You should go to the emergency to get checked out. This is extremely important, as you need to make sure that you get thoroughly checked. You will be asked to provide an urine sample, and also get blood drawn as well. You will also have to likely get an ultrasound to figure out what is going on, and the doctor will also want to press on your abdomen to feel what is going on. Depending on what they find, they might also do a pelvic examination to rule out other problems.

Q: abdominal Pain?
I have posted before, I am having very late periods , (8 days) that last(2days). I am always feeling sick, I went to Atlantic city and noticed that if i am walking or moving for 2 mins constant The pain is constant going. IT started in my right , then left side. Now its in my lower mid section. I have a buldge in my lower abdomen. I took a test yesterday came back neg. what could be wrong, or has anyone have any advice. I have no insurance because i turned 19 my only hope at this time is hospital….I do have unprotected sx with my boyfriend of 4 years , and are very aware of what could happen and would welcome it.

A: ADVISE:
1. Filll in a diary of your cycles and mark the worst days
2. Start regular painrelief (i.e Paracetamol 1g TDS) , do not just wait for the pain to get worse
3. Notice if there is any offensive (smelly) brownish/greenish or yellowish discharge
4. AVOID unprotected sex until you get on top of it
5. mail me back when you have more information(worldciilian17@yahoo.gr)
POSSIBLE explanations:
- endometriosis (unlikely in your age,but you never know)
- chronic pelvic infection (chlamydia more likely)
- painfull ovulation with haemorragic cysts formation
- bad luck
Take care

Q: What can cause sporadic and excruciating upper and lower abdominal pain that causes frequent urinating in men?
My partner has been suffering from this sporadic and severely painful bouts of abdominal pain since he was young but as they were only every now and then and were unpredictable he just put up with them. But of late they have been getting worse and have been keeping him awake all night as well as rendering him basically immobile. They can be in the upper or lower abdomen and cause him to urinate more frequently. What can cause this type of pain? I have no idea what to do for him!

A: It is impossible to guess and too important to give the wrong information.
It could be anything from a serious kidney problem to constipation.
The frequency of micturition could indicate a bladder or kidney infection or could be caused by stress.
Please tell him he must make an appointment to see his doctor.
That is the best thing you can do other than give comfort and support during these episodes.
Notice if anything in particular precedes them, a certain food, stress for example

Q: I have recently been experiencing lower right abdominal pains and also a sharp pain in my anal area why?
I recently had a miscarriage in December and my periods have been regular up until March-April. Now they have been spotty, some light and heavy, at different times throughout the month. For about the last two weeks I have been getting really bad lower right abdominal pains and pain in my anal area feeling like I have to poop, but I don’t. I have never had this before could anyone help me?

A: the pain may or may not be related to your miscarriage – the first thing that strikes me when you say pain in the lower right abdomen is an infection of your appendix… better than asking around here would be to see your doctor before the infection/pain spreads and requires some medical procedure. don’t let people give you random diagnoses

Q: What causes sudden hearing loss with periods and abdominal pain?
I experience sudden hearing loss and vision loss when I have sudden menstrual cramps (Dysmenorrhea). This also happens when I experience abdominal pain related to diarrhea or constipation, which sometimes happens right before my period starts. Sometimes the GI system and the uterus are both affected at the same time.

When I lose my hearing, all I hear is ringing, and everything turns bright, unless Im in a dark hallway. Indoors, I cant see. I think my pupils dilate and the blood flow to my ears constricts. What causes this?

A: There could be a number of possibilities going on such as endometriosis (just using endometriosis as an example only) but the only way to know for sure what is going on is to see your doctor for further evaluation of the situation to see what they think could be going on.

Q: Anyone with abdominal pain had a CT scan and told they had thickening of the small intestine?
My husband has been having severe abdominal pain. CT ruled out kidney stone, masses, blocked bowel, but the report says there are two loops of small intestine that are thickened. The doctor put him on antibiotics for inflammation, and we go back in 2 weeks, but I am worried about this being something serious.

A: This sounds like diverticulosis. The area you described is the most common for diverticulosis – particularly the sigmoid colon. The muscular wall of the colon grows thicker with age. A diet low in fiber can lead to small, hard stools (poop) which are difficult to pass. Thickening of the colon wall may result from increasing pressures required by the colon to eliminate stool. Over time, strong contractions of the colon push the inner intestinal lining outward through gaps in the muscle walls, forming diverticula.
Most patients with diverticulosis have few or no symptoms. The diverticulosis condition may be diagnosed incidentally during testing for other colon problems. The most common symptoms include abdominal cramping, constipation, diarrhea and bloating. These symptoms are related to difficulty of passing the stool along the left colon narrowed by diverticular disease.Antibiotics should help the immediate problem but your husband will need to do something for the long term. If you are the shopper & cook in the household, it will fall to you to purchase & prepare foods that are high in fiber. Change your drinking habits as well – switch to water. Doctors are not good – terrible in fact – when it comes to teaching patients how to eat based on the diagnosis. If you do not receive detailed dietary info on how to prevent further problems, ask for a referral to a registered dietician. You can also Google diverticulosis- you will find a wealth of very good information. Good luck to you. Thanks for the great question.

Q: Why do I get abdominal pain right after eating a banana?
When I look up abdominal pain and bananas, they say to eat bananas because they are bland. Not me. They cause immediate pain. I’ve experimented with other foods to ensure it is in fact bananas causing it.

A: The “worst” criticism of bananas that I can find on the net is that they are a mild laxative. For me, however, they are a strong, almost instantaneous laxative, sometimes accompanied by stomach cramping, which can be severe. I have heard others warn against eating bananas that are too green, saying this causes discomfort for them. My doctor has no information on these effects.

Bananas are known to be a very good source of potassium. My personal theory is that, for some people, ingesting a banana results in an intolerably high level of the potassium in the body. The body attempts to rid itself of the “offending” substance as rapidly as possible.

If I am correct , the use of “lite salt” exacerbates the problem, as lite salt is mostly KCl.

BTW, my doctor is still scratching his head over this

Q: 6weeks pregnant and having persistent lower abdominal pain, should I be worried?
I am not bleeding or spotting but have had this persistent lower abdominal pain for 3days now. Its not on either sides, but feels like PMP. Sometimes it goes away when I am walking or doing other things, but when I lie down it comed back. Has anyone had this kind of experience, is it normal? Should I be worried? I am going for scan tomorrow, otherwise I’ll go crazy with worry. Help!

A: I am 6 wks 4 days and I’ve had cramps for about a week and a half at least. Actually went into the ER doctor about a week ago because they were so bad (but I think I freaked out a bit too- as this is my first pregnany). Went in for a scan a few days later and doctor said everything was fine. If you’re not bleeding I wouldn’t worry too much- Take some Tylenol (no Ibuprofen). Also- I was even spotting, mostly brownish/pinkish and the doctor said that was even normal. They also told me that if you are having pain on one side (although I know you said you aren’t) that it could be from the ovary you conceived off of. Just relax, the stress made mine worse I think and after the doctor did the scan and told me I was ok- I’ve felt quite a bit better. Also, drink lots of water and stay hydrated and rest. Congrats and good luck! Since we’re about on the same week, email me if you have any other questions! Have fun- hope you feel better

Q: I am 39.5 weeks along and this morning am experiencing lower abdominal pain. Could this be the start of labor?
The pain at times feels like sharp twinges, but it is not constant. My uterus does NOT feel like it is contracting. But are these pains/cramping an early sign of labor? (The pain is in my lower abdominal area but is also reaching down to my vagina) Thanks.

A: Sounds like you’re getting ready to start labor…YAY!!!
I had the same thing. Except I didn’t realize I had start labor until I was driving home from the store and the pain was longer than normal and I decided to time the pains.
My uterus didn’t really feel like it was contracting too much, it was more of the pain that radiated from the back to the front for me. I didn’t realize it was tightening until I put my hand on my stomach and I FELT it get tight.
But you probably are going to the doc every week now, so I would as them.

Q: What could be causing my 5 year old little girl’s lower abdominal pain?
She has been complaining of lower abdominal pain on and off all day today and it is starting to worry me. It’s tough with kids because its hard to tell if they are really in pain or not so much. Does anyone have any suggestions for this?

A: This could be gas or possibly a UTI. Take her to her Dr.

Q: My cousin is 11 weeks, 2 days pregnant. Is it abnormal to experience lower abdominal sharp pain on one side?
11 weeks, 2 days pregnant. Experiencing bad sharp lower abdominal pain on one side. No cramping, nor bleeding. Just that sharp irritating pain.

A: If she has had an ultrasound and they know the pregnancy is in the uterus than it is likely just muscles & ligaments stretching. If she has not had an ultrasound she should probably see the doctor to be sure. At any rate it never hurts to call and ask that is what they are there for:)

Q: Lower abdominal pain in the beginning of your second month of pregnacy, What can cause it?
Ok, so I am having lower abdominal pain and it hurts really bad when I move. What could be the cause? I dont think it is cramping. Any ideas? Please help. Thanks in advance!

A: I had this with a couple of pregnancies. My doctor said there is a ligament or muscle that runs from hip to hip across the lower belly and sometimes just the pressure of a baby or uterus on it can cause pain. If it continues, I would advice a maternity belt which helps support your belly as you get further along. Also, if this is your first, sometimes the first one is painful because these muscles haven’t been used in this way before. Hope all goes well. Good luck.

Q: what is cauding my severe lower abdominal pain?
this has happened several times now, where after a sudden urge to use the loo has triggered a sudden lower abdominal pain which is so severe i have been rolling around on the floor, sweating, thirsty, and hyperventilating. this lasts for about 3/4 hr and then eases, but i am left with a very tender abdomon which lasts for hours and feels that it could start again at any moment. the pain is central and feels like a gyny type pain. Any ideas?

A: Hey, I’m NOT a Dr. but how about checking out a Urologist or a Gastroenterologist? Both are good Doctors in their own fields of expertise so look up in the phonebook for each one of these Doctors, tell them your problems and see what they say or there is always the Emergency Room in the closest hospital.

Good Luck.

