Q: I have lower pain in my back and passing small amounts of blood?
i have had lower back pain since a few days ago and started noticing a small amount of blood on my underwear i don’t know what it could be so can someone tell me a it might be cuz i have no idea.

A: Sounds like menstruation. When I get my period, I get lower back pain when the flow is heavy. You may get the pain with a lighter flow.

Is this bleeding in some way different than your normal period? It would be worth calling a gynecologist.

Q: How to avoid lower back pain when running?
I’ve been running cross-country for four years now, but this is the first year I’ve exerpeince lower back pain. What can I do to avoid this? One of my teammates said it could be posture, but now says my posture shouldn’t be triggering lower back pain. What could be causing this, and what can I do to avoid this?

A: Try putting some padded insoles (Dr. Scholl’s or something similar) in your shoes. A lot of back pain can be traced back to your feet and how they are landing. You probably will benefit running in shoes that are specifically designated as “cushioned.” Go to www.roadrunnersport.com for information on which shoes are well cushioned.

Q: How early can lower back pain and pain in the uterus begin after conception?
My partner and I have tried to concieve, and in the last couple days she has had some minor lower back pain and pain in the area of her Uterus. She is not due for a period for quite some time, but it seems too soon. It hasn’t even been a week yet since intercourse. Could this be a sign of conception?

A: may be a sign…better let her take a test. u can determine pregnancy after 10 days from sex

Q: What causes lower back pain in the morning?
I wake up every morning with lower back pain which it goes away by mid day. Its been more then a week. I had this problem in the past, but it went away, now is back. How do I know if its my mattress? My husband doesn’t get any pain from sleeping in the mattress.
What should I do? I went to see a Chiropractor and all he did was to pop my back.

A: Depends on the type of pain. You may want to do some stretching every morning or exercises to strengthen the lower back…or the abs.

Q: How do you relieve lower back pain in your 3rd trimester?
I’ve been sooo uncomfortable for about 2 weeks now. I have lower back pain across the back side of my hips. I know it’s just the baby putting pressure on my body, but I can’t sleep.

Q: How early does lower back pain start during pregnancy?
Hello out there,
I’m about 5 weeks pregnant and my lower back started to really hurt about a week or so ago. I didn’t know this symptom came this early but i guess it does. Did anyone else feel lower back pain really early or is it just me?

A: I had a little bit of back pain around 7 weeks and then it went away..then it came back really bad at 14 weeks. Now sometimes it hurts for a few days and then stops.

Q: How can I relieve pain from my lower back and knees?
After walking for 15-30 minutes+ I experience pain in my lower back and knees. Are there any exercises I can be doing to relieve this pain? I have shoe inserts for lower back pain but they don’t seem to be working.

A: As long as you have been to a dr and have ruled out any serious issues, then strengthening your core muscles will do wonders to ease your back pain. Your core muscles are the muscles in your torso and abs that support your spine. By having strong core muscles, they hold your spine in better alignment; allowing you to walk, without pain. As far as the pain in your knees it could be weakness that you need to build strength, or it could be the way you walk. You may not be walking/stepping properly so that overtime, the way you walk could be putting pressure on your joints and causing pain. Try doing an internet search for proper walking techniques and try to incorporate those into your walks. I have been wearing skecher shape-ups for a few months and I really like them; my lower back doesnt hurt now when i wear them for walks or even grocery shopping. But before you go and spend $100 on a potential “cure” I would try strenghening the core, making sure there is no physical problem, and making sure you are walking properly with proper alignment.

Q: I have constant lower back pain after standing for more than thirty minutes. What should I do?
I go to concerts frequently, and after about thirty minutes of standing my lower back is radiating with pain. I can always take Advil for pain relief, but is there anything else I can do? Should I wear any specific type of shoe? Thanks for your advice!

A: Most common cause of lower back pain is compression on the lower discs. Decompression could work. Decompression by using an inversion table or those expensive decompression tables Doctor’s use. Decompression therapy stretches your spine to relieve some of the pressure.

Decompression therapy can help to relieve lower back pain but it is always best to find the cause and eliminate it. I don’t know what your special circumstances are but I suffered from lower back pain a long time until I determined it was due to my bed. Hard to believe I know.

If you find your back pain is sharp when you first get out of bed in the morning the cause could very well be your bed. I documented my experiences with lower back and how I solved it with a memory foam bed. Visit the site below for more detailed information. It is not really a commercial site, (other than adsense that pays my monthly hosting fees) but I couldn’t come up with a good domain name because so many using the words ‘memory foam’ were taken,

Q: How do you relieve lower back pain?
I have been having extreme lower back pain lately.
I use a futon and a lower-back support chair.
I don’t have insurance, so a doctor or chiropracter is out of the question.

A: the therma care heat wraps are great! it healped so much that i am going to write the maker, i could not have gone to my sons 8th grade graduation, and you can buy the trial box at dollar genaral for 2.00. good luck and GOD BLESS, I REALLY KNOW HOW YOU FEEL! if you take pain med. take a tylenol with it to boost your pain med. that helps also.

Q: How do i stop lower back pain when i ride?
I ride horses. When i ride western, my back is fine. When i ride english, my back hurts after i have been posting for a good ammount of time. What can i do to stop the lower back pain when i post?

A: Stop riding english then. Stick to western only.

Q: How do I get rid of temporary lower back pain?
My lower back has been hurting for about a week now. How do I get rid of the pain without having to go to the chiropractor? I’ve been taking OTC back pain relievers, and they seem to help a little bit. Do you have any alternatives. I’d appreciate it. Thanks.

A: Actually pain relievers will only give you temporary relief at most. If you have had pain for a week, the ice/heat will seldom work as it is more effective in those first 48 hours.

What you need to do is stretch a few muscles as they are the likely source of most of your pain, and also get your joints moving.

You need to be able to work out what is wrong though or you may target the wrong areas. If you wish click the link below my name for a free diagnostic tool you can use o work out where your back pain comes from.

But then you need to stretch as this should help. even once the pain has eased, you still need to work on your back to make sure the pain doesn’t come back.

Take care

Q: Is it normal to have lower back pain after a tetanus or meningitis shot?
At the doctor yesterday they gave me two vaccines. One was a tetanus booster, and the other was a new one out for meningitis. I was told that my arm would hurt and I’d have a low fever, but there’s also this dull pain in my lower back. Is this a normal effect? I think it’s starting to go away along with the arm pain.

A: One would not expect to have lower back pain following vaccination. I suspect that your pain was just coincidence.

Q: What could be causing my lower left side back pain?
I have been in severe, crippling lower left side back pain for over a month now. The pain killers aren’t working, I can’t bend over to do anything without being in pain, and the xray revealed nothing. I can’t sit in my chair at work without being in pain. I have done NOTHING to injury my back. What are some possible things that could be causing my crippling lower back pain? Thanks.

A: have you had any bloodwork done? kidney problems can cause pain in the lower back

Q: Sever lower back pain after a night of laxatives what can I do now?
I was severely constipated, I am chronically constipated and the doctor took an xray last week and I go for a follow up next week. Anyway yesterday the pain got too bad and I tried several types of laxatives. About 1:00 am I finally was relieved of my condition and made several trips the bathroom.

Now I am in severe pain in my lower back just above the buttocks area and the pain is on both sides. Pain laying down, more pain if I try to get up, pain while sitting up.

It is a constant strain sharp pain that hurts more when I move and it is only in the lower back area.

Yesterday it was my back and stomach that hurt, now after being relieved it is just the back.

Anyone ever experience this trouble and what worked for you to first get out of pain?
What did you do to prevent from being chronically constipated to get to this point?
I have tried increasing fiber, water, and exercise with little results.

A: My daughter has the same problem. She has tried all sorts of things (fiber, etc.), but to no avail. She went to an herbalist and they mixed up some herbs for her. They seem to be the only thing that will help her. Evidently she has a very sluggish colon, though she had a colostomy and they said she was fine. Just keep trying by drinking a large glass of water when you first get up and as much as you can through the day. Fresh fruits and raw veggies, too. Cut back on the amount of sugar that you consume because I’ve heard that it can cause constipation, too. You probably irritated your colon by the laxatives. Try to eat something soft that won’t keep it irritated. Exercise helps, too. If nothing else, try to walk at least 30 minutes a day. Otherwise, good luck.

Q: Lower back pain, being caused by a longer leg than the other?
I’ve been having really bad lower back pain, lower right side. It feels like I’m walking with a high heel on my right leg. I can feel a difference in length when I walk, it hurts! My doctor is giving me a bone scan and doesn’t think that’s the problem. What do you think it could be?

A: Lets see, you went to your Dr. He decided to test you and before the test you decided he was wrong. I think it could be that you don’t know what is wrong and you are scared. Wait for the test results.

Q: I have lower abnominal pain, lower back pain with soft stool?
I felt my lower back pain a month ago, but i only felt that for 2 days. A couple of weeks ago and until now, i felt it again (before my period) but accompanied with lower abdominal pain now and sometimes i chill at night.
Please tell me what’s wrong with me.

A: It could be a range of things…std, trichomonasis, yeast infection, cystitis ,hernia, tumor/cyst in your colon…perhaps you ate something that didnt agree with you …sheesh contact your family doctor for a referral to a specialist or the appropriate testing.

