Q: neck pain?
I’m 32 yrs old and I have been having neck pain on the left side of my neck now for about 2 weeks. The pain is really bad at times. If I tilt my head to the left I feel like I have to struggle to get it very far and it causes some added pain. If I tilt my head to the right it feels like it goes further alot easier with less pain. It causes the top of my left shoulder to hurt at times. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this is or if I need to see a Dr.

A: Definately go to an orthopedic doctor. That is who you will have to find anyways. It sounds like you could have something going on with a disc or actually with your shoulder. You could have a small lesion or tear in your shoulder too. The only way to get a definitive diagnosis is to go see the doctor and get an xray and possibly an MRI. Take ibuprofen for now as that will help with any inflammation caused in the injury. Make that apt. and good luck!!

Q: Neck Pain?
I have an odd neck pain, its in my front neck, unlike most neck pains. I dont have any chest pain, or shoulder/back pain, or numbness or anything like that. I just get this occasional, sudden, and very painful kink in my neck, on both sides of my throat and wind pipe.. does anyone have any idea whats causing this? It generally happens when i lay down, or slouch. but its happend while standing too. but it lasts for 5-30seconds then goes away. Any Ideas?

A: A doctor would want to check your arteries in your neck from your heart. A sign of heart disease, another sign is your esophagus, stomach problems. A hytal hernia. Theres various other things it could be but, I would check with my doctor, the heart could be the problem and you’d want that checked right away.

Q: Neck pain?
I have a really bad pain in my neck. I woke up 3 days ago and i was in pain and it hasn’t gone since anyone have any suggestions on what it is or how to get rid of it?Thanx!

A: If you haven’t injured the area, it may be simply muscle tension/stress. Ibuprofen works well for pain and inflammation. Heating pad, or rice socks will generate circulation, helping heal the muscles. Valerian works well for muscle tension/strain, take as directed. Purchase a foam cervical collar to wear at home after work. It will help support your head and give your neck time to heal. They cost about 20bucks.

Q: nEcK pAiN!!!!!!!?
if i turn my head or tilt it towards the left a sharp pain shoots up the left side of my neck and radiates through my shoulder….At first i could moove my head off my right shoulder but now i can sorta go to maybe a 45 degree angle to the left of straight forword but this is after like 9 hours
I had a soccer game and headed this one ball that was really up high but……i also slept in a weird position

A: There are two possible answers for this problem. One is that you pulled one of the neck muscles. Two, this one is the more likely based on the information that was given. You have injured a facet joint in your neck. While this sounds serious it will heal without too much of a problem if you treat it correctly. First off if there is no improvement in about two days go to a doctor or a physical therapist. If your state has direct access then you can go to a therapist without a referral. If not then see your doctor for a referral. For immediate treatment use ice on the area for fifteen to twenty minutes every hour. This will help reduce the pain, spasm, and swelling that has or is taking place. You could also use a soft cervical collar during the day when your neck feels tired. Also use it at night when you sleep. You can get one at a local pharmacy or medical supply house. If there is none around you can take a hand towel and fold it length wise into thirds. Secure it around your neck with tape or a safety pin. Make sure that it is not too tight but just snug enough to give support. When the pain starts to decrease you may lie on the floor and use a rolling pin under your neck. Just lie on it for a while until your neck relaxes and then gently push the rolling pin along the floor towards your head and hold it there for a few seconds up to a minute or two. Longer if you are able but not at first or the neck might rebound into more pain. This is a gentle form of traction that should help relieve some of the spasms and pain. Turn your head as much as possible but only in ways that don’t generate pain. Lastly my best suggestion to you is to see a physical therapist who will work on the neck to break up the spasms, work on mobility, decrease pain, and strengthen the neck. The last part is particularly important for it will strengthen the area and reduce the possibility of having another episode. They sometimes will happen with the smallest movement if not treated correctly. Remember no heat just ice until there is no more pain!

Q: When does neck and back pain start to occur during pregnancy?
When does the actual neck and back pain usually occur? I’m almost a month pregnant and I woke up this morning experiencing the worst back of my neck and back pain! I’m experiencing stiffness and sharp pains everytime I bend my head neck or back forward, even when I’m sitting down. Has any woman experienced this kind of back pain? When does back and neck pain usually start during pregnancy?