Q: After I masturbate I get gas a headache lower abdominal pain I also feel fatigued for a day or 2 any ideas?
I’m 16 years old male and for quite awhile now I’ve noticed that after I masturbate I get gas lower abdominal pain a headache and feel fatigued for a day or two afterwords. Also I don’t know if this is related but I wake up frequently to use the bathroom at night. Any ideas why this might be happening or what I could do would be helpful.

A: it could be a number of reason from bladder infection too stress or nerves .so it would be best for you too visit your doctor and let him send you for some test. the sooner you make an appointment the sooner you will know the cause and get proper medication for it .it really sounds like your bladder if it bothers you that much as it is the weekend go too the emergency room

Q: During sex recently I have begun to feel intense lower abdominal pain that sometimes lasts for days.?
My boyfriend and I have had a monogamous sexual relationship for over 4 years and recently like the past 6 months I have been experiencing severe lower abdominal pain during sex that sometimes lasts for days at a time. I found out that I had an ovarian cyst on my right ovary. COuld that be the source of the pain?

A: That sounds like it could be your answer, or he could be hitting your cervix located inside of the vagina. (This part dialates when you give birth…And contractions hurt!) If you are having sex missionary, try a few different positions so that your cervix is out of harms way. Try doggy style, or laying down on your stomach with your boyfriend on top.

Q: Lower abdominal pain caused by lifting toddler?
I have been experiencing a dull pain in my lower abdomen for a day or two at a time for several months now. The pain is the worst in the morning. I have not changed my diet, nor has any of my female cycles changed or been irregular- the only thing I can think of is my nephew who I babysit. Hes quite heavy (40 lbs about – and I’m 20 years old and 120 lbs) and I sometimes lift him, for example yesterday he threw a tantrum and I lifted him up and he proceeded to struggle with me and kick me, today I woke up with the pain again- my question is this- can this kind of lower abdominal pain be cause by lifting a heavy child and/or the kicking, even though i don’t have any back pain?

A: You could just be reaggravating a strained muscle, or I’m sorry to say, you may have a slight herniation. Go to the doctor and mention the possibility and see if they’ll take a look. It may be nothing, but if it is a herniation, the sooner you know, the less damage you’ll do yourself, and they may have to fix it!

Q: Lower abdominal pain and some other things?
I have been having lower abdominal pain , tender breasts , I have been using the bathroom like every 20 minutes , I haven’t started my period and I have also lost 10 Ibs in two days. What I was wondering is if these are signs of pregnancy? Cause I really need to know.

A: I def. had all of those symptoms when I became pregnant, all three times, however each woman is different.
If your period is late, you should be able to test accurately positive/negative for pregnancy.
If you’re going through anything stressful or if you’ve been extra active, that can also delay your period and kinda make your body ache.
I would try taking a preg. test, just in case.

Q: I am worried about the severe lower abdominal pain i felt since yesterday.?
My lower abdomen is painful, I can not even walk straight, talk loud or anything that would connect to my abdomen. I have fever of 39.1 degrees celsius, it’s on and off. I took paracetamol and other pain reliever, but it seems there is no effect to my abdominal pain. I am already finished with my monthly period just a week ago.

A: see a doctor

Q: i have upper abdominal pain with both kidney and lower back pain.can anyone tell me about my disease?
from 15 days i have upper abdominal pain but sometime lower abdominal pain, and also lower back pain, what should i do?
i have been tested my urine but all it is clear.

A: We can’t tell you what this is but I would suggest that you ask your doctor for a CT scan of your abdomen. This could help the doctorsnarrow down what it could be, seriously, it could be a million things……Get some more tests done and let us know…

Good luck,
Jenn

this has happened several times now, where after a sudden urge to use the loo has triggered a sudden lower abdominal pain which is so severe i have been rolling around on the floor, sweating, thirsty, and hyperventilating. this lasts for about 3/4 hr and then eases, but i am left with a very tender abdomon which lasts for hours and feels that it could start again at any moment. the pain is central and feels like a gyny type pain.

Q: Persistent abdominal pain (lower right part), but not appendicitis?
I’ve had an annoying pain and feeling of burden in the lower right abdominal part for a few days. When I run my hand over my stomach I can feel something like a thin hard bump that is nowhere to be found in the left part of my stomach. Sometimes in the evening I have a slight fever of 99.5. I went to the doctor, they ran several tests and all, including the white blood cells account came out normal (the doctor never bothered to palpate my stomach though), so I was told that nothing particularly is wrong.

Is it possible that despite the normal blood cells I have appendicitis? What can that bump possible be?

A: I don’t know what the bump might be.

The pain could be your appendix or ovary perhaps. If your white cell count was okay then your appendix probably isn’t infected.

Are your bowels okay? Are your periods okay? Have you twisted or injured yourself somehow?

Unless you’re very thin I doubt that you’re appendix would be palpable just by running your hand over your abdomen – the appendix lies deeper down in the structures.

If it doesn’t resolve then you’ll need to revisit your doctor and ask for an abdominal ultrasound or at least a physical examination.

Q: Left abdominal pain from below navel to left sides of vagina?
I am 16 years old and I haven’t had my period for about almost 2 months now, I am also a virgin.
I have latley experienced left abdominal pain, which sometimes wakes me up in my sleep. It is sharp and sometimes occurs randomally when I turn over in bed.
It is from lower than my naval to the left side of my abdomen and goes all the way towards my vagina on the left side of the leg next to my vagina.
HELP!

A: Sounds like a cyst or tumor of ovary. At your age it is probably benign (not cancer) but can cause a lot of discomfort. Get it checked out as they can get quite huge. If you get it now, you shouldnt lose your ovary. That can lower your chance to have kids in the future.

Q: what can cause upper left abdominal pain?
I have been having upper left abdominal pain for the past few months, night sweats. I was diagnosed with celiac disease almost 3 years ago. I also have hypothyroidism. I follow my gf diet diligently, any ideas as to what it could be would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

A: It’s not your gallbladder, that is on the right side. I have pain from that myself. It could be stomach related if you have an ulcer or something on the upper left side of your stomach. It could be in your lung or your ribs too. Spleen pain usually hurts in the back and most pancreatic issues don’t cause pain. If you’ve had pain this long, you should see your doctor. I hope it’s nothing serious! Good luck.

Q: Can a Rt hemmorhagic ovarian cyst cause left abdominal pain?
My wife has a 3-4 cm Rt ovarian hemmorhagic cyst she currently has some Rt pain issues but was recently in the emergency room with elevated white count and in addition to the hemmorhagic cyst she had left abdominal pain

A: Yes, I just had my left ovary removed but I had right abdominal pain. It doesn’t make sense to me either but I know that it happens. I have had several cyst over the course of 15 years and the pain has always been on the reverse side of the cyst.

Q: lower left abdominal pain and frequent peeing?
i’ve been having dull kind of shooting abdominal pain on my left side for a couple weeks now. On and off, and i’ve noticed that especially before i go to bed i have too pee a lot more than normal. the pain kind of feels like menstrual cramps but on the other side of my body, and there isn’t anything really abnormal about the pee.

any thoughts as to what may be going on?

A: A kidney infection would cause lower abdominal/back pain and make you feel like you need to pee more.

Q: What should I do about this sever upper left abdominal pain?
I have an extremely sharp pain in my upper left abdomen and it’s been reoccuring for the past week and I know its not constipation but I don’t know what it could be. The pains are so bad I have literally been hunched in a ball crying. I don’t know if this is serious or not or what it could be but it’s definitely not normal. Please help me.

A: Sounds like this isn’t the most pleasant experience. Determing the actual cause of chronic pain is difficult unless you have a history of past medical condtions that would possible attribute to your discomfort. Therefore, since your “sharp pain” in the abdomen has been occuring for the last 9 days, if this pain doesn’t subside, you should request an abdominal ultrasound from your doctor, which would rule out any abnormalities appendicitis, organ obstruction, and so forth. This would at least assure you that the pain might be related to a less serious condition. By the way, its probably not appendicitis as your pain isn’t on the right side. In the interim, tylenol or advil might provide some temporary relief. Hope to be a help

Q: why is my left lower abdominal pain there?
I have just started getting lower left pain at my abdomen.
Its to the left of belly button but lower. Its not bad and comes and goes.
I have no blood in urine that i can see and no back pain.
I urinate ok.
Has anyone experienced this, and if so,what is it?

A: It could be numerous things from having IBS, a mass, hernia, to diverticulitis, who knows. The best thing to do is seek your doctor and have it checked out. If this lasts for days and it does not go away just make an appt and have it checked it out. Better safe than sorry.

Good Luck.

Q: I ovulated 2 days ago, now i have lower left abdominal pain, what can this mean?
I ovulated 2 days ago, now i have lower left abdominal pain, what can this mean?
i thought you were supposed to get this pain befor or during ovulation, not after

A: Are you sure you ovulated 2 days ago? What are you using to determine ovulation? I would have intercourse just in case you are ovulating now. You are right you usually only have the pains before and during ovulation not after. You could also have an ovarian cyst if the pain doesn’t go away or gets worse. best wishes ttc!!!!!!!!!!

Q: I am almost 35 weeks pregnant with mild to moderate lower left abdominal pain. Has anyone had this?
I have had a hacking cough for the last couple of days, and am wondering if this has something to do with it. The pain occurs every couple of minutes, and it’s right under my belly on the left side. I don’t want to overreact, and the pain is not horrible, but I’m just curious to see if other women have experienced this. Thanks!

A: your probley just sore from coughing

Q: Left index finger pain, left ear ache, left abdominal pain?
I have been experiencing pain in my left index finger. The pain can become unbearable as it has not allowed me to sleep. The pain is constant and occurs every couple of minutes throughout the entire day. I also have an ear ache in my left ear and my left side/abdominal hurts. The index finger is very painful. Note: pain on left side only

A: Rheumatoid arthritis, tinnitus and stress in the stomach or intestines. See a doctor, and get tests, hopefully to disprove, yet diagnose.

Q: Lower left abdominal pain during early pregnancy?
I am 4 weeks pregnant. And yesterday I went to the mall, where of course you have to do alot of walking. I got really tired and my back started to hurt ALOT, then I started to get a sharp pain on my lower left abdomen. Kind of like cramps when you run alot, but on my lower left. I had to stop and sit down, b/c I got scared I could have a miscarriage, but is this normal? I feel perfectly fine today. . .