Q: Do cross training ellipitcal machines cause lower back pain that spreads around the lower abdomen?
Just started working out after not working out for about 8 months. Only two days. But I have some pain in lower back and to the left and right of my belly. Has anyone else had pain (aching) after using these machines? I used them all the time years ago with no pain. Maybe I’m just getting old. Thanks.

A: i’ve got a ski machine that kills my back.
i have to use it like 15min. and take a short break.
my quess would be since neither my ski machine nor an ellpitical machine are the way we normally move that they will stress the muscles that aren’t use to being used in those motions.
i’ve used ellipitcals at the gym and i personally hate the motion.
i bike and lift weights and have no problems with those causing pain.

Q: I have lower back pain. when should I start to exercise again?
I picked up a bag weighing approx. 45kg and walked for about 300 meters. I got a pain in lower back since monday when I lifted it. I did boxing (i.e punching a sand bag) daily and weight training with a pair of dumbells (12kg each max) and Eliptical Bike but I am not doing them since monday. When should I start doing these exercises again?

Moreover I have starting taking pills which will fix back pain in 4 days.

A: Lower back pain isn’t a small matter…….

Really, you should allow time for your back to recover before you go back to exercise.

Rest is all you can do now.

Q: What can I do for this lower back pain?
I work in a job where I constantly walk around. Mostly on a hard surface. About halfway into my shift my knees pain, my lower back tightens up and pains, and it is very uncomfortable. Is there a specific shoe I could get to help me out or even maybe a brace?

A: Improving your shoes will help. Also some back exercises will too. I pulled up several on line with photos. My favorite is lay back flat with legs on seat chair so back flattens.About 10 minuents. Another is up against wall , the do slight knee bend. Then back up. Start just 2-3 and increase as feel better.Third is lay flat and hold leg straight and raise and hold for coumt 3-5, alternate legs.
You dont meantion age but if doing things to help dont work please see Dr for xrays as it may be arthritis. I was cashier many years and let mine go to far and am unable to work now. If you have benifits of insurance and disbility you may qualifie for physical therapy.

Q: How to stop lower back pain during my period?
When i get my period, my lower back starts to hurt and I get cramps, any good way to relieve these pains? (especially lower back)? besides advil, i have tried that and it helps a bit but my back still hurts. Its hard to concentrate on homework when my back hurts so bad!

A: Try an anti-inflammatory (I’m Aussie so i don’t know what kind of meds you guys have) but when i get my period i swell up with the cramps and the BAD back pain so i take something to aid in the pains as well as the swelling. And the old heated bag does the trick too get one with lavender scent to calm and soothe also :) hope that helps.

Q: Can stress cause lower back pain and lower abdomen pain?
HI there,

I’ve been noticing that when im at work, i get really bad lower back and lower abdomen pain. Ive been to the doctors and they told me that everything is good to go. Had some blood work, urine sample and a ultrasound that didn’t show anything. Ive been off work for 5 days, and im experiencing the same pain i was before being off? I do have a very stressful job, i am an american express supervisor in customer service.

A: Maybe you have something wrong in your back.Like a disk in your spine. The only way to find this out for sure is to get a MRI. I have 2 in my lower back and yes stress does make is worst. It took me years of going to see doctors and one asked me what I thougth it was .I told her my backbone. When they did do a Cat scan and she told me I had 2 disks that was screwed up.Maybe this will help you.God Bless

i have pain on my lower left abdomen going also to the lower back.usually happens when i am in a sitting position or usually in the car when i lay down after a while the pain goes away.what can it be?

A: It sounds like it could be your kidney. For years I had pain in my lower left abdomen that would come on every once in a while. I went to the e.r numerous times, but they never could figure out what it was until one time I went and the pain had spread into my back. That’s when they started checking my kidneys. It turned out that I had a UPJ (ureteropelvic junction obstruction). I then needed surgery to fix it.
So I’d suggest going to the e.r.

Good Luck!

Q: When pregnant, in the third trimester, is a low back pain always something to be worried about?
I’m 29 weeks. I have a low pain in my back. Should I be worried or just take it in stride?

A: Unless its really sharp pain it is probably just achiness from the extra weight and position of the baby. You’ll know if its something to be worried about. Usually a constant ache is just body soreness, but if it comes and goes with different intensities I would call the doctor to be safe : )

Q: How long do you leave a TENS unit on for low back pain and hip pain? Is there a limit to how long to keep on?
I have been having severe low back pain both sides, radiating into buttocks and left hip for 2 months. I just started using a TENS unit today with limited instruction. How long can I leave it on?

A: Mine cuts off after ten minutes, so that is all I do, ten minutes every hour.

Q: I am suffaring low back pain what type of swimming strokes can adviceble please explain me which strokes best?
I want to know what type of strokes best for relief low back pain ,Is it adviceble back stroke ?

A: Has your doctor recommended swimming to you? If you are having back pain, you should get the OK from a doctor before any type of new exercise! That said, swimming isn’t going to relieve low back pain, but it is a form of exercise that is much less jarring on your joints than aerobics, running, etc. Freestyle is the easiest and most natural body position. Stay relaxed and swim slowly and gently.

Q: What should I do about my severe low back pain?
I have had severe low back pain for a week now. When I wake up in the morning I struggle to get up out of bed. It hurts when I walk and even when I sit down. If I drop something on the floor I cannot pick it up. I have tried Motrin, aspirin, Alleve, and Tylenol, but nothing works. I also have cramps that resemble menstrual cramps. The back pain is literally immobilizing me. Any suggestions?

A: It’s important to determine the cause of your back pain.
This can really only be determined by taking a thorough history and doing a good physical exam.

You have been given advice to take more pain pills, muscle relaxers, etc.
That’s great unless you have a herniated disc……

point is, as this has been ongoing for 1 week, and has failed pretty agressive Over-the-counter meds, then I think it might be time to get it checked out especially if you are having any pains radiating down your legs

Q: What are some good excercises to do at the gym that will help ease my low back pain?
I have an almost constant low back pain that I think have incurred from doing some ab workouts the wrong way. I am a pretty active young male who goes to the gym often. Is there a few good stretches that I can do to warm up before lifting weights that will help me get rid of this pain?

A: You should take a yoga class, it did wonders for my back. I have no pain at all now.

Q: Is it normal to have too much low back pain at 29 weeks pregnant?
I’m 29 wks and have been having low back pain lately..

I had contractions since I was 25 wks pregnant, and I’m now 29 and although the contractions ceased considerably, I am not having low back pain…

Is this normal at this point? It doesn’t hurt to walk, but I feel it all the time and it’s not strong, but it’s there.. I also feel it radiating to my buttocks.

Thanks in advance.

A:
Back pain or discomfort is common during pregnancy and should be expected to some degree by most women. Back pain may be experienced during any point of your pregnancy; however, it most commonly occurs later in the pregnancy as the weight of the baby increases. Back pain can disrupt your daily routine or interfere with a good night of sleep.

You are not alone if you are experiencing back pain during your pregnancy. The prevalence varies with reports, showing between 50 to 70 percent of all pregnant women having back pain.
Hope this info helps…..

Q: Does chiropractic work for low back pain?
I am thinking of seeing a chiropractor for my low back pain anyone have any stories?

A: I used to have really severe back pain but couldn’t figure out the reason why… There can be a lot of possible causes so it’s better to have an MRI or CTScan just to be sure… I wouldn’t rely on internet opinions to treat this problem… I took my free scan at http://tinyurl.com/lcarcv

Q: I am getting bad low back pain what should I do?
I have very bad low back pain that lasts a day or two. It is on my right side and shoots down my right leg. I feel the pain in my right side as well. I don’t want to just take pain meds so I have not went to the dr. I thought about a chiropractor but still unsure. It is very painful and prevents me from holding my 13 month old….HELP. Should I just suck it up and go to my Dr?

A: I use The Back Pro for all my back and neck pain. I was introduced to it a couple of months ago and it really fixes any problems that come up, like waking up with pain in my hip, or lower back pain and muscle pain. I’ve been sleeping better and the pain in my thigh and leg when away very quickly. I use it every day, and I don’t have to take pain killers, which is something I really hate to do.

You can check it out at http://www.backcarepro.com/

Hope you get some relief soon.

Q: how long will i experience abdominal cramping and low back pain after my abortion? is this normal?
help me plz. i’ve had my medical abortion 3 weeks ago and still im experiencing abdominal crampings and low back pain. even if it is releived by ibuprofen, im still worried. plz help me.. my vaginal discharges has stopped. is this normal?

A: You should call the doctor who performed the procedure immediately. It is abnormal to have pain more than 2 weeks after the procedure.

Q: Is it normal to have LOW back pain after 26 weeks of pregnancy?
I’ve read that low back pain is a preterm labor symptom..

I’ve been having low back ache for 3 weeks.. It’s also listed as a normal pregnancy complaint..

A: I had all sorts of pains when I was pregnant!! No worries, you’ll know if its labor….

Q: What is a good , non surgical, method of resolving low back pain caused by a hernieated disk?
The disk pain is in my low back just above my sacrum. I am attempting to avoid surgery due to the fear that i will be unable to function as a person after the surgery. I have see the results of some surgery.. They patients have never been the same.
Oh yes, I am in China for the moment. I do not have access to a Chiropractor
I am studying Tai Chi every morning. It gets me outta bed and moving each day.. I can say that.