A: It could just be stress for you or you could have pulled a muscle.

Since you are only a month pregnant, I wouldn’t think that the neck and back pain was from pregnancy.

A cause for neck and back pain is because of the increase in hormones which causes a shift in joints and can loosen ligaments which could cause posture to change and a less support for your back.

Another reason is once you become bigger and actually have a pretty big belly, your center of gravity will change and this causes a different posture that your body isn’t used to., which over time will cause pain. Also when the baby becomes bigger and you start to gain more weight, your back has to support more weight in a different area than it’s used to. Ever carry a heavy back pack around all day and your back begins to hurt? It’s like that, only in your belly.

You can start to help symptoms of this by using pillows between your legs to even out your back while you are sleeping. There are also certain pregnancy pillows that are made specifically for pregnant women.

I started feeling back pain around 20 weeks. I’m also very small built and very short, and carrying a baby and baby weight for me was a struggle. You’ll start feeling pain once you put on more baby weight and your belly gets bigger, but it can all depend on your build.

Good luck to you!

Q: What causes throbbing pain that originates in neck but shoots into head and eye?
I have a sharp pain in my neck that seems to “shoot” into my head. It’s like a mixture between a sinus headache and neck pain, but only on the right side of my head.

I have been in pain for more than 2 weeks. I thought it would go away, but I don’t even know what kind of doctor to go to.

A: It could be a tension headache, but the neck pain worries me.
I’ll give you some warning signs to look for:
Pain behind the eye
Dilated pupils
Behavior changes
Inability to focus
What you could classify as the “worst headache of your life”
These are symptoms of a ruptured cerebral aneurysm, which is extremely life-threatening.
An aneurysm that has not ruptured can cause pain, slurred speech, confusion, certain stroke symptoms…
If this pain has been going on for two weeks, I would definitely go to the emergency room to get a CT scan.
Headaches can be benign, or they can be killers.
You have what is characterized as a secondary headache, meaning that it may be organic in origin.

Q: How long until my neck pain goes away while seeing a chiropractor?
I’ve been going to a chiropractor for 9 weeks now, going twice a week. I started out with severe neck and shoulder pain. The pain has decreased drastically, but still have some pain. My mid back is extremely tight and not adjusting when I go. My dr. says neck and shoulder pain take longer to fix, but how long will I continue to have pain?
Ooops, I just read that says 9 weeks, I meant to type 3 weeks.

A: I’ve worked in the chiropractic field for 10+ years.

You should ask him if he’s in favor of placing a hot pack on your mid back for 10+ minutes before he adjusts you. This will help relax your mid back muscles and he should be able to get some movement.

As for how long it will take to “fix” – each patient is different as is each injury. But be prepared to continue with a “maintenance program” even after the pain goes away. Most Chiropractors like to keep you under their care for a minimum of 12 months.

I wish you a speedy recovery soon!

Q: How to relieve neck pain at the very top/back of the neck?
Not a muscle kind of pain. Dead center of the back of my neck, more like the bottom/back of my head. Feels like a tension pain, only nothing stressful going on, plus it’s been going on for a week. Advil alleviates it but then comes right back.
I can’t find my advil :/
I DID find two lego guys, a red crayon and the remains of a pochahontas sticker.

A: Yeah, I’m a doctor too. I find that massaging my neck in circular motions really helps alleviate the tension in my neck.

Q: How can i alleviate my neck pain?
I went rock climbing yesterday and I’ve had this pain on the right side of my neck. It only hurts when i lean my head to the right though. I really need to get rid of this problem because it hurts too much to go climbing. My dad showed my some neck exercises but the pain comes back after a couple minutes. If anyone knows some neck exercises or home remedies or something for this i would greatly appreciated if you helped.

A: Listen to your Dad you should be fine . You may not be use to this a strenuous exercise .It get better after awhile.

Q: What are some ways to relieve neck pain?
I didn’t wake up with the neck pain, as a matter of fact it didn’t start hurting until a couple hours later. When I turn my head to the right, or tilt my head upwards the pain is excruciating in the right side/shoulder area. When turn to the left or look down it doesn’t hurt as much if at all. I tried icy hot with not much relief, and if I try to stretch it becomes to unbearable. I can’t go to a doctor because I no longer have insurance. Any home remedies somebody can share?