A: It must be normal. I am also 4 weeks pregnant and getting the same exact thing. This is baby number 3 for me and I don’t remember feeling it the first two times, but it’s not accompanied by bleeding or anything so I’m also trying not to be normal. I’m also concerned about a miscarriage, but I’m sure we are both fine. Good luck and Congratulations!

Just thought I would edit my answer. Got cramps like you did and started to spot the day I should have got my period. Am still waiting to hear from my doctor so call yours right away and tell them about the cramping. Don’t do like I did and wait for something bad to happen! Good luck and take it easy, stay off your feet when you can!

Q: why do i have lower left abdominal pain, brown discharge?
i’ve been getting lower left abdomen pain for about 5 months now. it comes and it goes. i started to get it pretty bad last night and i had noticed some brown discharge. today i noticed even more. i finished my period about a week or so ago and i’ve looked for every possible answer. what could it be?

A: Sounds like an issue with your left ovary. Like the first person said, see a doctor.

Q: What is the cause of left abdominal pain combined with headaches?
Sorry. I am asking for my husband because he is not feeling well and I am worried

A: Your ovulating.

Q: I have a question about my lower left abdominal pain?
Hello, i am a 19 yr old young man that has always been decently healthy. I am 5 foot 10 inches and around 160 pounds. For about the last 6 months i have has some weird abdominal pain, It started out with an ache or pulled muscle type feeling (NOT CRAMPS) and from time to time it would go away for a week and them come back for a couple weeks then go away again. Went to the doctors and had a Upper GI and a Lower endoscopy done. They found nothing. I feel like the doctors think i am over reacting but its kinda scary cause now it feels like a dull feeling almost like something inside my stumic. The doctors said i shouldent be worried cause if it was cancer it would have killed me by now. But what should i do would a MRI or CT scan help cause maybe its not in the stumic but on the outside. So idk what should i do?

A: It sounds like you might have appendicitis. A CT scan can help see if you actually have it or not.

Q: Having lower left abdominal pain a week after tubes tied.Is this normal?
had surgery feb 11.stitches taken out feb 15. lower left pain gets worse when i walk for any extended period of time. pain not there all the time.worse by the end of the day.

A: What you are dealing with does not sound normal but I would recommend checking with your doctor as well to see what they say.

Q: Im 6 weeks pregnant (first baby) and have upper left abdominal pain? what can be causing it?
The pain just started today when I woke up in the morning. The stabbing pain is in UPPER LEFT ABDOMEN (near my belly button). The pain lasts 2 seconds and always comes back in 10 mins upto an hour. It is very uncomfortable. Is this something I need to worry about?

A: its okayy
you dont need to worry
i had this exact same thing! its something that comes with pregnancy
its nothing to worry about though it can go on for up to 4 weeks
CONGRATULATIONS!

Q: What would cause severe upper right-side abdominal pain?
What would cause someone to have upper right abdominal pain, bright yellow liquid stool that he complains of burning very bad when it’s passed, nausea, no vomiting, and a low-grade fever? We cannot get a hold of his doctor to find out if this is serious.
He had his appendix out already, this is an older man, not a kid. He’s not really having a bowel movement, just this liquid yellow stuff, but he’s having that fairly often.
He also had his gallbladder removed.

A: He could have a bowel obstruction. When was his last B.M
Call the local Emergency room and ask to speak to a R.N or Dr for that matter.
What did he eat last?? How long has this been going on ? Have you tryed Pepto or Emodium.
I would call the E.R. Its not unusual to have nausea with bowel trouble .
gosh best of luck

Q: What would be the cause of lower right abdominal pain?
I’ve been having pain in my lower right pelvic area. I already been to the OB and there is nothing wrong with my ovaries. What else could be the cause of my pain? It never goes away. Its a constant sharp pain that last all the time…and hurts worse when I run.

A: In females -
1 Appendicitis
2 An ectopic Pregnancy
3 Pelvic Inflammatory Disease as a Result of an STD
4 Something known as a persistent corpus luteum (it’s a fluke of your menstrual cycle)
5 Ovarian cyst

I’d find a different doctor and fast!

Q: What would cause upper right abdominal pain?
For about 9 months i have had upper right abdomen pain off and on. I have been to several doctors and was tested for appendix and ovarian cysts. Once they found nothing, they said it could be a bad pulled muscle. In the last 2 weeks i have started having severe heartburn along with the side pain. I’m tired of being the lab rat. Could this be something to do with my gallbladder?

A: Have you lost weight recently? Have you been on a diet at all? Do you get these pain attacks about an hour after you’ve eaten food? Or when you lay down in the evening after eating? If this sounds familiar then you may be suffering from problems with your gallbladder. I had to have my gall bladder removed..

Q: What to do when you h ave Upper Right Abdominal Pain and already got tests?
Hi all this year around january i had some strong abdominal pain( upper right) it would last hours and the pain would get stuck and i would not be able to breath in. Then i had it 2 days later. then i had it the following week alittle.. so i went to doc to check, he thought it was gallbladder problems sent me to imaging tests, turns out everything is normal. i also had blood tests and were normal.

then i changed my diet eliminating milk. no more meat( just sometimess) no junk food. it got better from that time up to now, i had been fine.

But then this week ( May 2006) i’m having pain there again. this time is not so sharp and i can breath-in, but i have it.. and it seems like a bit higher than the place it was before.

Anyways, what can this be, if docs say i’m fine? what should i do now?

A: I know you said you’ve already had you’re gallbladder tested, but I am suggesting you get it tested again by a urologist. The reason behind this is because he/she can do a test involving dye injected into your gallbladder to see if it is even working.I had the same symptoms for years and had this test done, found out I had a diskenetic(none working gallbladder)that caused me a great deal of pain.I had the laproscopic surgery to have it removed and no longer have that pain.Best wishes on finding out results!

Q: Lower right abdominal pain with lump?
I am having episodes of pain in my lower right abdominal area. A knot forms between my right hip bone and belly button. The knot is extremely painful to the touch and hurts more with some movements, especially coughing. This happens once or twice a week and lasts for about two hours. I have nausea during that time. Has anyone ever experienced this?

A: You may have a hernia or maybe appendicitis – go to web search and go to mayo clinic.com and click on symptom checker – this may help

Have you seen a MD yet – you really should go and get it checked out
especially if the pain persist, worsens or have a fever. Don’t mess around – go see your MD

Q: why am I still experiencing lower right abdominal pain, 2 years after appendectomy?
I have been to three specialists and they are stumped. The only time i feel severe pain is when i stretch or have a number 2 in the loo.

A: It could be adhesions ie: when the abdomen has been opened some time ago little pieces of tissue stick to each other (that’s the easiest way of explaining it) tissue that is meant to glide over each other stick together causing adhesions.

Go see you Dr. and tell him you may have abdominal adhesions following surgery.

Q: I’ve been feeling lower right abdominal pain, with pain radiating down both thighs. What could this be?
I’ve also been feeling pain in my right and left shoulder, in addition to nausea. Could this be symptoms of an ovarian cyst or appendicitis? I don’t have health insurance, and I can’t afford to go into the emergency room because I don’t qualify for there charity program. Please help!

A: where are u from? i work in an ER in nsw, australia, and we dont charge anything, we jus ask for a medicare number, and that pretty well covers it. just make sure u go to a public hospital and not a private one, and yes i would be going to an ER and getting checked, they can also offer pain relief, if panadol is not doin the job.. i always go to the ER instead of the dr… depending on wat it is of course, but i guess, in your situation it sounds like u r letting money over take the importance of your health, and hey, if i was in pain, and had no idea wat it was, i would put my health before my money anyday. just make sure its a public hospital and u should be fine

Q: what can cause sore nipples, metal taste and lower right abdominal pain?
for the last few days I’ve had these symptoms:

i taste metal constantly, even after eating or drinking

my breasts hurt when they’re .. bounced, i guess. and nipples when theyre touched or even brushed.

the pain is sharp, and until today has been across my lower abdomen. now tonight it has been just the right side. it hurts more when i cough or walk around.

any suggestions?

A: Hmm..well, pain on the right side could be appendicitis. Metal taste in mouth..is your mouth bleeding by any chance? Are you pregnant? I don’t know, all your symptoms together don’t really add up to anything I know of.

Q: 18 weeks pregnant very severe abdominal pain on right side?
After i used the bathroom this morning I have had severe right side abdominal pain. So bad that i can barely walk or move. It hurts to go to the bathroom and if I lie down I am okay just a little tender. The nurse said to rest I called back 4 hours later because I was still in pain and she said to come in tomorrow at 1130. Until then has anybody has such severe pain at this stage of pregnancy?

A: i have a lot of pain in the ligaments around (that hold) my uterus. they hurt so bad. so i have to just lay down for a little bit and then they finally stop hurting. or you could have a really big gas bubble. i know that sounds silly, but it could be. or your baby could be pinching a nerve on that side.

but yes, no matter what we say here, make sure you do call your doctor back if the pain persists.

Q: Has anyone ever had right sided abdominal pain while walking?
I have been having really sharp right sided abdominal pain while I walk. I usually don’t have it right away but after a min of walking it starts. It won’t stop until I stop walking. It’s really hard on me too because my job is nothing but walking. Any ideas what this could be? Oh yeah a week ago I had bad pain around the belly button I talked to the dr about that and he said it was probably just stretching. That pain is gone now, I just have new pain in my right side.
I am also 20 weeks pregnant
I am also 20 weeks pregnant

A: its just a muscle ache, or ligament stretching.
it won’t hurt the baby but when you feel it you really shoud take a seat for a min till it subsides

Q: Right sided abdominal pain at 32 weeks pregnant?
I am just past 32 weeks pregnant and this is with my first child. Over the past 24 hours I’ve been having pain in my lower right side. It goes from moderate to almost severe. It’s constant with mild throbbing and if I make quick movements, it hurts worse. Also hip pain on the right side. The hip pain I brushed off as baby laying funny, but should I be more concerned with this abdominal pain or is it normal? Could it be causing my hip pain? Any ideas what is causing either?