A: Surgery should be your last option.

I suggest seeing a physical therapist if necessary but avoiding poor posture. Positioning for comfort and daily abdominal crunches should help.

If it hurts don’t do it. And get a comfortable bed.

If you get back spasms due to the herniation, see your doctor, you may need an antispasmotic.

Low back pain is a chronic condition. There is no easy fix. Therefore, think long term solutions. You know your body and your pain better than anyone…gauge the effectiveness of your interventions by how you feel.

Don’t overly rely on pain meds. They can build tolerance and don’t cure you. Use them only for the really bad days. By the way, alternative pain interventions really work. Don’t think they don’t. Research yoga or meditation. Avoid chiropractors for herniated discs. They won’t help in the long run.

Hope that helps.

Q: Does anyone know of any good home remedy’s for chronic low back pain ?
I have chronic low back pain for the past 20 + yrs and I seldom go to the doctor for anything. I have used up all of my vacation time on my back and it still hurts a lot. It is very hard to walk sometimes. Bent over or limping towards one side. Any help would be great.

A: Hi Ed! Have you ever tried Tramadol? Tramadol is used to relieve moderate to moderately severe pain. Tramadol also may be used to treat pain caused by surgery and chronic conditions such as cancer or joint pain. Tramadol works by decreasing the brain’s perception and response to pain. Tramadol also reduces the size or magnitude of the pain signal passed from one nerve to another. Tramadol is a wonder drug for me! you can find more info on Tramadol at www.Buy-Tramadol-Online.info. also, You can Buy Tramadol Online with NO prior prescription and they ship via Fedex Overnight. Good Luck Dear!

Q: What is the best low-cost ergonomic office chair for lower back pain?
I have serious lower back pain with two dehyrdrated discs in the lumbar. I also have an office job. Sitting is absolutely killing me. I’m in physical therapy, but I’m hoping an ergonomic chair might help some too. Unfortunately I need to buy my own chair, and I can’t really pop for an Aeron. We just have your typical swivel, up/down task chairs. Does anyone have a suggestion for a sub-500(400 would be even better) ergo task chair?

A: Dehydrated Discs are part of the normal aging process. As you are already in Physiotherapy, then ask the Physiotherapist to refer you to a Occupational Therapist and they will first measure you up for a chair and then recommend a place where you can purchase one. As for cheap chair, no such thing. However you can buy chair supports but again you need to ask PT or OT for the best type for your problem. Best of Luck

Q: What causes sudden and severe low back pain?
I’m in good shape and in my mid 30’s but over the past year I have, for no discernible reason, been hit (all of a sudden and on 2 different occasions) with debilitating lower back pain that just cripples me for days and then goes away.

A: You might have spinal vertabrae out of place, or you might have something else going on, like gallbladder disease – that often causes back problems – or even kidney stones which will hurt your mid- to lower back.

Q: Why and how to cure low back pain after basketball workouts?
2 days ago i had pain in the lower back. I can’t bend very well without pain. Does anyone know anything about it???

A: We need more information. Exactly at what point can you bend your back without pain? (Flexion and extension measurements?) Do you feel any pain going down your thigh? (which is a sign of radiculopathy of the spine). Can you rotate your back? How much do you weigh? How long are your workouts?

It sounds like you have a back strain but you may want to see an orthopedic physician and do an MRI if the injury gets worse.

Good luck.

Q: I am trying to find a solution to upper back pain in pregnancy?
K i have been having upper back pain lately, I am trying to keep my posture correct. However, i dont have any tylenol or ibuprofen. i have tried reading up on upper back pain in pregnancy and all im getting is lower back pain solutions. Has anyone ever experienced this or knows of how i can stretch my back safely without hurting the baby?

A: yes! Mine is right around my bra strap…it is mainly the muscles being pulled (bigger chest and tummy) I have found that a heating pad and tylenol help, as does ben gay or any type muscle rub..it really does help! Also if this seems to bother you more at night you can (check with dr first!) take tylenol pm….1 does it for me, it helps with the pain and also helps you rest so the muscles can rest too. I hope you feel better! GOD BLESS~~~

Q: What could be causing my upper back pain?
For a little over a week I have been getting upper back pain along my spine in between my shoulders, and below my neck. Its gotten increasingly worse and made my muscles tense up. Sometimes it radiates into my neck or makes my arm get weak and numb. Ive also been getting headaches which make me extremely nauseous. For the past month or so I’ve lost a lot of weight without trying and haven’t been able to eat much because it makes me nauseous. Could the two problems be related?

A: Most upper back pain is muscular and will resolve on its own within a few weeks. Read more about upper back muscle pain here:

http://www.living-with-back-pain.org/upper-back-muscle-pain.html

If you are having pain and weakness in your arms you may have a disc pushing on a nerve in your neck. You need to see your doctor so he can examine you and possibly order an MRI of you cervical spine.

Good Luck

Q: What is usually the cause of very painful upper back pain?
The pain I experience is usually located below my neck and in my upper back. It feels like someone with extremely icy hands is pinching on my spine.

A: sounds like a pinched nerve…..see a dr for sure……

Q: I’m 22 and have been having upper back and chest pain for the last 3 days. Sometimes dull, others stabbing. ?
For the last 3 days I have been experiencing chest pain and upper back pain. At times it also has been radiating under my arms. Part of the time it is very dull, and others it is stabbing. And then there are times where I have not pain at all.
I’m 22. I have had a cold recently. A little cough, but that has gotten better over the last few days.
Any suggestions or answers would be greatly appreciated.

A: I am not a doctor, but my husband was having pain in his chest, and back. He thought he was having a heart attack. He had recently had a cold also. We went to the e.r., and after a chest x-ray, they told us he had pleurisy. It is mucus, or fluid around your lung causing pain. The doctor explained it to us like this. He said it was like pneumonia, only instead of being inside the lung, it’s outside the lung. I suggest you get to a doctor, and find out what is wrong. Normally it isn’t your heart if the pain comes and goes, but you never know.

Q: Can someone help me with my upper back pain?
I slipped and fell a week ago and my upper back, into my neck and shoulders has been severly hurting. It doesn’t hurt during certain times such as moving, lifting things, etc. It just constantly hurt very bad. I’ve had x-rays and the doctor said they looked fine, I’ve been taking pain killers, muscle relaxers, and icing my back and they don’t even touch the pain. Is it really possible that there is nothing wrong and it is just my muscles/tendons? Someone please help and/or give some advice, the pain is unbearable.

A: Get a second opinion….if nothing else it will make you feel better..

Peoples pain tolerance are different. You could have injured your muscles and/or tendons….Be careful with the pain killers the doctors give you or you will be a drug addict in no time.
Try heat such as sitting in hot tub, bath tub will work. They did not give you any inflammatorys? Like ibuprofen? I would go in and get a second opinion if it is still hurting like this!
With all the arthritis’s I have, I have been told never to go to a chiroproctor…
Good luck and do not get hooked on those drugs………

Q: What could my upper back pain be from?
I have had upper back pain for over a year now. I have slight scoliosis but I don’t think it would be causing me this much pain for so long. I feel like I can’t even sit or stand correctly. I have been to the doctor for this and I was told to go get an mri but my parents do not take me seriously and will not take me. Asprin and Aleve only slighty ease the pain for a few hours. What could this pain be from?

A: Scoliosis can cause severe problems since it pulls your spine out of alignment. Once that happens all sorts of health problems will occur. Talk to your parents seriously about getting some medical help ASAP!

Q: Can cancer of the breast cause upper back pain?
Can cancer of the breast cause upper back pain? I have upper back pain and discomfort on the center of my chest, that cover a little of the right area of my breast. I haven’t been diagnosed with cancer.

A: It sounds more muscular than like breast cacner.

Breast cancer in the early stages is usually painless.

Q: Can indigestion cause upper back pain and swelling?
Every so often my upper back swells and I get pain. But it seems to go away for awhile after I belch a number of times or take an an antacid. Is this discomfort caused by indigestion?

A: The pain could be caused from gas but I can’t imagine it causing swelling in your back.

Q: Why do I have middle to upper back pain every morning?
For the past few weeks every morning around 7am I wake up with extreme middle to upper back pain. It goes away once I get up and move around. I recently started going to the chiropractor and it seems to be getting worse. I’m a pretty active person; I work out 5 days a week; 3 days cardio, 2 days weight lifting. I invested in a new pillow which isn’t helping. My mattress is pretty old…
Looking for some advice! Thanks.

A: BigRed,

Extreme? that sucks. Chiro making it worse? that sucks WORSE! It sounds like its not a simple issue of core muscles, since you work out (if you don’t have core routines, add them into your workout).

I suspect a problem with bed posture. You mention the old mattress, it could be that its sagged so severely that perhaps your hips and middle back are bending which is causing your upper back and shoulders to compensate somehow. Try the following:

Sleep on the floor with some pillows, or on a mat or a couch, and see what changes.

- If you sleep on your side put a small towel roll (hand towel) just above your hip on your side.

- If you sleep on your back put a flat pillow vertically under your back so your shoulders and back are raised a bit. Don’t tilt your head back but move it back, keeping it looking straight at the ceiling.