A: I suggest you should go to the hospital’s department of rehabilitation.I think your neck pain is likely to fracture from your symptoms.

Q: What can you do to get rid of neck pain due to playing a video game?
I played maybe 3 hours of Halo last night. Midway through playing, I lowered the seat because I got a bit uncomfortable. I think that’s why it hurts, because I had to look up at a screen more.

I went to sleep hoping I’d feel all better the next day, but no, the pain is still there when I have my neck in certain positions. I can straigthen my neck with a bit of pain, but I can’t seem to arch it back more then that.

Anybody go through this before?
Good to know I’m no alone. And for your information I was playing Halo, the original. I don’t usually play video games (because I’d probably get addicted), but I saw it for 20 bucks and I do have a new graphics card I wanted to test out.

A: It’s a common enough problem with people who work at desk jobs- Or who play video games a lot.

For now, you’ll want to take aspirin and do gentle stretches with your neck, and keep a rolled-up warm towel around it to help your neck muscles relax.

This will be hard for you- but afterwards, you’ll have to make sure not to play so long. And to have the monitor at a height that is right for you, when you do play.

Good luck!

Q: What causes a neck pain to get worse as the day goes on?
I had a stiff neck this morning when I woke up, but about an hour ago my neck hurt so badly I could barely turn my head. Why all of a sudden would the pain change and become more intense?

A: Could be number of things, from pulled muscle, to tension headache, or a more serious condition, including a pinched nerve. You may want to consider seeing a Chiropractor. I have worked for Chiros since ‘98 and get adjusted regularly. HUGE improvement with headaches and neck pain.

Q: What is the best product to relieve neck pain?
I have a really bad neck pain along with my shoulders that have been hurting me for a long time. And also my joints, not to mention the hips and my right thigh. I’m in big pain! What’s the best medicine to use? Hopefully not a temporary relief ’cause applying ice does that a little. Thanks.

A: I have a few suggestions:

1- use a cervical support pillow
2- ice your neck
3- do some muscle work using a natural pain relief gel like biofreeze
4- stretch your neck using a traction unit
5- do neck stretches
6- see a chiropractor to make sure your spine is aligned properly
7- Improve your Neck Posture

All of these should be done over a long period of time. They will make a big difference.

Q: What is the best way to help neck pain, especially at night when sleeping?
I’ve been having a lot of pain in my neck and was wondering the best way to help it at night when I’m sleeping. I sleep on my side or stomach mostly. I am unable to sleep on my back. I thought about buying one of those neck pillows, but I’m not sure I’d be comfortable. Any recommendations? Also, I don’t want to spend a fortune!
I went to the chiropractor today. I will get my x-ray results Tuesday, however, I would like a cheaper alternative that I can do on my own.

A: I find that a heating pad right before you go to sleep helps–and feels really good. Just don’t fall asleep with it on.

Q: How can I get rid of neck and upper back pain?
I’m 16 years old and this year I have neck and back pain almost every day after school. I think it’s my posture, I try to stand up straight but it’s hard for me. I’m usually slouched over in my desk too. Usually I take advil, but I’m wondering if it’s normal for me to have neck pain at my age. And how can I stop getting it? Thank you!

A: Lola,
It’s not normal to have neck pain at your age. I would have your parents take you to the chiropractor. Also you should try this pillow, it will help: http://www.arc4life.com/site/615058/product/LinearGravityPillow

Q: What kind of doctor do I see for neck/back pain?
Major back/neck pain and vertigo. Have seen chiropractor, naturopath. What type of conventional doctor do I see for this? Orthopedic? ENT? Thanks!

A: Orthopedic surgeon or “orthopod.”
I’ve found it to be best to use both the western and the alternative approaches for chronic muskuloskeletal pain.

Q: What to do about neck/back pain because of a large chest?
I am a 32 DD and sometimes my neck/back hurts…I think partly because of my disproportionate figure and large chest. Are there any exercises I can do that will help me strengthen my back/neck and alleviate the pain?

A: I completley understand, I’m a 30F. Doing pec exercises helps tighten the muscle beneath the breasts which in the long run will help. Also getting professionally fitted for a bra (I’m not talking getting measured at victoria secret) when you have the right bra it can take alot of weight off your back and shoulders. A breast reduction is a last option type thing i would say. Good luck, and talk to your doctor.