A: does it kinda shoot down your leg? if so, it sounds like sciatica – the sciatic nerve that runs through your hip/lower back and down your leg. you could say it’s the baby sitting on it, but when this flairs up, it is often a symptom of a potassium deficiency. eat bananas…have one every day and it should clear up in about a week.

Q: Any help for severe diahrrea and upper right abdominal pain?
I have had severe diahrrea for almost 6 weeks with severe indestigestion and GERD and upper right side abdominal pain, headaches, dizziness, fatigue and shortness of breath. I have had every test that you can think of. I had my gallbladder out almost 6 years ago.My doctor found nothing but ileutis and IBS-D. But all I was told to do is eat my fiber and go on diet. I called up today and I was in pain he told me to go to the ER. But I can’t afford to go to the ER for the 3rd time. What can I do or does anyone know what this is?

A: Have you tried something simple like pepto-bysmol? My daughter had her gall bladder out 2 years ago and often has the symptoms you describe. She said that a huge part of her body’s filter system is gone so food bother’s her periodically. All she can do treat the symptoms with pepto-bysol or gasX and ride out the storm until it passes. Good luck to you dear girl.

Q: What causes lower right abdominal pain, besides appendicitis?
I had a 7 cm. left ovarian cyst drained and biopsied, (benign) which stopped all pain for 1 week. My doctor thought it was referred pain, and doesn’t think a 2 cm. right ovarian cyst should cause any pain. She prescribed pain medication. My appendix doesn’t appear in CT scans, so it’s considered healthy.

A: You tell her to kiss my black cats a s s.
No..appendix normally DOESNT appear on the CT scans. You could have endometriosis. If I were you I would go seek a surgeon or another Dr. If that bursts that is life threatning.

Q: I have had chronic lower right abdominal pain since august, Ive been in the hospital where they did surgery?
to remove my appendix, the pain didnt go away! I have been in and out of doctors and emergency rooms and noone seems to be able to tell me what it is but it is affecting my quality of life and I am 24 but feel like I am 90! If anyone has had anything similar please let me know!

A: There is a possibility of scar tissue that may have built up after the appendix surgery and they would need to go back in and remove it because it could have attached to an area that your body uses to move and could account for feeling so bad at your age. If I were you I’d contact the doctor that preformed the surgery and tell them and have them do a sonogram or MRI to see what is going on and hopefully they can correct the problem asap toi improve your health. I have had many surgeries and this is a common issue when ine has surgery.

Q: My wife is 5wk pregt and she is getting little pain on lower right side of abdominal thru out day. Plz respond
She is having low intensity pain on lower right side abdominal . Pain vanishes when she have food. Please tell me wht shall i do ?

A: This is completely normal so both of you rest assured! Don’t let her stress out over it be sure and tell her its normal. I was about 5/6 weeks along and experienced the same thing up until I was about 12 weeks along. I rushed into the ER first thing because I was so scared I was losing the baby ( I had been trying to concieve for almost a year and so everything scared me in the beginning ) When I went into the ER with these pains in my abdomen the doctor told me they were completely normal. Its from your uterus stretching so much and all your muscles in your abdomen and all your organs “making room” for baby. But a lot of it comes from the uterus stretching so much. I’m sure you’re thinking…but in the first trisemester you don’t even show and in the end your uterus is huge…well the amount that the uterus stretches just in the first trisemester is the biggest percentile of change. The uterus is multiplying itself in size by 5/6 times!! After that the growth is pretty much gradual even though the uterus is getting huge hehe. Good luck to her with the pregnancy and congrats on the babe! I wish her a safe and healthy delivery!!

Q: moderate lower and side abdominal pain and pain during sex?
abdominal pain feels a bit better when i lay down. not on my period, wondering what it could be. also i had a sharp pain while trying to have sex, i was on top but didnt hurt when we were on our side. p.s not a virgin! lol any thoughts?

A: you better check below – see “Pain During Sex”

Q: what could left side abdominal pain and nausea be?
ive had this upper left side abdominal pain and nausea since march. for the past month my whole body has been shakey including my hands. i loose my balance very easily. ive had headaches everyday and my hands and legs have been getting the pins and needles sensation. my eyes also hurt.
the appendix is on the right side.

A: It could be a problem with the appendix. Maybe you should see a Doctor to be sure.

Q: What would cause left side abdominal pain?
It is sorta located under my rib cage and hurts more when you push on it. Its not in my front or back, just on my left side but radiates towards my back. Not horrible pain, just enough to get my attention. Went to doc and she said it was probably a pulled muscle but doesn’t feel better with meds.

A: You don’t say how long you have been on the meds. They do take time to work. Maybe after 4 – 5 days, if you are not better, go back to the doctor for further testing. If it is a pulled muscle, it will take 2 – 3 weeks to heal.

Q: Almost 27 weeks and slight lower right side abdominal pain?
Hi I am about 27 weeks pregnant this week! Woohoo but for the last few days I have some slight pain on my lower right side of my abdomen. Its at any time walking or sitting. What do you think it could be?

A: I am also 27 weeks this week and I have the same thing I brought it up at my last appt and my mid wife said it was ligament pains….I was also concerned b/c I couldn’t even walk and it hurt so bad across the bottom of my abdomen but she says its normal and the baby was probably sitting low and was cause the ligaments to strecth and hurt reall bad….so I am guessing its just round ligament pain and the baby might be mostly on your right side….if your in real horrible pain like not even being able to tolerate then see a doctor, but if not then call your doctor if your concerned to ease your mind!
Good luck and congrats!!!!
Yay to May babies when are you due???

Q: what causes right side abdominal pain?
My girlfriend always complains about right side abdominal pain. She once had an intestinal torsion but it was surgical corrected. What do you think could be the problem now?

A: Right side abdominal pain is a classic symptom of appendicitis, she needs to see a doctor as soon as possible. It can be serious and if the appendix ruptures it can kill her.

Q: I have lower right side abdominal pain?
My throat was very itchy today while I was picking my dog up from the vet and I began to cough quite a lot. Every time I coughed I had a sharp pain in my right side abdominal area(around the ovaries I suppose). It also hurt when I laughed, but it stopped hurting and hasnt’ came back up yet.

Should I be worried or is it just nothing?
I thought that too and not saying it isn’t, but I haven’t been coughing at all. The first time I coughed it hurt.
But then again, I’m sort of a hypochondriac. I always am thinking the worst.

A: Sounds like a muscle. We use all kinds of muscles when we cough and laugh. As a matter of fact, I am just now getting over a rough bout of flu … and now the coughing has begun in earnest. I am experiencing the same pain, on the same side of my body.

Q: I have a constant lower right side abdominal pain and it hurts whenever i sneeze up in my upper abdominal area?
I went to the hospital right away and they ran several tests and nothing showed up. So they sent me home on strong pain medication that hardly takes any pain away. I am a mother of 3 kids and babysit young children for a living what the hell do i do next? im in severe pain!!!

A: GO to another doctor. Get another opinion. It could be the appendix.

Q: Right side abdominal pain – varies between very sharp and dull?
I have had this for 2 days now, I went to the hospital and they told me I might have a bladder infection, so they sent me home with antibiotics which I have been taking. However, the pain has not lessened, if anything its gotten worse. Has anyone experienced something similar, or knows what this could be?

A: ask the people at the hospital if it might be your appendix, it is on your right side after all.

Q: Black stools, lower right hand side abdominal pain?
I have pain in the lower right hand side of my abdomen. It hurts all the time, but more when I move. It also hurts more when you press into where the pain is then take your hand off. I have also started to have black stools (poo). I used to have black stools when I used to take iron supplements but I have not had them in a while.
Do I have anything wrong with me?

A: In the absence of iron therapy black stools are of concern as they may represent changed blood. This coupled with abdominal pain really means you must attend your GP for investigations, soon.

Q: “i am 6 weeks pregnant and have lower right hand side abdominal pain, could you please tell me the reason for?
“i am 6 weeks pregnant and have lower right hand side abdominal pain, could you please tell me the reason for this”

A: thats normal.. its just ur body getting use to the changes.. if it gets worse then maybe u should call ur doctor.. U can never be to safe when it comes to ur pregnancy..

Q: Can hemorrhoids cause left lower side pain and lower abdominal pain?
No bleeding just anal pains with side pain

A: No – hemerrhoids will cause anal pain and bleeding but not abdominal pain.

If you’re female – could be ovaries or intestines.
If you’re male – could be intestines.

The appendix is on the right side but it’s possible to have deferred pain to the left side. A way to test for appendicitis would be to lay down on your back and have someone tap the bottom of your right foot in the heel area fairly hard (but not jarring) – if this causes pain in your abdomen then it could be appendicitis.

Could also be ovarian cysts, fibroids of the uterus, or a stomach virus or bacterium.

Q: i have a right side abdominal pain?

Q: Can upper abdominal pain be a sign of diabetes?
I’ve had upper abdominal pain, and my doc diagnosed me as having a mild case of pancreatitis (no tests were done). I’ve had a numbness on and off in my left thigh and left arm, back pain on the same side. I also have a “floater” in my vision sometimes. I think I could have diabetes (my brother has it who is 37, I’m 30). Does anyone think these are all signs of diabetes?

A: Where is the pain exactly in your upper abdomen?

I’m not saying that no tests need to be done, but pancreatitis is very distinct in where the pain is, and what it feels like…

It could be a sign of diabetes, go get a test kit and find out… they’re only like 15 bucks from rite aid, get a cheap one… they all tell you the same thing…

I’m diabetic, from having pancreatitis… And when you’re having an onset of pancreatitis, it’s not uncommon to have a fluctuation in your blood sugar… Your pancreas is what creates your insulin…

I had half of my pancreas removed, because of tissue necrosis, worst pain ever… Be glad you have a mild case… It’s interesting that your doc didn’t admit you to the hospital and stop any intake, of anything…. Pancreatitis can easily get worse…. What i’d recommend (i’m not a doctor, but i almost died from it, and i’m in nursing school), is not to eat for a few days… Thats what they’d normally do in the hospital, that and give you pain meds…

I’ve never seen anyone admitted to the hospital with pancreatitis, that they didn’t starve for a few days. Of course, they usually have IV Nutrition… But hey… I’ve done it to myself during small bouts when I didn’t have the time to sit in the hospital for a few days…

Any food stimulates the pancreas to create enzymes… Stimulation of an already inflamed (-itis) pancreas (pancreat/o-) can make it worse… Think about it, would you jump on a broken leg?