– If you sleep on your stomach, then … well … don’t :) switch to sleeping on your side or your back. It might be uncomfortable at first but you’ll get used to it. You can even switch in the middle of the night, just do what you can.

I hope this helps and you can get up without feeling the back pain,
John

Q: 6 times in the last 3 months, I have experienced middle to upper back pain or pressure – I suspect gas?
Usually the middle to upper back pain or pressure – frenzy, sweating, shock happens approx 30 to 60 minutes after eating a salad or maybe cucumber. My doctor is looking in to liver enzymes and gallstones. I think it is a gas trap pushed against my back nerves. Any ideas what it might be?

A: it could be gas i dont know that happened to me on my right side, it really hurt i thought it was something else but i took an antacid and it completely went away. i was in pain for like 2 weeks on and off

check on webmd to see what else it could be http://symptoms.webmd.com/symptomchecker

Q: How do I treat upper back pain?
I am having upper back pain that whenever I strain it either by working out or by throwing hard (I’m a baseball player), it gets extremely tight and it becomes hard to breathe for some reason. Are these back spasms? And how should I treat the pain? My back feels tight all the time but whenever I twist too hard is when I can’t breathe and it gets extremely tight.

A: I think you have strained your back from over-exerting yourself. You may need to rest from all physical sports/exercises until it improves. In the mean time hot pads on the area may assist. If the pain persists longer than 48 hours or so see your GP.

Q: what the most common causes of upper back pain?
i heard that anxiety can cause pain in upper and lower back is true ? upper pain does not always mean or point to pancreatic cancer does it?! Thanks Mike–

A: It might be a bulging disc,a slipped disc,a strained muscle or a wide range of other things. I’ve got a rib that slips in and out of its socket around the mid area and it can really hurt. My bulging discs and degenerative disc disease and degenerative arthritis is all painful as well. One of my sciatic joints slips out at times and this can be extremely painful. there are so many back problem possibilities to name,it would probably take many pages to fill. The best thing you could do is let a professional diagnose it and stop worrying. There’s been a lot of advances in this area. Good luck and feel better soon.

Q: Is it true you can get upper back pain if the back is exposed to air when sweating after excercising?
Its just that i have a upper back pain at the moment, i mean i can walk, dont have breathing difficulties or anything but can it be because of the sweat being exposed to air after working out, im sure i just layed down on the bed when my back was sweating after a work out and next morning i got a lingering pain at my upper back, is this normal?

A: Thats normal, its the muscle pain, sweat comes out of your body, its not able to hurt you on the outside or insidem however, you should no your limits and when you ache, you take a rest for 1 week to recover, next time take it more easy and use a towel or w.e to wipe the sweat away.

Q: Upper back pain when I take break from bikram yoga?
I have been doing bikram yoga fairly regularly for over 1 year. I go about twice a week. I have been busy and it has been unseasonably nice outside so I haven’t been to bikram for 1 week. My next and upper back (between the upper part of the shoulder blades) is really bothering me. I had no back pain before starting bikram. Has anyone experienced this before?

A: All the time.

I do Asthanga and if I miss more than a few days, my whole body hurts, especially the upper back and shoulders and my joints.

It’s because your body is accustomed to the exercise and stretching. Stress and toxins build up in the muscles. Yoga releases them.

You can do the yoga w/out the hot part at home or outside to keep your body happy.

Q: What could be causing a cough and upper back pain?
I had a pretty bad cold for a couple weeks. The other symptoms cleared up, but the cough is getting worse instead of better. I’ve also started getting sharp pains around my upper back, especially when I start coughing, and usually on the right side.

My sister is a nursing student. She said she heard crackling in one lung and some wheezing in the other.

Any ideas on what it could be?

A: if you’re sure the pain increases with coughing then it’s your lungs. if it’s around your back then it’s most likely in the lower lobe.

It’s probably pneumonia caused by the infection. They usually clear up by themselves if you’re young and the organism is weak but since it’s getting worse go see a doctor as soon as possible

Q: What is the best bed for back pain relief?
I recently had back surgery to repair a ruptured disk in my upper back. My current bed is very old and worn, and I believe that it is contributing to the back pain that awakens me when I try to sleep in my bed. I don’t have much money for a new bed – what can I do to find some relief?

A: All I can say is the experience I have had and I truly hope my advice, will help..DO NOT SLEEP on a hard floor! I have had back surgery removing dics 4 and 5, a rod was placed, eight screws and a cage, you do NOT need to be laying on a very hard surface, YES it puts your back in straight alignment, but you do not want that as it is NOT comforming to the natural curves of the spine! You NEED somthing that when you place your hand under your lower back when laying down, COMFORMS TO YOUR LOWER BACK! YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE A SPACE BETWEEN YOUR BACK AND THE BED! I have had this surgery, and I have had 4 years of physical therapy (unsuccessful may I add due to my condition) and I dropped 80 pounds..I have come to discover Firm or too soft is no help..I bought a dial a number sleep comfort bed, and it has helped me immensley! You can choose the number most comfortable for you, and it adjusts differently on each side, so each spouse can adjust to their needs..I found the middle number BEST for me..I will never ever be pain free, I was explained by my orthopedist ( and I went to 4 different orthos, getting four different opinions after FREAKING out when I learned the back surgery they each said I needed)..As I will always have back pain, it was reduced with spinal supportive surgery, and I invested in the sleep number bed, and yes I still do use meds, I have NO choice…IM telling you, you must investigate this type of sleep bed for your self, my hubby on the other hand had the same exact surgery himself, and can NOT sleep in the sleep number bed or ANY bed since his back surgery, he sleeps on the recliner, as laying on his back is too painful! My advice to you, is to check out the sleep number bed and ALSO THE CRAFTMATIC bed…the craftmatic bed adjusts to your position when you sleep..YOU NEED to do some “Investigative” shopping..And some of these bed manfacturers will let you try their beds out on a 30 day free trial…As for my hubby and I we are checking into the craft matic bed, if I can switch over to it, I will, I feel horrible he has to sleep on the recliner since his surgery almost a year ago :(
Please do your self a favor, never take advice from anyone that hasnt gone through these chronic back problems, DO ask a licensed Physical therapist!!! And PLEASE DO NOT sleep on a floor or a very hard surface!!! That is OLD wives tales for people that do not have “chronic”back pain, and you can do MORE HARM to your back!
GOOD LUCK and BETTER HEALTH to YOU!!!

Q: I have had excruciating lower back pain for years now. Can you help me get lower back pain relief?
The pain is also radiating from the groin and buttocks down the right leg to ankle. Does anyone have a suggestion how I can get lower back pain relief without any surgery? Please note that I have had my fair share of “specialist” consultant visits with no positive results at all.

A: Hi Suphee,

I know just what you are talking about. Having suffered from severe lower back problems myself, I am very aware how debilitating this condition can be.

What most doctors recommended me when I consulted them about my back pain is to take addictive muscle relaxers and pain killers. And some even advised surgery, which is of course is the very last thing I wanted to hear about.

I never found a satisfactory method or cure to relief my back pain until I came across this revolutionary system which teaches you how to self-asses your specific condition and how to correct it.

One of the neatest aspects of this self assesment is that it takes away the guessing. The very first step involved having my wife take pictures of my posture in several different specified positions and angles. This was used in determining which stretches and exercises I should perform to CORRECT the problem.

I learned that most back pain is caused by muscle imbalances which lead to compensation therefore pain. The exercises and stretches that you will perform, are intended to correct those imbalances which will get rid of your pain.

It worked very well for me, within four weeks I have been transformed into a new person. Now I am back at work and feel fantastic when I get up in the morning. Give it a try yourself, you have got nothing to lose, but your pain.

Q: Has anyone within ‘earshot’ had any sort of lower back pain relief with an inversion table?
I may have a pinched nerve in my lower back. In any case, it’s a dull, intermittent pain that is more nagging and chronic than severe and acute. But I cannot get relief. Has anyone tried an inversion table as a means of stretching the spine and lower back muscles, possibly relieving pressure on the nerves down there? I’m looking to try and remedy this myself before I go to a doctor. Thanks.

A: Jennifer, it is a legitimate way to treat a lower back problem. Remember to take it slowly into a full inversion position. By that I mean it should be done incrementally not a full drop into inversion. It will take days to achieve a full position. There are some exercises that you can try to stop the pain before investing in an inversion table. They might sound silly but they work and the only thing that you will need is a straight chair such as a kitchen chair. Sit in the chair and raise the left arm up as high as you can and then do the same with the right arm. One arm will go up higher than the other and you will start with that arm. Raise that arm up as high and hard as you can for thirty seconds and then rest for fifteen seconds. Repeat that twice more and then do the opposite side. Do all three cycles of the movement using the thirty seconds as hard as you can and then the fifteen second rest period. Next turn the head to the left as hard as you can and then turn to the right. One side will turn further so start with that side. Turn towards that side for thirty seconds as hard as you can and then rest for fifteen seconds. Repeat that twice more and then do the same three cycles on the opposite side. Get up and move around and the back should feel freer and in less pain. Return to the chair and make sure that your feet are planted flat on the floor and don’t shift. Twist to the left as far as you can go and then go to the right. One side is going to turn further so start in that direction. Twist in that direction for thirty seconds as hard as you can and then rest for fifteen seconds. Repeat that routine twice more and then go to the other side and do the entire routine three times. Get up and walk around and the back should feel better and freer. Lastly return to the chair and do this movement. Bring the Left knee up to the Right shouder and then bring the Right knee up to the Left shoulder. One movement should be freer so start with that side. Bring the one knee up to the opposite shoulder as hard as you can for thirty seconds and then rest for fifteen seconds. Repeat that twice more and then go to the other side and do three cycles of the movements. Now get up and move around. The back at this stage should feel somewhat better. Do this entire routine at least once a day and if possible twice.