Q: I recently became vegetarian and I get frequent back and neck pain?
My neck’s hurting as I write this. I became vegetarian about 4 months ago and the back+neck pain started around then. Are these two connected? I also experience bloating. How to solve this?

A: It must be from leaning over the salad bar..LOL…just kidding. The 2 aren’t related.

Kim…have you been “imbibing”? You’re typing like a flexi…LOL

Q: What should I do about back/neck pain?
I’m a thirteen year old female and I have been having really bad back pains. Usually in my upper back and often in my neck, too. My very top vertebrate tend to hurt a lot. Occasionally, my lower and middle back will hurt, but not very often. This has been happening on and off for about a month and a half now. It hurts to twist my neck around, bend down, bend my neck down, and twist my back around. Sometimes it just hurts sitting there, though.
Any suggestions as to what it is and what I should do?

A: Regardless of what happened, you should go to the doctor as soon as you can. If you hurt yourself due to a bad fall the pain could be caused either by a something small like bruising or something more serious like a slipped disc. If this is the case, it’s good to treat it now so you don’t cause more damage that could be harder to treat down the line.

Also you could try to use magnetic jewelry to help relieve pain. I have pains in my back and arms from playing baseball. To help bring some relief I started wearing a magnetic bracelet and necklace. They do bring me a lot of relief, so they may be worth a try. http://acemagnetics.com/

I hope this helps and I hope whatever you decide to do brings you some form of relief.

Q: Any suggestions for a good exercise DVD for neck and back pain?
I have been having chronic neck pain (disk degeneration) and recent back pain (disk) and before seeking out a physical therapist and overloading on Advil, I wanted to try an exercise DVD for back and neck pain. Anyone know of any effective ones? PLEASE, THIS IS A REAL QUESTION, SO ONLY SERIOUS ANSWERS…..

A: Hello,

There’s a great article on back pain exercises here:http://www.backandneckpainresources.com/Reasons%20Your%20Back%20Pain%20Exercises%20Don’t%20Work%20and%20What%20You%20Can%20Do%20About%20It.html

In the article, you’ll learn why most back pain exercises don’t work and what you can do about it.

Pain is simply a warning sign that something is wrong and needs to be addressed. I would use caution against taking Advil because simply taking medication to hide the pain is like shutting off the fire alarm in a burning building. You’ve got to treat the problem to offset any additional challenges that may manifest itself from your current condition(s).

Believe it or not, most neck and back pain relief can be found using a natural and multifaceted approach in nutrition, physical and emotional healing – supporting your body’s natural ability to heal for pain-free living. A simple change in the way that you eat, postural re-balancing and even using a simple emotional freedom technique can work wonders!

Hope this helps!

To your great health,
Charlie

Q: I am suffering from shoulder/upper back/neck pain. How have other people over come this problem ?
I am suffering from shoulder/upper back/neck pain. Basically bad frontal/head/neck posture. I am been seeing a chiropractor for 3 months and doing stretchers. Without much relief. I was wondering if there a better way.
How have other people overcome this problem ?

A: Firstly, go to your doctor and ask him to get you X-rayed. You could have a disintegrated disc that is pressing on a nerve or maybe a slipped disc. You cannot speculate until you have had the X-ray so, as I said…..get an X-ray, okies.

Q: How do i find a good Physical Therapist for neck and back pain in my area?
I have neck pain and some back pain so my doctor referred me to a physical theripist, he didn’t give me any suggestions just said to go to whichever is closest to where i live. What should i be looking for in a good physical theripist? Also I’m kinda scared since i’ve never been to one before. What happens there?

A: I would highly recommend someone with a certification in mechanical diagnosis and therapy. Go to http://www.mckenziemdt.org . If no one is available, I would ask to see someone who has a manual therapy certification. These are some of the most scientifically validated forms of treatment in PT…depending on the “type” of back pain you have.

Q: Why do I feel like I never get enough sleep, need to stretch all the time, have back pain, neck pain?
I sleep about the normal amount for an adult, Grant it I don’t always get the sleep I should be getting. I am a normally stressed out person but I don’t feel like my pain is normal. I am seventeen and my upper back through my shoulders hurts ALL OF THE TIME, my head hurts often, my legs ache, I have neck pain, and the most annoying symptom is I feel like I need stretched all of the time.