As for the diabetes… You’ll know when you have it, get a test monitor, and check your glucose readings (AFTER you’re done with pancreatitis, you’ll get false readings if your pancreas is out of whack)… You’ll know, the first major sign is urinating like, every 5 min… seriously, every 5 min…

I know why you’re probably paranoid about numbness… Because diabetics are known for loss of sensation in their extremities.. But, you’re only 30, and honestly… I doubt you’d be experiencing any of that by now, but… I guess it’s possible… You wouldn’t have been looked over for that long, for you to be having numbness…

Q: What are some causes of mid/upper abdominal pain?
Very early Sunday morning (3:30am) I woke up with night sweats and abdominal pain around my belly button. Throughout the day I have been having a little bit of trouble breathing (not much) and the pain is getting worse. It seems to be around my belly button and also an inch or so below sternum, kinda towards the right/upper side. I did throw-up once a couple hours ago when I was hit with a severe pain in my stomach, but other than that I don’t feel sick, so I am ruling out the flu. It’s steadily getting worse (the pain and the sweats), but not ‘out of control’ yet. I am 27yrs old, male, in good health (besides this). I have noticed at nighttime (before this event) I started having some troubles breathing, but ONLY at night and it went away if I used an extra pillow to prop myself up. Any ideas?

A: u should go to the hospital. it sounds like it could be a gall bladder attack.

Good luck,
Jenn

Q: Is Mefenamic Acid releif right upper abdominal pain?
My father has “Matastatic Adenocarcinoma”. He is taking Mefenamic Acid to releif his right upper abdominal pain in oral or sometimes as suppository mode. He has also Gastric Ulcer. Is it good for him to take Mefenamic Acid? Or which one is better than this?

A: Even for someone with cancer it is a pretty disastrous drug to use for pain in a patient with an ulcer. It is contraindicated in active ulcer disease as it may cause pain and bleeding itself.

Q: I have shooting pin pain in my upper right abdominal area, is this a symptom of pancreatic cancer or disease?
I’ve had it for a long time and I am just wondering because I know that upper abdominal pain is a symptom for pancreatic cancer. My pain is SHOOTING PIN PAIN
I was wondering if this is a symptom for pancreatic cancer
Please Help

A: . I suggest to you that you go to the doctors, if anything so that you can get piece of mind. My mom died of pancreatic cancer just last Wednesday and I think that if you ever have pain in the (bread box area) upper stomach, you should have it checked. Good luck and think positive, be brave and get it checked.

Q: what would cause upper abdominal pain 17 weeks pregnant?
I have upper abdominal pain for 2hours now its sore when I move and uncomfortable. Has anyone else had this what could it be?
the pain is at the top of my stomach in the middle of my breasts but under them.

A: Is it close to your ribs and on the left side? That’s where it was for me and I thought something was wrong. Apparently it was just gas, it moves to a different spot when you are pregnant.

Yeah, I think that’s gas (or heartburn). Try taking some tums and see if that helps. If not, give a call to a doctor on call to see what they say.

Q: When you where pregnant did you have upper abdominal pain, that felt like stretching pains?
I’m just wondering on weather or not I need to call the doctor, because I have felt a stretching pain in my upper abdomen. I’m only 17 weeks so, I don’t know if that’s normal. Also it has made me feel sick to my stomach all day, and today is the first day I’ve experienced this so, idk what to do.

A: Your body is just getting ready for the baby.

Q: What could be upper abdominal pain in 3rd trimester?
Hello all! I am 30 weeks preggers, and my journey has been a trouble free event so far! Except beginning yesterday, I’ve had this upper abdominal pain (between the sternum and naval), even tender to touch, and when baby boy kicks this area, it takes my breath away! I’ve call my doctor’s office to speak with a nurse, and await to hear back from them, and I’ve an appointment in 2 days. Any idea what’s going on? It’s uncomfortable for sure! No other issues…no swelling, no headaches, no discharge…any out there who’ve experienced this?

Thanks for sharing, folks!

A: Hi!!! My cousin had issues with her gall bladder late in her pregnancy. It started off as a tender spot with pain but then she started having more symptoms. She ended up having it removed within a few weeks of giving birth. I guess the baby was kicking it and making the problem worse. Not sure if this is what you have or not. I know some women just have more pains late in pregnancy. Hope you get to feeling better!!! Best wishes!!!!

Q: What should I do, I’m 32 weeks pregnant with really bad upper abdominal pain?
HI, I’m 32 weeks pregnant with my first baby…ever since late last night I have had constant upper abdominal pain, bad lower back pain, nauseated, and diarrhea. The pain in my abdominal is constantly here but at times it gets very bad and then goes and comes. I’m only 18 and I’m not to sure what to expect or what any of this means. Please HELP. Thanks Stephanie

A: Im 33 weeks and I am experiencing all these symptoms as well. I am in early labor is what my doctor says but I’m not supposed to go to the hospital in till it’s really bad so I would call the doc or the maternity ward at the hospital and ask them what to do. If you go in too early they will try to stop the labor. If that’s what you want than go for it but you’ll be in the hospital for a few days. This is what happened to me then they sent me home and I was disappointed, now im just playing the waiting game in till the pain gets worse to where it wakes me up is when im going in. good luck and hope everything is alright

Q: Upper abdominal pain after eating or drinking?
Whenever I eat or drink something (even water) i get a strong pain in the upper abdominal, i am feeling like there’s something inside me, i don’t know…
sometimes i feel like burping but i don’t
Any idea of what i have?

A: When I was getting an ulcer that’s EXACTLY what it felt like. Everything I ate or drank caused sharp pains like you’re describing.
Are you under an undue amount of stress, Honey? Go see a doctor about your tummy and take a good look at what could be causing your tension.
(Mine was an engagement I needed to end.)
Best to you, Sweetie!! :)

Q: What is causing SEVERE abdominal distention & off and on upper abdominal pain?
For the past 2 weeks I have been dealing with severe abdominal distention( my normal 27 inch waist is 36 inches!!), off and on upper abdominal pain, bowel movements that go from loose to constipation like back to loose and just plain feeling unlike myself. I’ve had 8 major abdominal surgeries over the past 15 years and have had 2 bowel obstruction in the past year. I had a CT scan two weeks ago which showed no obstruction but some “tethering” around my colon. Yet I’m still experincing these symptoms two weeks later… My PC is going have me see a GI and thinks I should have a Colonoscopy. I’m wondering if this all could be caused by Adhesion’s? Are adhesions visable on CT scans? Does anyone else have any ideas???

A: You might want to try going to health forums and talking with people who are having similar problems. One good place I go to is -
http://ibdcrohns.about.com/mpboards.htm
The heading is inflammatory bowel disease but it also has subsetions on different digestive disorders. I have IBS myself.
It is important that you talk to your doctor about this.
It is also important to educate yourself.
I find it helpful talking with people who have actually experienced the same things I have.
After years of chronic illness I no longer follow my doctor blindly.
how ever it is important to remember not to relay solely on the internet for diagnosis. No matter what you read or hear, always discuss it with your doctor. If you’re doctor is one of those that is not willing to discuss things, get another.
good luck

Q: upper abdominal pain & urinary problems after unprotected sex, why?
A little more than a week ago, i had sex a couple times with a friend of mine. Now I am having upper abdominal pain and some problems peeing ( at first there was a slight burning sensation, now its just very concentrated.) any thoughts why

A: I think i had that problem once.. it went away in a few days.. but i would go get it checked out you may have a urinary track infection.. or if you nocie your back huritng.. it could be a kidney infection.. chances are its an infection of some kind.

Q: what are some reasons for upper abdominal pain?
i have some abdominal pain just under my lower ribs and slightly towards the right. can anyone tell me what could be causing this?

A: Sounds like it could be biliary colic due to gallbladder disease. This is usually to the right under your rib cage, although it could just be something like wind which can present pain in most places. Check with your GP. Dont just go with answers on here.

Q: What should I do about my chest pain,.upper abdominal pain(left and right sides)and general feelling sick?
I’ve had my gallbladder removed 8 mo’s ago,but that didn”t alleviate my pain. On a scale of 1-10, I say its a 10!!!! The chest pain is getting worse and it feels like I am having mini-heart attacks. On several trips to the ER they have found nothing wrong and I still feel like I am literally dying, I have no energy and I feel completely ran down. During the “attacks” I feel hot and sweaty, my heart is pounding,my head is pounding, pain shoots up through my chest into my shoulders, and neck and my right arm feels really heavey and strange feeling, plus I feel nauseous. I have blacked out before because the pain was just so intense and it felt like I couldn’t breathe. I have had chest x-rays,EKG’s,and a chest CT scan
and nothing has been found. I don’t know what else to do. My family life, career, and social is falling apart because I can’t do anything because I feel so horrible!!!!! Someone Please Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A: I’M SO SORRY THAT YOU ARE FEELING SO POORLY. TO BEGIN WITH I WOULD GO TO SEE A CARDIOLOGIST AND UPDATE THEM ON ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU HAVE MENTIONED. I AM SURE THAT THEY WILL NEED TO DO A FULL WORK -UP ON YOU AND THEN IF THEY FIND NOTHING CAN OFFER YOU SOME ADVISE ON WHAT ELSE NEEDS TO BE DONE

Q: Are sensitive teeth and sore gums and abdominal pain a pregnancy symptom?
I went to the dentist a few months ago and had some fillings done. Everything was fine until recently my gums are swollen and slightly sore and my teeth are sensitive to pressure, hot and cold. and now im having abdominal pain I’ve had a child before but dont remember this.

I am trying to conceive so pregnancy is entirely possible.

A: I have no idea about the gums, but with my three pregnancies I would get cramps kinda like period cramps but sometimes a little higher, whenever I didn’t drink enough water, remember 8 glasses a day. This would happen especially during the first trimester.

Q: Is it normal to have abdominal pain during pregnancy?
I am into my 7th week now and I sometimes get abdominal pain which dissappears shortly. I sometimes think its more due to gas in my system. Is this normal?