Q: Looking for natural back pain relief?
I have been looking for a natural treatment for my lower back pain. The pain is sometimes unbearable, but at others it only aches. I have been doing yoga and pilates, but I still have back pain. The chiropractor helps, but it hurts so much to get an adjustment that i don’t know which is worse. Any suggestions? I’d like to be free of the $75 that the chiropractor charges.

A: I found this great resource for back pain treatment, including stuff for lower back pain. This healer wrote a book on how to do chiropractic adjustments on yourself, but without cracking! It’s really cool, I had problems with my neck, and now I can just adjust it even if I am waiting at a light or something. The back adjustments are a little more, but I helped my girlfriend a couple of days ago, and she’s fine now. We just followed the instructions and looked at the photos to see how to do it.

It turned out that my neck problem was because I ate too much sugar, believe it or not. Taht’s in the book too. You can download it, and it’s cheaper than a chiropractic visit.

Q: Is there such thing as narcotic pain patch as in those back pain relief patches and icy hot?
If so, does anyone know if they work versus taking pain meds orally?

A: Yes, there is a fentanyl patch. This is a pretty strong opioid pain medication and the patch releases it into your blood stream over the course of a few days.

Q: Who has used the Medisana Back Pain Relief System and why?
I’m thinking about buying this for my lower back. Is this like the shock therapy they use in sports medicine(you know, the one that makes your muscles twitch)?? Sometimes my sciatic nerve sack acts up from being pinched. Will this help me?

A: Yes I use this at physical therapy for my sciatica nerve issues…

Actually woot.com has this on sale today.

Q: Which is the best back pain relief spray/ointment?
I am suffering from a severe lower back pain for the past 2 years… I am working in the IT industry… which demands long sitting for hours… I tried both English and Ayurvedic Medicines… There is no effect at all…

Can anyone please prescribe any pain relief spray/ointment which I can use to avoid the pain temporarily? Also please let me know its price in India…
Thanks in advance…

A: You could try icy hot. That feels really good, but the side effect is that it stinks really bad. Well, it stinks to me. You can’t prescribe any medicine over the internet. You’ll need to go see a real doctor.

I don’t know if they sell icy hot in India.

Q: are there complaints against back2life back pain relief machine, does it work?
does this machine work to relieve lower back pain?

A: I just recently saw the infomercial, and also wondered about it, so I’ve started doing some research. A good place to start is

www.infomercialscams.com/scams/
back_2_life_complaints

So far, only one complaint, but it’s a big one. Shipped product had a broken part, and purchaser had problems getting it replaced. Company doing billing/shipping is perhaps shady. Does the machine work? Hard to say, so I’m going to build my own (I think I can do this easily and cheaply). I’ll let you know how it goes.

Q: Preventing A Sore, Stiff Back – What Works For Back Pain Relief?
Looking for sites on back pain relief exercises as well.

A: Keep your back as straight as possible. Good posture is key to preventing a sore, stiff back. Massage is fantastic to relieve back pain — use some natural oil for greater effect. Regular exercise helps loosen the muscles & joints and maintain body flexibility. This is important to prevent sudden cramps and lower back pain.

Q: What is the difference between a facet block and an epidural injection for back pain relief?

A: Epidural anesthesia is just a numbing agent to help deal with the pain. Facet block is trying to find the facet joint capsule that could be the cause of the pain and reduce inflammation via injecting steroids (usually) and/or administering pain medication.

Check out the sources.

Q: does using a back support vest help with lower back pain relief?
what type/brand to go for and some details on how it can help with pain relief should be included..

A: NO! I was given a back support brace by the PT and instruction ONLY to wear it while lifting, driving, but NOT all day, because all that happens is you allow the muscles to waste away. Best of Luck

Q: what do you know about the benefits of using magnets for back pain relief?
will you please have a look at this http://www.quelle.ro/ro/q4r/home/suche/FH_bmZoX3BhZ2V0eXBlPWRldGFpbCZuZmhfYWN0aW9uPXNlYXJjaCZmaF92aWV3X3NpemU9MTAmJmZoX3NlY29uZGlkPXJvXzcxMjEyJmZoX2xpc3Rlcl9wb3M9MCZmaF9sb2NhdGlvbj0lMmYlMmZxdWVsbGVfcm8lMmZyb19STyUyZiUyNHMlM2RpbmRyZXB0YXRvciU1Y3UwMDIwc3BhdGUmZmhfZWRzPSVjMyU5ZiZmaF9yZWZ2aWV3PXNlYXJjaA==//m-71212/index.html ?

did you used such thing ?
Is it possible to use it while making an effort, such as phisical exercise? Can someone be ok to wear it all day long ?

A: I used this product and found it worked wonderfully all the time

anytime I go to a fair and i overexert or my neck, back, shoulders, knees etc hurt I put on my magnets and usually by morning or even sooner it is gone. I have won them for many days in a row.

I do not think the product you showed is strong enough being only 400 gauss.

Be aware that about 5 years ago magnelyfe changed the tape from the great waterproof tape that stayed on for three days during showers and even swimming to this inferior tape that falls off sometimes in minutes.

I use other tapes some I have found online if on a place where it stays in contact like the neck, you can put one magnet on the outside of the neck of the clothes and one on the inside and this will hold well

I used waterproof first aid tape and make sure I have enough on there to hold it on for a while as they are expensive to lose.

Look around and you will probably find it cheaper than the link..I got last for $15,00 for two (think it was vita-life or vita health or something like that

here is what they look like be sure to put the n (north) side to the skin

You really should also use a chiropractor trained by the palmer method.

I have been in about 20 car wrecks and was run over by a car and recently hit in driver’s side at 50 mph so I know pain in back/neck/shoulders and knees.

I thank god ofr magnets and my chiropractor also use hot and cold showers (I will post how below)

and use a good body cream like little moon a##kisser herbdoc balm or herbdoc.com ’s deep tissue repair oil also

Q: Any advice or information on epidural injections for back pain relief?
I have a herniated disc between my L5 and S1 vertebrae, and sciatica…my Dr. wants to give me a series of epidural injections for pain relief. Anyone know if this works, or have any experience with it?
I’m looking for alternatives to surgery…it looks like epidurals, or a lifetime supply of Lortabs…none of it is fun in my book…
I never had back pian, except for during “that time of the month”, I’m not a small girl, I’m 5′11 and weigh almost 200 pounds, my BF and I went swimming, and decided it would be fun to do some cannonball dives into the pool…sounds fun right, The pool was only 5 feet deep, and I had a running start, jumped, and smacked my butt on the bottom of the pool hard!!!
I was in extreme pain at the time of impact, then it faded, but came back with a vengance the very next day…I went to urgent care, the did an x-ray, found nothing, and tried to tell me it was just a muscle spasm…the pain grew & continues to grow more severe on a daily basis, I kept going to Drs, the kept telling me there was nothing really wrong with me & sent to me tio physical therapy…that did not work…One day, at work, I nearly collapsed because the pain got so bad…I went to the ER, and they gave me a pelvic exam! (DUH). Nothing wrong there!!! It took a year for me to save up for an MRI, and voila! There it was!
I manage a women’s clothing store, and my work is very physically demanding, wich has only made the injury worse!!! I am in constant pain & I’m getting soooo sick of having to take pain meds, when half the time, they don’t help anyway….

A: i am a chiropractor and specialize in spine related injuries. the disc acts as both a cushion and a spacer between each vertebrae. if a disc is bulging, that bulge can put pressure on the nerves exiting between each vertebra which causes a “pinched nerve.” also if the disc is wearing out (getting thinner) you lose the space between the vertebra, which leaves less room for those nerves to exit–and again can “pinch” a nerve. those nerves in your low back form the sciaitc nerve which runs all the way down your leg. if any are “pinched” they can cause severe pains from your low back to the foot.

as a chiropractor i see this type of scenario on a daily basis. for those who have degenerative disc disease, disc herniation, disc bulging, etc.–normal chiropractic care can usually help with those problems. but there are also many people out there that have had this problem for many years and can’t find relief with anything they try–including chiropractic.

but now there is a treatment that is perfect for your situation and the best part is: it’s non-surgical and non-invasive. if you haven’t heard of it yet there is a newer treatment out there called spinal decompression. this type of treatment focuses on disc injuries and the problems they cause. i use the DRX9000 spinal decompression system in my office and it works wonders for people with these types of injuries. the DRX9000 is fda approved and is the best decompression system available (there are cheap knock-offs that don’t give the same results).

my recommendation would be to research this treatment and then contact someone (usually a chiro) who uses it in their office. i would just google “DRX9000″ to find info on it and doctors in your area who may have it. this treament is able to encourage the disc to go back to it’s normal orientation and also rebuild its height–which then takes the pressure off whatever nerve it is compressing. this problem is not going to go away by itself and PT is not going to help. something needs to be done to change the discs and the only thing that can actually do this effectively is spinal decompression. PT’s will argue on this but it’s obvious that it isn’t working for you. doing exercises or the mckenzie method won’t do you any good because they can’t change the disc.

this treatment is extremely effective for degenerative disc disease, disc bulging, herniation, etc. and also sciatica type of cases, especially if you haven’t had surgery yet. i’ve had many patients who were scheduled for surgery, tried this treatment as a last resort, and then ended up cancelling their surgery altogether after treatment was completed. it really does work and that’s what my recommendation would be for you. good luck and hopefully this gives insight to others experiencing similar problems–there is a solution!!!