A: Maybe see a phsyio or chiropractor about your back. to make sure there’s nothing out of place.

Maybe upgrade your pillow -this could be the source of your pain.

I get neck and back pain, this was from work I did at the time and also car accidents – When my pain flares up I use a heat pack to loosen my muscles. And Yoga also helped me strengthen my inner core. And when it’s too bad, I see a chiropractor (I get a massage there too)

Q: Can an osteopath really solve the upper back/ neck pain which results in tension headache?
I’ve been visiting a recommended and highly qualified osteopath for the last year in order to get help with re-occurring pain which rises from in between my shoulder blades, into the back of my neck and shoulders, and causes me to experience dull but persistant headaches.

Although the visits to the osteopath do bring some relief, it is only temporary and they haven’t solved the problem.
I am now wondering whether there is any point in continuing these visits, as the problem seems to be muscular, probably brought on by some kind of tension, and not of musculo-skeletal nature.

Is there anything else in the field of the ‘alternative’ medicine that some of you have perhaps found useful when experiencing this, or similar?

Thank you for your time:)

Btw, I do practice Pilates on a regular basis and am on a skinny side.
Thank you all very much for your advice.
I wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful 2007.

A: Since you say visits to Chiropractors and Osteopaths fix the problem temporarily, you probably need to look at what you are doing between visits. If your problems are not caused by some sort of neurological or spinal problem, then its very likely that you are doing something to cause the problem, or at least failing to do what’s needed to prevent the problem from reoccurring. It sounds a lot like you could have a habit of craning your neck, hunching your back, or maybe sleeping in an awkward position. These types of things can be turned around by removing the cause and getting things back on track by stretching. If the pain is caused by spasms, you might find some relief by taking a magnesium supplement several time per day. I found this website to be helpful:

Q: what’s the best way to posistion your pc monitor to avoid neck / back pain?
I have moved it all kinds of ways, higher lower and different angles. the monitor is up a bit higher. it sets on top of a small printer stand about 4-6 inches at the most but I am able to elevate my chair so I am viewing the center of the monitor but still suffer neck pain.

A: Rule of thumb is the lower 1/3 of the monitor should be at eye level so that your neck is in slight extension,

Q: Alternatives to Chiropratic for chronic upper back and neck pain?
I’ve had upper back (shoulder) pain for a few years now (I’m 25) – and recently developed neck pain. Going to the chiropractor does hlpe alleviate the pain, but it does not go away completely. And I’m worried the more I go to the choripractor, the more I will need it.

I’ve tried sports therapy, osteopathy, acupuncture, chinese medicine ball, nothing has worked as good as chiropractic, but I would like an alternative.

A: You could try a TINs unit, which electronically blocks the pain signals that your body sends to your brain. You wear it on your hip like a cell phone, there are pads you attach to your body, where the pain bothers you.
I am on pain meds. They work great…BUT are practically impossible to quit on your own once you begin them. I don’t necessarily recommend THAT path.
Do you know WHY the pain is there? Have you had an MRI, X-rays? Once the reason is revealed, maybe your condition will be easier to treat.

Be well.

Q: I have really poor posture and suffer from back and neck pain any tips to improve it?
My head tends to jut forward and I suffer from low back pain. Please don’t say chiropractor or yoga/pilates. I’m looking for exercises and tips.

A: Because it’s hard to break old habits, here’s a tip on how to train yourself to stand more erect while keeping your shoulders held back.

1. Stand in a corner with your feet around 2 feet from the wall, distance will depend on your size.
2. Place your palms, at shoulder height, flat against opposite walls.
3. Slowly lean in toward the point where the walls meet.
4. Repeat 10 times once a day.

I was given this exercise when I was having a lot of back pain, much of which was caused by bad sitting posture.

Not only does your day time posture affect your neck and back, but your sleeping posture does, as well. Before you fall off to sleep try to straighten out your upper body, the same way you would if sitting or standing. Training yourself to sleep like this can make a big change.

Because of my back pain issues, I’m in the process of putting together a website that is all about back exercise and creating pain relieving approaches to your daily activity. You may find some useful back and neck stretches there.