A: You should tell your doctor about any kind of pain you have, but it is common to have round ligament pain.

Round ligament pain generally refers to a brief, sharp, stabbing pain or a longer-lasting dull ache that pregnant women commonly feel in the lower abdomen or groin, starting in the second trimester. You may feel round ligament pain as a short jabbing sensation if you suddenly change position, such as when you’re getting out of bed or out of a chair or when you cough, roll over in bed, or get out of the bathtub. You may feel it as a dull ache after a particularly active day — when you’ve been walking a lot or doing some other physical activity.

The round ligaments surround your uterus in your pelvis. As your uterus grows during pregnancy, the ligaments stretch and thicken to accommodate and support it. These changes can occasionally cause pain on one or both sides of your abdomen

The sharp, jabbing type of round ligament pain shouldn’t last longer than the few seconds in which you’re changing position or getting up. Don’t hesitate to call your caregiver any time abdominal aches or pains continue after a short rest or are accompanied by:

Severe pain or cramping, or more than four contractions in an hour (even if they don’t hurt)
Low back pain, especially if you didn’t previously have back pain, or an increase in pressure in the pelvic area.
Bleeding, spotting, or a change in the type or amount of vaginal discharge
Fever, chills, faintness, or nausea and vomiting
Pain or burning when you urinate

Q: Can you get abdominal pain during early pregnancy?
Is it common to have mild abdominal pain and cramping during pregnancy with no bleeding? If so what does it feel like?

A: Yes, that is very common. It feels just like you described. It comes and goes as your uterus stretches. In the second trimester it begins to feel more like muscles stretching than dull period like cramps, but because it is your uterus, it does feel similar to period cramps. As long as you aren’t bleeding, and the pain isn’t severe, it’s normal.

Q: Is it normal to have abdominal pain in early pregnancy?
This is my 3rd pregnancy. My 1st pregnancy was successful and my 2nd resulted in a miscarriage at 5 weeks7. I had abdominal pain and bleeding with the miscarriage. I’m roughly 7 weeks pregnant now and suddenly today my lower abdomen where the baby is started hurting. Its really tender and I didn’t really experience this with either of my previous pregnancies so I’m not sure if I should be concerned.

A: cramping is very normal through out your pregnancy. You uterus is making room for your growing fetus! If you start to bleed then you need to head to the er to get things check out. But cramping is totally normal.

Q: Is this kind of abdominal pain normal during pregnancy?
I’m between 14 and 15 weeks pregnant. The last 3 days, I’ve been having consistent abdominal pain. The pain is low in my abdomen…it’s similar to constipation…but I’ve had regular BMs throughout the entire pregnancy. It’s not severe…just kinda uncomfortable…it makes sleeping through the night difficult. I know transient pain is normal (round ligament pain) but this is constant…lasts hours…and it doesn’t get better/worse when I change positions. Is this normal…could comething be wrong?

A: soounds totally normal to me..i remember having the same thing..

Q: back and abdominal pain after pregnancy normal?
I just had my second son 8 weeks ago and have had back pain ever since. The last few weeks though it has been getting severe and occasionaly have a bad abdominal pain to where i almost have to sit down. Any suggestions? I am going to call the dr on Monday but just wanting suggestions is it normal?

A: I think that your body went through a lot, and is trying to balance out after words. Just relax and it should be okay soon!

Q: Can abdominal pain during early pregnancy be caused by irritable bowel syndrome?
I just found out that I am pregnant, but I am getting cramps. I am worried that it may be an ectopic pregnancy. I miscarried 4 years ago due to IBS so I am wondering if the pain is irritable bowel syndrome again.

A: Hi. I have IBS and Acid Reflux. During the first few weeks of my pregnancy, I had very irregular bowels and a lot of cramping. I too thought something was wrong with my pregnancy. Everything turned out to be just fine. I also had a miscarriage 5 years ago, so I understand your fear. Do not worry so much about it as you may worsen everything. Visit your doctor and have them give you an ultrasound to make sure your pregnancy is in the right place. With ectopic pregnancies by the way, I don’t know how far along you are, but you would get major cramping and you would definitely know that it is not your bowels.
Wish you the best of luck, stay positive and stop worrying. See your doctor ASAP!

Q: abdominal pain = pregnancy?
Is abdominal pain a sign of pregnancy?
1. I am 20 days delayed
2. I am irregular and have experience being delayed for 2 months
3. Sexually active but my bf never successfully came out inside me. Just frequent touches on my thing with his thing.

A: Why haven’t you tested?

Q: Lower abdominal pain cause from pregnancy?
I have been having lower ab and back pain and my period is late which happen every month, its just alot long this time. Could this be a sign of pregnancy?

A: take a test and see a doctor

Q: Is there abdominal pain in the first couple weeks of pregnancy?
My girlfriend and I are scared that she may be pregnant. She’s been having abdominal pain that lingers but when she moves it’s a sharp pain. Also she’s been quite moody lately. Is abdominal pain a normal symptom of early pregnancy? We took a “special day” and spent hours having sex on and off frequently, so could the pain just be a result of having too much sex in a short amount of time?

A: nope there shouldn’t be any ab pain in the beginning of pregnancy. Although if she is pregnant she could be having an ectopic pregnancy, where the egg implants in the ovarian tubes instead of the uterus. i would have her make a doctors appointment.

I never had any ab pain in my pregnancy till about 26 weeks.

Q: Is my abdominal pain pregnancy related?
Two years ago in Feb, I had gastric bypass surgery. I have not had any complications. Now I am 6 months pregnant and I am having pain in my upper abdomen whenever I eat. This pain is occuring where my scars are. Could it be scar tissue? The baby pushing up on my diapraghm or complications from the bypass surgery? Like a leak?

A: It more than likely is the baby pushing your diaphragm upwards causing strain on the scar tissue from your surgery. At this point in your pregnancy, it’s best to eat smaller more frequent meals than to eat until you’re full…Be sure and mention the pain to your doc. I’m sure there isn’t any complication from the surgery but he’ll be able to tell you for sure.

Q: Upper abdominal pain during pregnancy?
I’m 32 weeks pregnant and I’m experiencing some upper abdominal pain its above my belly button and below my breasts It feels like cramps… I see the doc on Wed so I will bring it up then but anyone else experience this?

A: I do sort of I’m not sure if it’s the same pain, it’s like right under my breasts and hurts more when I stretch or stand up straight. I don’t know if it’s my ribs or not. I don’t get them often, usually I get pain in the lower part of my stomach, or my sides and my back, very rarely does it hit my upper stomach. I’m sure you’re doctor will let you know, but it could be stretching, the baby has barely any room now maybe he’s hitting a nerve or rubbing against your ribs or maybe it’s braxton hicks. Contractions also cause cramps, so if it’s constant and getting worse you could be in preterm labor, but since it’s so high I doubt it. Good luck.

Q: Help Severe lower Abdominal pain during pregnancy?
Im 28 weeks pregnant and all last evening through this morning i have been experiencing sever lower abdominal pain. it would continue hurting until i found a comfortable position then if i moved even slightly it would start to hurt again. the pains were very sharp, it felt like a knife cutting up my insides it was almost unbearable. i couldnt move or it would hurt way more. it felt like my baby was all bunched up down there. there was some pressure in my bottom.
i was wondering if anyone knew what this was.

A: I had almost this exact thing two days ago when I went to the hospital. I was told it was a pulled muscle from my back to my hip. The reasoning is because around this time your uterus grows over the pelvis causing some pressure.

You may want to ask your doctor about Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD.) It’s a common known problem many women get after they become pregnant (I got it before I was pregnant) and it makes the muscles tense at the wrong times causing that knife or sometimes burning sensation.

I’m pretty sure that’s all it is. I’d check with your doctor just to be safe.

Q: Is abdominal pain normal during pregnancy?
I’m currentyl 14 weeks, almost 15 weeks pregnant. When I wake up in the morning, sometimes I get this stabbing pain on my left side. I read on the internet that it was ligaments stretching? I don’t go to the doctor until next Thursday so I can’t ask?

A: yea what you read on the internet is right your belly is trying to make space for your baby. normally what i do is apply a warm cloth in the area or i change my position.

Q: Left side abdominal pain in the 3rd trimester? Why?
I am 36 weeks along with baby #4. Since Friday I have had some contractions but nothing great. As of Friday also I have had severe abdominal pain on the left side of my uterus. Any ideas of what can cause this? Thanks in advance

Also.. it is not constipation as I have had NUMEROUS loose bowel movements in the last couple days. Thanks
It is more towards the top of my uterus. It is tender vs. sharp and stabbing like my ligament pains are.

A: strained ligaments from something as simple as coughing.
I always had it on the right side. It probably is nothing.
No other problems? Tell the doc at yur next checkup.

Q: I am pregnant and experiencing abdominal and lower back pain on the left side. I am also discharging water. ?
lower back pain (left side) 3
abdominal pain 3
leaking clear discharge/ possibly water

A: YAY! Go to the hospital and have your baby! Your water’s breaking :D

Q: 24 weeks pregnant – lower left side abdominal pain?
Good Morning Everyone! Over the weekend, I did some cleaning and walked a lot. Last night, I woke up to a stabbing pain in my lower left side of my abdomen. I have had the abdominal ligament pain before, but nothing like this. If I got up, it would stop me in my tracks. If I would turn over it would hurt, but also if I tried sleeping sitting up, I would get a 30 sec. sharp pain on my left side. I am leaning more towards severe abdominal ligment pain, but not sure if it could be painful braxton hicks or some kind of infection. Has anyone experienced something like this come to find out you had an infection or something else. I had the pain the entire night ranging from very painful to dull. This morning the pain is dull but still present on my left side. I called my docs. office, but they probably won’t return my call til NEXT YEAR. Any advice? p.s. no extra discharge and baby was moving this morning.

A: I experienced the same pains and my doctor ended up diagnosing them as round ligament pains. I had to pull over one time, they were so painful, and it came on out of nowhere. I’m not thinking it would be Braxton Hicks because those are painless or very mild, and you would feel the contraction, not just the severe pain. I would call your doctor, but I have a feeling it’s more severe round ligament pains.

Good luck!