Q: What is the safest over the counter medicine for long term pain relief? Back pain?

A: There arean’t any really good long-term over the counter treatments. It’s a better idea to go to your doctor who’ll prescribe something safe for you to take a lot, and it’ll probably be stronger too!

It worked very well for me, within four weeks I have been transformed into a new person. Now I am back at work and feel fantastic when I get up in the morning. Give it a try yourself, you have got nothing to lose, but your pain.

Q: What are some good exercises to help relief back-pain with ankylosing spondylitis?
I have ankylosing spondylitis and was taking enbril but due to insurance issues can no longer afford it what are some exercises I can do to keep on top of my lower back inflammation?

A: Here are two good back exercises that should help you get some relief. The second one you can do all the way to the end of your tailbone if you want:
Back:
Place your left hand on your left knee. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and with your fingertips find the muscle next to your spine. Press on it and hold. Relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. After about 30 seconds there should be a release happening and when it does slowly lower yourself forward onto your right leg. If you can lean over the outside edge of your leg it will be better for your release. Continue holding for a total of one minute. Then release but rest your body there for one minute longer. Then reverse and do the right side.
For lower back, on the buttocks:
Put both hands behind your back and place them on the muscles alongside your spine and press on them and hold. Now relax, take a deep breath and exhale and don’t tense up any part of your body. When the release starts to happen, slowly lower yourself forward as far as you can go. Then release the pressure but hold your body there for one minute longer.

Q: What is the best way to relief back pain??
After a long day at work, my back hurts and I need to find ways to stop the pain, any ideas?

A: surprisingly, working out makes you more flexible and able to sustain painful days at work easier. also, think about getting a new matress, possibly one of those foam memory ones. if all else fails, a chiropractor can help.

Q: What is the safest over the counter medicine for long term pain relief? Back pain?

A: There arean’t any really good long-term over the counter treatments. It’s a better idea to go to your doctor who’ll prescribe something safe for you to take a lot, and it’ll probably be stronger too!

Q: How can I finally get relief from back pain?
I had two spinal operations in recent years and I still have significant pain in my right leg from the original injury. The operations stopped it from getting worse, but didn’t really make it better. I’ve taken all kinds of medications, had electrical stimulation, acupuncture, the works. Any hints?

A: Years ago, one of the world’s leading spine surgeons made this statement at a large medical conference in Las Vegas, Nevada:

“Your first back surgery is your best chance, your second back surgery is your last chance.”

You are done with surgery. It hasn’t solved your problem (in fact, it may be the cause of your continuing problems).

Couple of suggestions. First, how many Chiropractic evaluations/consults have you had? A good Chiropractor may be a very valuable resource for you.

Second, there is a wonderful book available that explains the many unappreciated causes of chronic pain and how to effectively treat the causes to relieve the pain. If you read this book, you will understand the many ways that surgery and even pain medications can actually aggravate and cause long-term chronic pain.

The book is written by Sherry Rogers, M.D. and is called: “Pain Free in 6 Weeks”. It is available at Amazon.com or from the publisher at 1-800-846-6687. I highly recommend this book.

Best wishes and good luck.

Q: What is the best “around the house” relief from back pain.?
I do not take ANY types of medications, so I am loking for a temporary “home remedy” for back pain. Thanks!

A: the couch with ur feet up

Q: What’s the best way to get rid of lower right back pain?
I’m looking for a quick way to get rid of lower right back pain without going to a chiropractor or without any meds.

A: Sorry to hear about your pain. I was researching about the same thing, and came across some info on this site. www.lowerrightback-pain.com .It talks about some quick and simple exercises you can do to get rid of the pain. Good luck!

Q: what would be the cause of lower right back pain?
I have lower back pain on my right side and it is a sharp pain. It hurts when I lay on my side and it hurts when sit up or move around. Could anyone please help me with my problem and tell me what’s wrong with me? I’m a broke college student and I don’t have the money to pay for an emergency room bill. Thanks!

A: Hi Rettajean. As you can see, the answers on this site can be quite ‘diverse’.

A correct diagnosis cannot be made from the limited information you give (and without a good physical examiniation). Did your pain start suddenly or gradually? Does anything (e.g. any position) make it better? Have you had this type of pain before? These are some of the basic questions your doctor should ask.

Additional questions include the following. Did you injure yourself or do any excessive activity prior to the onset of the pain (sudden twisting or fall or lifting or sports excesses, ect.)? Are you having any difficutly with urination? Change in bowel function? Menstrual problems? Do you have a fever? Chills or night sweats? Leg pains or numbness? Any muscle weakness in the legs? Does coughing or sneezing aggravate the pain? These are just some of the questions that need to be answered to help guide your healthcare professional to a correct diagnosis.

Note: If you answer ‘yes’ to any of the above questions, you really should see your doctor or Chiropractor.

Have you tried ice (cryotherapy) to see if that will help the pain? If you do not have an icepack designed for this, you can buy one at any drug store or you can use a large bag of frozen vegetables (corn or peas work well).

Place the icepack or veggies in a thin pillow case cover and place that on your area of pain. Apply the icepack for 20 minutes (if you are doing it correctly you will feel periods of cold, burning, aching, pins/needles and then analgesia/numbness). Do not keep the icepack on more than about 20 minutes. You need to give the area a 1 hour period without ice to allow for return of healing blood flow and to prevent frost bite (freezer burn!). After one hour you can apply the icepack again for another 20 minutes. Repeat as needed.

Best wishes and good luck!

Q: is lower right back pain a symptom of pregnancy?
i think this is my month. i am ttc for sometime. i had lower right abdominal cramps for about 3 days….i think that was implantation cramps and today i have mild lower right back pain. has anyone had it before? i going to take pregnancy test on friday as that would be apt. Thanks in advance.

A: I’m 19 weeks along now and when I do have back pain in this pregnancy, it’s always been on the lower right side, for some reason. Not sure if that makes it a sign but it’s possible, as I know I’m definitely pregnant!

Good luck and lots of baby dust!!

Q: Prolonged and Persistent Upper Right Back Pain?
I’ve been having this weird pain (it’s a nagging pain which never really go off at all) at my upper right back for more than a year. The pain is specifically at one spot but it has now spread to the bottom right back (near the lower right rib cage).

Sometimes, when the pain is getting a little too much to bear, it’ll be painful to breathe in deep.

Anyone encountered this problem before? What is your diagnosis?

A: Been there. Had my spine knocked out of whack at a job, just by reaching too high for something. Went to a Chiropractor, he said the back had a subluxation (out of alignment) causing the muscles to contract. One adjustment was all I ever needed for this. Instant relief for me.

Q: What is this lower [right] back pain?
Today I had a sore abdomen, but now I have a pain on my lower right back.

I started taking some medication my doctor had once prescribed to me for infections, but I was wondering if someone else could else hint or guess at what it is before I freak even more.

The pain itself is felt on my lower back, to the right side, and I can sort of feel it on my lower abdomen, too; mainly on the right. My abdomen feels slightly sore, but I’m guessing it’s an infection [I'm capable of getting urinary infections or any other kind of infections because my appendix burst a couple of years back].

Any idea? Help?

A: It could be a U.T.I. (urinary tract infection). Or kidney stones. Have you tried drinking cranberry juice? Along with quite a bit of water?Look at your urine. It should be almost clear. If you’re having allot of cramps it could be stones. You should probably go to the doctor. After you’ve used the same antibiotics several times they lose the effectiveness. Sorry you are feeling yucky.

Q: What is causing my lower right side back pain?
Since early this morning I have been having pain in the lower right side of my back. Right above the hip. Then when I went to use the restroom after I went there was some blood. Then after that I went several times more and there was no blood. Anyone have any clue as to what this can be?

A: I have had pain in the lower right side of my back for about a year now, but which has got worse in the last two months. Having seen a Doctor and Physiotherapist I’ve come to the conclusion that it has been the result of bad posture, i.e. slouching in chairs, not bending knees when lifting heavy things.

One exercise you can use to improve flexibility is to lie face down on the floor and use your arms to push the top half of your body up into a sort of press up position until you feel a little strain in your lower back, hold for 3 seconds and repeat 10 times or so.

Q: I am a runner with constant lower right back pain when pressure is applied to right foot. What’s going on?
I have a constant pain for the last few days when pressure is applied to my foot. I got into my 4th mile Fri and had to stop due to the pain. I have since been using the elliptical which seems not to bother me! I am 26 yrs old and feel as if i’m to young to have back pains lol. It even pains when walking! Any advice or similiar pains from anyone else?

A: Check your feet alignment, seems one foot is causing the problem, so you need to see a Podiatrist, get your feet checked and perhaps special insoles. Good Luck

Q: Right upper back pain and a headache?
I have the worst pain in my upper right back area, close to my shoulder blade. It feels like I have to crack my back. I can’t even take a deep breath it hurts so bad. I also have a headache, I am not sure that the two are related as I had the headache yesterday before the back pain. Any ideas if the two could be related and also how to get rid of this pain, it’s terrible. I’ve had it before, in the same place, could it be something that I have to have looked at?

A: In reality, the two can very well be related, but I feel that the main problem is the one in your back and not the headache. What it sounds like is a subluxation (misaligned bone) causing nerve impingement. The subluxation could be of a vertebra in your spine or one of the ribs. The most likely muscle being affected is the trapezius muscle. This muscle attaches both in the upper back area and the back of the skull, therefore tension in this muscle can produce a tension headache as well as upper back pain. The absolute best way to take care of this is to go to a chiropractor.

Q: I Have this throbbing internal pain on my lower right back what is it?
Its not just back pain cause it feels like something internal is working over time. Its right in the back almost over my , excuse my language, butt. I have had kidney stones before but this is soo different. Along with this pain i do get, what i like to call kidney shots, it feels like a kidney stone pain but lasts about 5-10 minutes several times throughout the day everyday. Any medical professional want to give me their opinion?

A: You may want to go get checked to see if you have a kidney infection. It’s kind of like having the stones, but the pain is worse, and it lasts longer. I have had a kidney infection before, as well as stones, and I have to admit the infection was much more painful. Go to the doc. and have them test your urine for it. Hope I helped a little bit, and get feeling better!

Q: What is causing my right lower back pain?
I been having constant pain in my lower back on the right side. What can be some causes? I am afraid to take tylenol in case it is my kidneys.
It’s been bothering me for a few days now.

A: I don’t know if your pain is caused by kidney stones, but here’s a link with info on back pain and kidney stones http://www.backandneckpainresources.com/category/back-pain/kidney-stones/ . You should really go see a doctor however.

Q: Recently, I have been having upper back pain right by my right shoulder blade?
Periodically, my upper back (right shoulder blade) has been having this cold, numb sensation. I have minor scoliosis, could this be a factor? I have not been to the doctor lately, and I do not know if my back has gotten worse. What are some ways I could prevent the feeling in my back?
Please answer. :-(

A: I have minor scoliosis and experience the same thing in the same place. My doctors have never suggested this as a reason although I will mention it next time I go in. I also have MS so I experience similar types of pain in other parts of my body from time to time. For me I think this is the cause. My doc said that it was from sitting for long periods of time at my job but I don’t really buy that.
For you I would say that it definately seems like a nerve pain. Perhaps you have a nerve that it being “hit” or “pinched” by your scoliosis or something else. My MS causes nerve pain but I am not suggesting that you have a nervous system disorder.
Regular pain relievers will not help. Massage and streching may. Try twisting your back when you stretch and reach out to your side.
I would mention this to your doctor since this has happened more than once, although it is probably nothing to be too alarmed about.

*I hate having pain in this spot because you cannot massage it yourself.*

Hope this helps some.

Q: 37wks pregnant with a constant pain in lower right back?
Woke up with a pain in my lower right back. The pain won’t go away and is there thru the fake contractions. Ice pack and tylenol don’t work. Is this just muscle pain or the start of real contractions? Heard that when you get contractions they go from the lower back to the front.

A: My contractions started in the back and like a wave to the front and middle of my belly. They came on like a wave, lasted a few seconds and then disappeared again

You should just put in a call to your doctors answering service or call center, just to be safe (ask questions)

Q: Right lower back pain that shoots down my leg?
I’ve been having a sharp pain in my right lower back recently and it shoots down my leg. It really hurts when I stand up or sit down. Now the reason I’m worried is because I’m only 15 and back pain isn’t suppose to be common in teenagers. I play water polo so i don’t know if that might be it or not.

Does anyone know what this is and how I can cure it?

A: It could be anything, nerve problem, muscle problem, kidneys or a number of other things…It is impossible to answer your question without knowing what the actual problem is. Ask your Doctor for a referral for a CT or MRI scan.
The wrong type of treatment or exercises can do more damage than good and you need to have your back properly diagnosed prior to ANY treatment.
Again you do need to have a CT / MRI scan or such done before allowing ANYONE to touch your back.

Get a professional opinion from the radiologist doing the scan in his report to your doctor and then go from there.

Q: Upper right back pain, hurts to breathe and cough?
I’ve been sick with a cold for a few days but today I’m in serious pain to the right of my spine and a little above the middle of my back. It hurts to breathe and cough and pretty much do anything. Help please :(

Q: Really bad lower right back pain at 23 weeks pregnant?
My lower back is hurting on the right side it just started today and it’s now starting to hurt all the way down my leg when i walk? Any help on what it is or what to do!?

A: Your joints are beginning to get lose you just need a break and take it easy when you feel the pain lay down on your side with a pillow inside your legs and rest walking makes it more painful

Q: What is causing my lower right side back pain?
Since early this morning I have been having pain in the lower right side of my back. Right above the hip. Then when I went to use the restroom after I went there was some blood. Then after that I went several times more and there was no blood. Anyone have any clue as to what this can be?

Q: What exercise can i do to help mid side back pain? or other help?
I have had Mid back pain close to my sides(most the time left) for years now(5-10?). After i have been on my feet for half hour or so.What can i do to help this? So fare i have got by using over the counter pain meds(advil ect) and a lower back brace when ever i had to be on my feet for long times. Going to a doctor isn’t a option as i have no insurance or money for that matter. Thank you for the help.

A: I can sympathise with this, I had lower back pain for a couple of years, went to a chiropracter, the doctor and nothing worked.

What I found was that it was because I had stopped exercising and spent alot of time sitting around in front of a computer (my first job after graduation).

So I would thoroughly reccommend swimming and yoga. Both really good for a sore back and really low intensity. You should only go easily at first though but do it regularly.

Once you have a bit of movement in there then move onto core strengthening exercises, i.e. crunches and lower back strengthening exercises. If you have a strong core muscle group it helps with your posture and reduces back pain.

Now I exercise almost everyday and have no back issues at all.

If it isnt a problem with your back and is actually your liver or kidneys or something (I guess a constant pain instead of the odd twinge when you move?) then go to a doctor now – it could be something serious and may get much worse.

Q: Easing the lower back/side pain from a kidney infection?
I have a kidney infection and am having trouble sleeping because the pain in my back/side is so bad. I’ve tried taking Tylenol but it’s not really working. Does anyone have any experience with ways to ease the pain?

Thanks.

A: I agree–a heating pad works so well. Avoid walking around or standing, that makes the pain worse. I think I slept on my stomach for about 3 months when I had a kidney infection, ugh, I feel for you!

Instead of Tylenol, you should take an anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or Aleve. This should help.

Q: What does it mean to have brown discharge with left side and back pain?
I have been having brown discharge, not spotting everytime i wipe, and it looks like there is tissue in it. and lower left side and back pain. I have been trying to get pregnant, but my doctor sent me for blood work and said that the pregnancy test was negative. What could this be? ive had the pain and discharge for almost a week now!
I know its not coming from my urethra, its from my vagina

A: You need an ultrasound.

Q: Endometriosis lower back pain on right side?
Anyone with endometriosis experience lower right side pain?
Seems worse in the mornings.
Its just above my hip, the pain is also in the abdomen in the same area except in the front.

Its like its a pain all the way through the abdomen and straight through to the back just above my hip.

(I have a laproscopy sceduled for next friday)

A: i have it on my right side as well

but the pain can vary in time and duration.

Sometimes it feels like shooting pain and sometimes it feels like I have no blood circulation.

I just had my 3rd lap last friday and my new doc said that what i was feeling was a result of the endo. I have to go get lupron treatments to take care of remnant stuff.

Q: Pregnant and having side and back pain for 2 weeks. Could it be my kidneys?
I have had a pain on my right side and on the right side of my back for 2 weeks now. I went to the ER and they checked my urine and blood. They said everything was normal. I have been to my Dr. twice and they checked my urine 3 times. They said all is well. I have also been having pain when I urinate. Only at the end. When I am laying down there is no pain. Only when moving.

A: it could be kidney stones, they are quite normal during pregnancy, but i am not a doc and i dont know your particular situation, but i had a baby two months ago and i know that pregnancy causes a lot of weird aches and pains, but try drinking more water to help flush out your system, and if it continues you may want to get a second opinion from a different doctor it always pays to be your own advocate for your health, i hope u feel better and congrats on the pregnancy :)

Q: back pain on right side only – is it bcz of bra strap?
I am 15wks preg and i have been noticing a pain in on my right side mid-back. If I untie the strap, i feel better, can this be bcz of the strap? I am planning on buyin extenders soon, but stilll what r ur thoughts?