Q: I am having lower left side abdominal pain after conception,Is this ECTOPIC pregnancy?

A: Well, only an ultrasound can tell for sure. You would still be early on for pain though.

Go to your doctor.

Q: upper left side abdominal pain?
my girlfriend has a very bad pain in her upper left side abdominal region, she said it feels like a knife is stuck in her, we think it may be her kidney or maybe just a muscle spasm. does anyone know what this is? should we go to the hospital?

A: she should go to the hospital if and or:she has a fever, is sweating, the pain stays the same or increases, her urine looks dark, or is less in quantity than usuall, vomiting and or diarrhea. if any of these occur, she may be having a kidney stone, kidney infection, pancreatitis or even gall stones (i know the gb is on the right, but,,,).none of these conditions can be ignored.goodluck;)michele

Q: Left Side Abdominal Pain – what is it?
I have been experiencing sharp pain in my lower left abdomin — about 3 inches from my belly button — for about 3 days now. I do not have any other symptoms except for this sharp pain. It does not get worse with coughing or movement, but is extremely tender to the touch. I’ve neer been constipated before, so I don’t really know what that is like, but I have passed fairly normal stool — maybe a little less than normal, but pretty okay. Any ideas on what this could be?

A: go to the clinic and stop guessing…

Q: lower left side abdominal pain?
ok so im 20 years old and i have been having this awful lower left side abdominal pain around my hip area and my periods have been irregular. what could it be this is not the first time iv had this pain but last time it went away after i took some advil

A: hm you should go to the doctor instead of just taking advil for the pain, it may be something serious and you don’t know about it…so just go and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Q: Lower left side abdominal pain every 2 minutes, for 24 hours, increases with in-breath?
Ive been having this sharp pain in my lower left side of my abdominal. It started last night when I went to bed, and has not stopped yet, and is now…nearly 24 hours later…We did have some dinner guests last night, and had some Manicotti shells, pears and chocolate…maybe ate a little more than I should have, but not too bad…I did have a bowl of potato chips…which i dont have more than once a year, if that…I have a history of IBS symptoms, and this isn’t the first time I have had this…and take Noritriptyline (sp?) but didn’t seem to help. Seems to be a little worse when breathe in. The repitition of the pain (stabbing, dull) makes my breathing a bit faster, probably because im more focused on the pain, and the next stabbing sensation. No BM problems, so its a bit weird. Also, I had a low grade fever for past two days prior to that…just hot and sweating, but dont have any fever today…

A: There are a number of conditions which can cause the left iliac fossa pain you describe. It could just be an exacerbation of your IBS, but the low grade fever would seem to point to something inflammatory and/or infective such as colitis or diverticulitis. Even if it is your IBS playing up, the history of prolonged colicky pain really requires a medical examination to exclude other potential problems. See your doctor.

Q: left side abdominal pain?
I am having pain in my lower left side, kind of over my hip area, I had a ruptured cyst about 4 years ago on that side and the pain is in the same area so I’m assuming its got to do with my ovaries, I’m on cycle day 25 of a normal 28 day cycle so it shouldn’t really be a cyst because I’m way past ovulation? anyone else had this? it hurts pretty badly and ibuprophen isn’t doing much.

A: You need to see a doctor right away if Ibuprofen isn’t working for your pain. You may have another ovarian cyst (they do reoccur and they do dot go down after ovulation) or you may have an infection, there may also be other reasons for your pain. Either way you need to be assessed by a doctor now. See your doctor today or go to your nearest ER if the pain gets worse.

Q: Lower left side abdominal pain??
To start out I do have a doctors appointment scheduled for January (waited until I got health insurance before going in).

In December of 2005 I suddenly got pain in the lower left side of my abdomin. I feel the pain all of the time–does not matter what I am doing. At times the pain is MUCH worse. If I have been sitting for an extended amount of time and stand up fast the pain is extreemly sharp and will cause me to double back over–takes me a while until I am actually able to stand up straight. I have had times where the pain has been so bad that it wakes me up during the night.
Recently I got that time of month again (was on the shot and didn’t have it for over 8 years) and had lots of clotting. The pain in my left side was still there (a little worse, but not much), BUT I also got the same pain in my right side–went away when that time ended.

Any ideas??? Has anyone ever experienced this??
Please also note that I do not drink coffee or soda. I drink water all of the time and actually also take multi vitamins and cranberry concentrate. My friends think I am nuts because of the amount of water I drink. :)

A: The only thing I’ve experienced that comes close to this was during pregnancy, when the ligament that is attached to the uterus was being stretched by the pregnancy and would hurt when I stood up or rolled over in bed. Since you are not pregnant (right??), I don’t think that is your problem. What comes to mind when I read your symptoms is either cysts on your ovary, OR there could be something going on with your intestine on the left side. I would recommend that you first go to your gynecologist and have a full pelvic exam. If that does not turn up anything, then go to your family practicioner and explain the symptoms and request a full physical and some tests on your digestive tract. They may want to do a colonoscopy to check things out.

Q: Left side abdominal pain, and pressure while peeing?
For the past week or so I’ve been experiencing a dull pain in my lower left side. Since I was a kid I’ve had several UTI’s but I’ve never had pain with them. When I pee it’s not so much of a pain, it feels more like someone is stepping on my side.

I don’t know if any this has anything to do with it but I recently switched to a vegetarian diet and all I’ve been drinking lately is water and Monster. I’m 19 and sexually active.

The only reason this has me a little worried is because like I said I’ve never had pain with my UTI’s in the past, I’d usually just take some antibiotics and it would go away within the next day or two. Just wondering if anyone would have any idea if this was normal, or what I could do until I can schedule a doctors appointment because I don’t have insurance right now. FML. :/

Also, at the beginning of the year I was experiencing… gee I don’t even know how to explain it. They tested me for Hypoglycemia. Apparently I was boarder line Hypoglycemic. For a couple months I wasn’t having any problems but while all of this has been going on I’ve been getting the side effects from it again.

Help meeeee.

A: it might be a problem with your kidneys. make sure you drink lots and lots of water, so if it is an infection you can flush it out. it might still be a uti, so you could try drinking cranberry juice as well, which should help get rid of the bacteria that causes utis.

Q: Lower right/left side abdominal pain?!—-Help Please!! :( ?
Okay so I am 12 years old and about 4-5 months back I had very severe pain in my abdomen. In the early stages, it started from the belly. Then it went to the right side and to the left side. It was like a sharp stabbing pain. The doctor couldnt understand what the problem was and therefore he gave me BuscoPan to reduce the pain. I have visited about 10-12 doctors and none of them can distinguish the pain.

Some say it is appendicits, ovarian cyst, a cyst in the kidney, bladder cyst, urinal infection, gaseous loops etc.
The pain had vanished for about 2 months. It has come back now. I could feel it yesterday, it was there for 2-4 mins and then went again. My urine color is normal. I have my periods normal. And also when i have the pain, I get my urine too quick.

What could this be?! Please help me. Thankyou so much. Best answer = 20 points. :)
I dont know if this is something related to it but I usually find urine on my underwear. Like if im sitting, I wouldn’t feel it, but when I go to the washroom my u/w is full of urine. :s

A: I have had very similar problems in the passed. I had pain coming from the left and right side of my lower stomach area. I thought it was my liver or kidneys, or something like that. It ends up that your intestinal tract runs all around your body, and the reason the pain is “off and on” is probably largely due to what you are eating. If you are not very active that could lead to this problem. Soda, junk food, fast food, and a lack of roughage in your diet can lead to common problems with the symptoms you describe. Try to stretch the area out, suck your belly in and out as many times as you can, and try to exercise and eat better. I know you are probably not thrilled with having to do this, but it will seriously help you.

Q: Experiencing left side abdominal pain.?
so, a little over a week ago i started feeling some discomfort in the left side of my abdomen. it eventually became a slightly sharp pain, and when it was at its prime, the pain was about a 5/10. if i was to take a deep breath in, i could really feel it. i went to a walk in clinic and they basically concluded i pulled a muscle in my stomach, so he told me to just lay off what i’ve been doing, rest, and drink lots of fluids. so far, it has gotten a lot better, but i can still feel a little something there, though it’s barely anything. ( now, it has only been 4 days ). my question is, does anyone else agree i just pulled a muscle, or is it possible there’s more to it? i’m experiencing no fever and i haven’t felt nauseous at all. everything has felt normal other than this. there hasn’t been any other symptoms. thanks in advance!

A: I was diagnosed with costochondritis at first, but then they figured out that it is chronic myofascial pain (which is very similar to fibromyalgia). You probably have some trigger points (a trigger point is a knot in the muscle). The trigger points are most likely in your sternalis, pectoralis, or intercostal muscles – but can spread (ie. serratus anterior). What ever muscles are effected in the front will also be effected in the back aswell and vice versa. Therefore you probably have a corresponding trigger point in your back muscles. Trigger points also develop corresponding trigger points on the opposite side to the one affected. So if your right side is sore, check your left side. So if you don’t act on them you can have a whole cascade of them all over your body before you know it. The only way to relieve a trigger point is to put pressure on it (Use a broad tip marker on the pointy end – I like those fat sharpie’s and consider buying a THERACANE – it is a great tool for the back especially!). The external intercostal muscles are responsible for expanding your ribcage when you take a deep breath. It will hurt when you press on the trigger point at first and lots of times they refer pain (you will press on the trigger point and feel the pain else where). The pain will be felt at first but then it should gradually get less and less as you hold pressure on it . You have to work out the trigger points (consider seeing a massage therapist who does myofascial release – I tried electro-acupuncture but it was NO-WHERE NEAR AS EFFECTIVE as massage therapy) also make sure you stretch your back, neck and ribcage (do a pec stretch). To do a pec stretch (which stretches your pectoral muscles, sternalis, and intercostals) stand in a doorway with your arms against the door frame in an “L” position (and keep your bicep at shoulder height and lean forward and try keeping your arms at different heights to stretch different parts of your chest). You should feel a stretch in your chest. To stretch the neck (re: sternocledomastoid and scalenes) sit in a chair with the feet flat on the floor and arms by your side relaxed. Tilt your head to one side and hold when you feel a stretch. then do the other way. Also for the scalene muscles (which are accessory breathing muscles) in the neck tilt the head to one side while seated in the chair and then at the same time turn your head upwards to the ceiling and hold. Also make sure you sit with feet flat on the ground, keep them straight, and your back straight and not slouched as this can lead to developing trigger points in your back & neck in the scalenes (re: neck) and in the rhomboids and trapezius in your back & other places. Also be aware of your posture and the position of your head and feet while standing and sitting. Make sure you are sitting & standing erect and your feet are not outwards (sign of tight glutes) or inwards. Your feet should be straight and your head back & straight. Your head should be straight and shoulders back and relaxed (down). You should try to deep breath (Make sure it is from your diaphragm) even if you can only get a little air in and hold it as this will allow your diaphragm muscle to stretch. It might also be tight. Sometimes you will hear your bones crack and pop if your diaphragm is really tight when you stretch it – this is normal and will not hurt you. Your diaphragm is your primary breathing muscle. Rehab I found is a LONG PROCESS for this and RX muscle relaxants do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! you should consider buying the the book by Claire Davies called “The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook”. Trigger points can also create sattelite trigger points (i.e. in your abdominal muscles – rectus abdominus). These can give you bladder problems – you feel like you got to go but you actually don’t, or your have trouble going to the bathroom. Use heat on the affected area to increase the blood flow – you only want to use ice immediately after an injury for swelling. At this stage you want heat (and I find heat much more soothing and helpful myself). I got my diagnosis from a Thoracic Surgeon, but you can also see a Rheumatologist.

I also want to note that I went for a pulmonary function test and my family doc told me I had asthma. HOWEVER, he did not know my specialist got a copy of the test results and he said my test was “normal” – so I don’t have asthma! Apparently ALOT of family practice MDs have never heard of Chronic Myofascial pain and do not know about trigger points (mine didn’t).

It took a year for me to be able to yawn through my nose (in though the nose and out through the mouth) – I still cannot yawn with my mouth cause of my trigger points and diaphragm tightness.

Do not self-massage your abdomen though, I did that and within 20 min I had blood on my underwear b/c I irritated my ovary. Leave that to your massage therapist – MAKE SURE YOU SEE ONE and stretch all your muscles.

Q: What is this back/abdominal pain from?
The last several weeks I’ve had upper and mid-back pain and upper abdominal pain when I’ve skipped a meal. I’m fine waking up in the morning, but within an hour I’m really uncomfortable if I don’t eat breakfast. If I do, I’m fine until lunch, but if I eat, the pain goes away. If I don’t eat it gets really bad. Tylenol doesn’t do anything for the pain, but ibuprofen and asprin seem to get rid of it.

My doctor did a back x-ray and she says there isn’t anything wrong with my back – she doesn’t know what’s wrong, and just prescribed me a heavier dose of ibuprofen.

What is this?
The week before this started, I had a horrible migraine that lasted days. I’m normal weight, and not on any medications. I rarely go to the doctor… you can see why!

A: Sounds like an Ulcer actually. The clue is skipping meals and once you eat you are o.k. again. It’s not your back. Thats typical signs of an ulcer. Aspirin actually will make it worse. Tho it lessens the pain, it can cause stomach bleeding within a few months. Stop the OTC drugs and get your digestive system checked out.

Q: Lower back and abdominal pain at 6 wk pregnant?
I recently found out i’m pregnant and i started feeling lower back pain like on the hips and some abdominal pain (discomfort) but really mild, I can’t stand being sitting down a lotno ree being up all day i feel morecomfortablee when i’m laying down and thediscomfortt goes away all night when i’m asleep. Is this normal?

A: it sounds like you are having growing pains. that’s where the baby is making more room. your uterus is getting ready to carry your baby so its stretching. try lying down on your left side with a pillow between your legs. hope it helps CONGRADULATIONS ON YOUR NEW BABY.

Q: 4 months pregnant with abdominal and back pain is this normal?
I haven’t been to the doctor yet, but i will in a week. The abdominal pain is not severe, just like period cramping and my back hurts whenever I stand or walk for too long and I can’t sleep at night. I feel like a zombie because i’m never comfortable and I used to be able to sleep anywhere but not anymore. Is this normal? My abdomin also hurts when i’m angry or crying…

A: Yes! Absolutely normal. While pregnancy affects some women more adversely than others, regardless, it takes a toll… it’s a very uncomfy state to be in for 9 months. You can expect fatigue, mood swings due to hormones, and back pain due to all the extra weight you are having to carry around. Lots of women have to pee very often, too, because of the pressure the baby is putting on your bladder (esp. later in preg). Also, you can be prone to sickness to the stomach ANY time of day… not just morning sickness. Also, certain smells might suddenly become intolerable to you, and your ankles might swell.

Q: I have abdominal/back pain that alternates from side to side?
i have been havinn abdominal/back pain that has been taking turns with my sides. Yesterday was my right side. Today my right side feels fine, but my left side hurts. Wtf?

A: To provide a good answer there are a lot of questions that need to be answered. Things such as age, weight, height, sex, activities, occupation, sports and even more. Then you also need either XRays or possible even a CTscan to rule out back problems.
Nerve problems such as pinched nerves do not jump from side to side. The nerves run down through the spinal column and they exit at the vertebrae on both the right and left side. Pain is usually caused by bulging disc pressing on them, inflammation in and around the vertebrae, and calcium formation around the nerve opening. Just from the human anatomy it is almost impossible to switch sides in a day.

If this continues to hurt you should go see the doctor and find out what it is, it could be as simple as a mild injury from playing sports, and depending on your age it could even be a growth spurt (growing pains).pp

Q: 33 Weeks Pregnant With Bad Abdominal Pain & Back Pressure?
I have been having bad abdominal pain it feels like aching muscles all in the front of my stomach and a lot of back pressure in the middle of my back. The back pressure has been there for a few nights now where the abdominal pain has just started. It’s drifting in and out of being strong and going away. Not sure what it is this is my first pregnancy but it’s really uncomfortable. Anyone experienced this and know anything about it? Any ideas?

A: 33 weeks Too! I’m guessing the baby might be dropping. When the pains come you should write down the time and also when they stop. They could be contractions. If you’re having Braxton-Hicks, they say you shouldn’t have more than 5 in an hour. If more than 5, call the doc. Be ready cause they will want to know the timing. If the pains are not defined, try making it through the night, and call the doc in the morning. If it’s too intense go on in to your hospital. I hope everything works out ok.

Q: my sister in law is 6 months pregnant and is having lower back pains and abdominal pain?
My sister in law is 6 months pregnant and having lower back pains and abdominal pains. She said that is has been going all day and I hoping someone could tell me what it might be or what she needs to do

A: tell her to see her doc and take no chances with her baby Good luck……)

Q: Is it common to have abdominal pain when you have a low back disc rupture?
Can low back disc pains cause abdominal pain? Or would it be 2 different things going on?

A: Very possible. But abdominal pain can also radiate to the back (as is the case with a number of abdominal disease processes, I would recommend consulting your GP (or Orthopedic specialts if you are already under his care for the disk problem)

It is common for Sacral-Lumbar muscle pain to slowly involve the abdominal complex of muscles if allowed to weaken with the back. If you have a prolapsed disk, similar pain can ensue. And of course you may not be using core muscles as much due to the pain you have. They slacken and cause more muscular pain.

Once you have ruled out abdominal pathology for your pain, discuss with your physician exercises that can increase your core strength. This might be the best way to bring everything back into line and attenuate you discomfort.

Good luck,
Jenn

Q: any answers for lower abdominal pain along with lower back pain?
for a couple of days now i have experienced lower abdominal pain. It feels like a steady cramp(and not time of month). This cramp is constant. I also have lower back pain, not extreme but i can feel discomfort. Its feels like the two pains somehow tie in together. When i stand up not fast just normal i tend to get light headed where my vision becomes blured then comes back after a few seconds. I wonder if this all ties together or if anyone has any answers.

A: you may want to call the dr.
it could be a ovarian cyst.
the pain is dull/sometimes sharp, travels around to your back and sometimes down your leg.

when you go from sitting to standing you can cause a drop in your blood pressure. i think everyone experiences this at some time in their life. everything will go black and you have this “massive throbbing in your head” and it all lasts for about 10 seconds…

i wouldnt think that the 2 are somehow tied together

Q: Frequent peeing and lower back/abdominal pain?
For two days now I’ve been having major lower back pain. Mainly when going from sitting to standing and vice versa. I’ve been peeing way more than normal and from time to time I’ll have cramp like pains. I’m going to the doc Monday but just wondering what it could be. Thanks!

A: Sound like Renal Colic.

Q: I have lower back pain and lower abdominal discomfort, what do i have?
Is lower back pain and abdominal discomfort the result of conception?

A: i would say cramping…but its pretty obvious you want us to tell you you’re pregnant b/c you posted this in the pregnancy section…how close are you to your period?? but yea…its prolly just cramping…and if you stress about it too much it will get worse and you will convince yourself its conception when its prolly not

Q: Extreme back/abdominal pain with braton hicks in between?
I am currently 33 1/2 weeks pregnant and I just did the dishes about an hour ago. My stomach was pressing against the counter (not hard, very lightly and I was not uncomfortable.) Now that I have finished the dishes I have extreme back pain/and pain in the lower front. I also have had about 4 braxton hicks contractions but the pain disappears when I have the contractions. Any one know what this could be?! I’m worried…

A: they probelly are braxtion hicks but just in case time them if they become very strong and close togetehr (1 min or so apart) go to hospitial asap and if you are really worried ( its normal to have bh) just go to your doc to check he will but u on a fetel stress monitor for a hour or so and it will bring you much comfort trust me lol good luck

Q: Is lower abdominal pain and back pain starting two weeks before period due to ovulation?
Or is something wrong? This has just started happening the last four months. My doctor said it’s ovulation pain, but then why haven’t I had it for the last ten years?

A: Most likely it is mittleschmerz (“middle pain”) due to ovulation. I didn’t get it until my 30’s; lots of things can factor in, such as if you’ve had any ovarian cysts, or minor surgery. To be safe you can ask for an ultrasound to check. However, if it goes away after ovulation and then comes back the next month at the same time, your doc may decide it’s not necessary.