A: I am also 15 weeks pregnant. I purchased nursing bras and I haven’t any MAJOR back pain since I purchased them. I get lower back pain when I’m in bed… But during the day when I have my bra on I barely get back pain…

Maybe try purchasing nursing bras?

Q: What are some possible causes of lower back and side pain?
I have pain in my lower back and sides. It hurts to be touched on both sides and I have constant pain there.

A: The SI joint is the problem. You need to do strengthening exercises to make the muscles stronger so the SI joint doesn’t go out of place. Does the pain run across your hip & down the outside of your thigh?

Do a search for lower back exercises. A chiropractor can help & also if they are a good one, can give you exercises to do.

Also, physical therapy, that helped me alot & they also give you so many exercises you can use all your life to keep your back in good shape.

Q: I am having stabbing side and back pains. The pain is really bad when I take deep breaths.?
The pain is on the left side of my back near my rib cage. I had the pain for a few days and it went away for about 3 weeks and now it is back. Can anyone tell me what this may be? I went to a Doctor and had an x-ray, he advised it may be a pulled muscle, but I don’t think.

A: Ok, so the same thing happend to me years ago. I was coughing a lot and I seriously thought I cracked a rib. Well, luckily i was dating my radiologists son so he explained to me what happen, probably better then what your doc did. Here goes:

What happend to me was I was coughing so much the intercostal muscles (between the ribs) started pulling away from my rib cage which causes a shooting pains in my back where my ribs were. I couldnt breath and coughing absolutely made me cry. I was put on codine and stayed in bed for about a week.

Q: Can anxiety cause back pain on just one side?
Ive had anxiety for years and have had lower right side back pain for 4 years.im 32 yr old female

A: A person can imagine pain if they are suffering with depression to be on the safe side see your GP.

Q: So i’m having lower and side back pain and my back has been cracking a lot and its really painful. what gives?
Is it something internally or stress… depression?
what?

A: Go see your doctor Jen. Internist for sure.

Q: My big stomach causes me back and side pain when I lay down. I exercised and i loss weight still have stomach.?
I have lost weight but my stomach is still the same size (big) it causes me back pain and when i lay down it causes me alot of pain. Should I consider a tummy tuck? but not sure if my insurance will pay for it.

A: ask your insurance company if they would cover you getting surgery to cut out some of your stomach and if they do consider trying that. that will lower your stomach size which then you will lose your back problems.

Q: Pain in right side of my back now has advanced to front of my body?
I have had back pain for 5 days and now it seems to be only on the right side of my back. But now the right side of my stomache below my ribs hurts pretty bad. I went to the doctor but he said its probably just a pulled muscle but I dont think so now that its hurting my side.

A: How does it hurt? You need to be more specific.. Could be appendicitis or sciatica (due to back problems). Google sciatica and if your symptoms match up then I really suggest going to the doctors to get some xrays.

Q: What to do when you have lower back pain on left side at 39 weeks pregnant?
I usually have a little bit of lower back pain. For the past couple hours my left side of my lower back has been in enough pain that its hard to walk. If anyone knows what this might be a sign of that would be great to know.

A: Could be labor.

Whenever I have back pain (I normally get it up in the middle left portion of my back) I have my husband stick his fist in there and rotate it a little. It hurts like heck while he’s doing it, but afterwards it feels like he released whatever was irritating my back.

Q: Why do I have this nagging left back pain?
I had a hysterectomy 2 weeks ago (my ovaries were left behind). I have experienced lower left back pain that sometimes radiates to the lower left side of my abdomen. I have run a low grade fever but nothing to exciting. The pain is constant and I cannot get comfortable! Any ideas?

A: Melissa:

I am trying to research this for you. Was going to email you – but cannot. Will ask my questions though here: Did you call the doctor yet? Was it only the uterus that was taken or was it the tubes and cervix as well? When you say, “low grade fever,” can you please give me a number? What did the doctor give you for pain?

I am continuing researching… will check back for your answers….

Q: I am slightly over wieght and have bad lower left back pain?
Okay i am 15 years old slightly overwieght and when i go up steps, down steps, sit down stand up or bend over i feel extreme jolts of pain going up my whole left leg and back, any ideas on what to do?

A: Sorry that you are in so much pain, I have been there with the lower back pain and leg issues and know it is hard to manage at times. You definitely need to see your doctor ASAP for proper diagnosis and treatment. From your description of symptoms, it sounds like you’ve developed sciatica but again your doctor is the best judge of what’s going on. In the meantime, try not to put too much pressure on your back or legs until you see the doctor. Hope you find relief soon…Good luck!

Q: Upper Left Back Pain After Slouching In Chair?
After being at the theater watching a movie.. I was slouching it was comfortable at the time but. At the end of the movie when getting up. I had a little bit of pain in my upper left back! Few hours later it has been hurting me really bad sharp pain taking my breathe away sometimes it was hurting that bad.. hurt when laying down could not get comfortable last night. Would be great with some answers on what you all think it could be. Thanks!

A: Hi, I’ve had similar pain all weekend after doing some cleaning, but i always slouch & give myself backache while gaming. I’ve been to the Drs this morning & he told me not to stay still but to do some gentle back exercises, like slowly leaning over from side to side, then lay on the floor on your back with knees bent up, feet flat on floor, keeping knees together gently roll your knees from side to side. Maybe worth looking up more gentle back exercises on the net.

Q: What is this new stabbing pain in the middle upper left side of my back?
I have suffered from chronic back pain for three years now. I am 31, not overweight, and did not have an injury! I had disc replacement surgury on L4-5 about a year and a half ago with no success. Discography shows that the L5-S1 is not healthy and may be the cause of continued pain. In the past few months I have developed left leg pain and numbness with very bad hip pain as well. This stabbing in my left side (on the back) has just happened and is just aweful when I wake up in the morning. No position helps! Is this a muscle? I can locate it straight away with my left hand reaching back and it hurts to the touch. Any ideas?

A: sounds like a pinched nerve, sciatica.

Q: why do i have severe left abdominal and left back pain and hurts when breathign?
I have no clue how I have this. i woke up today and now i have this and urinating more than i was. maybe because of nerves, but i cant even move hardly. it hurts my temp is 99.7. i dont feel sick, just lot of pain and fatigue.

A: that sounds like a problem with your kidneys, they are located towards your back, filter blood to produce urine..(pee) and maybe you have an infection (the high temp) call the doctor

Q: Can Food poisining cause lower left back pain and vomiting?
My hubby had fish and chips for lunch today. Now he’s in terrible pain with dry heaves.

A: =(
That’s either his kidney or his intestines.
Sounds like food poisoning.
Try the doctor.

Soda might help the tummy.

Q: Lower left back pain after running hurdles?
I do 7-flight hurdles and shuttle hurdle relay. After I run them, it hurts really badly when I step on the ground with my left foot. I have to limp. The next day it is usually normal again, or at least better than before. I go over hurdles with my right foot.

A: Since you are right leg lead, and your left leg or foot hurts, it is probably a muscle strain, because you are not flexible enough to run the hurdles.
You can try to stretch and use some massage or therapy to get your muscles loose so you don’t have the pain.
Ice after running can help.

Q: why do i have left severe Abdominal pain along with left back pain?
I have no clue how I have this. i woke up today and now i have this and urinating more than i was. maybe because of nerves, but i cant even move hardly. it hurts my temp is 99.7. i dont feel sick, just lot of pain and fatigue.

A: could be a urinary track infection

Q: I get lower left back pain just from standing. It’s better once I sit or lay down. What could it be?
It started about a week and a half ago. I can’t just stand around and do nothing or it hurts. Like at work for example. I can’t be in front at all, cause all you do is stand there. In back making food though, I’m moving around and it doesn’t hurt. It also hurts to put weight on it. I really do not know what it could be and it’s only in the lower left part of my back.

A: You really need to see your doctor. It sounds like a musculoskeletal problem (arthritis or other anomaly of the spine, back spasm secondary to another condition, etc.). It could even be a urinary tract infection.

Pain is a symptom of an underlying condition that often needs professional treatment. Don’t delay. What may be a minor irritation one day can become much worse over time.

Q: where can I get information on the cause of lower left back pain?
I recently strained my back and am experiencing a different pain other than the usual sore muscle pain

Q: Very bad pain in upper left back,in a specific area, next to spine.I am 32 wks pregnant.I am worried about this?
The pain is so bad. I cannot even sit up properly. It started last month. When my husband presses or puts a muscle balm on it I can pinpoint exactly where it is. I do have some overall back pain as well but am worried what this particular pain is.
I have cervical spondylis as well on the left side of my neck, could this be related?
I am thinking about so many bad things that this could be..Please help

A: I am so sorry to tell you this, but there’s nothing you can do. I had the same pain from about 5 months on with my first. and i have it now with #2, and I know how excruciating it can be!! Tylenol, heating pad, rest, and a good massage. Find a massage therapist in your area who is certified to work on pregnant people. You can talk to your doctor-they may send you to physical therapy, and depending on you and your doctor medication may be an option. There are muscle relaxers and pain treatments safe for pregnancy but some doctors won’t prescribe anything. Good luck, I know how awful that pain is!

Q: 30 weeks pregnant, lower left back pain. does not feel like a nerve pain. what should i do?

A: I would suggest you talk to your obgyn or midwife sooner than later about this pain you are experiencing.