Q: help for horrible back and neck pain after birth of 3rd child?
delivered 9lb 6 ounce baby nov 6th, i am little so it was a fast but hard delivery (no medication) ever since i came home i have real bad lower back pain that radiates into my neck, i’ve got motrin but it doesn’t work, any thoughts?

A: For your neck, try a heating pad or a take a washcloth, get it damp with water, microwave it for 30 seconds to a minute, then lay on the back of your neck. Test it with your hands first to make sure it’s not too hot. This should atleast give you some temporary relief!

Q: Neck sore?
I had a cold about 2 weeks ago and I still have the congested cough. Yesterday,I woke up with my neck sore under my left ear down my neck. I woke up this morning and it is more sore. It is starting to hurt now under my right ear. I don’t have a fever or sore throat. I looked in my throat and I have this white-yellowish patch and it is has red lines but does not hurt. Can you have strep throat without a sore throat? Has this happened to anyone else?

A: Look, if there is anything wrong with your body and you don’t know what it is, I suggest one of these two options for anytime this happens:

1. Go to http://www.webmd.com. They can help you identify what is happening to you whatever the problem is. They’ll give you more detailed answers than what you’d normally see here.

2. Go to a doctor if you can’t find what you’re looking for on WebMD or if you know whatever is happening to you is serious. This is the best option because they’ll give you a full diagnosis and they can give you a prescription for the drugs you need.

Q: Why are my shoulders & neck sore the morning after i drink?
It seems like everytime i drink a lot of alcohol, my neck & shoulders are really sore the morning after. Does this happen to anyone else & does anyone know why it happens?

A: Likely it is just dehydration, also a main cause of a hangover. Drink water every other drink and you shouldn’t have that problem.

Q: Sore gums on upper back left side of mouth and left side of neck sore too?
My gums near the left side of my upper wisdom tooth feel swollen and sore for the past two days and just today i noticed pain when pressing below my left jaw on my neck.
Ca this be anything serious?

A: It’s probably not serious, but requires some action. It sounds like you have a minor gum infection that is affecting the lymph nodes on the same side. The home remedy is to rinse with warm salt water several times a day and to take advil as needed. If it hasn’t markedly improve in 7 days, then go in to see the dentist

Q: Why do I get a sore neck when I sit or lie in a draught?
I have been sleeping near an open window and I wake up with a stiff and sore neck. Can anyone explain the science – please.

A: I don’t think there is an association with the wind flow or temperature or anythin like that. You do want to ensure that you have the same body and neck position out in the other room as you do in your bed (where you do not wake up with a neck ache), the pillow is the same etc, good luck

Q: What is the fastest way to get rid of a sore neck?
I woke up this morning and i had a terrible pain in my neck and i knew it was from sleeping on it wrong. I would really like to know what the fastest and best way is to get rid of a sore neck is. I have a soccer game tomorrow and would like to know as soon as possible. Thank You

A: I would take some Ibuprofen or Naproxen for the pain.
You need to stretch your shoulder and neck. Try rotating your shoulders backward and forward a few times. Also, tilt your head from shoulder to shoulder and forward to your chest and back a few times, do all these slowly.
Applying moist heat will help a lot, too.
Good luck!

Q: What is the best pillow type to support neck and to stop me getting a sore neck?
Im sick of getting a sore neck coz they are too soft and dont support my neck, they are filled with polyester fibre, any suggestions as to which pillows are best to support neck and are comfortable?

A: Use what is called butterfly type pillow which has good support for the neck. Or put a small wooden plank under the normal pillow to provide a firm support.

Q: What helps a sore neck and shoulders while sitting at a desk & when lying in bed?
I have had probs with my back & Neck for years, i’ve seen a pysiotherapist comes right for a while then goes back to being sore.
What can i do when it’s sore while sitting at my desk @ work
and when i’m lying in bed
I have been to a chiropractor, she made it worse so did the physio, i have been using herbal anti-flamme to help but i can’t keep on using all day

A: The problem with Physios, osteos, chrios etc is they don’t empower self healing and maintainence, they don’t tend to look to indepthly at common movement/activity patterns

To be Continued.

People Usually pay me for this but hey

Lie on a firm surface. with your knees bent and feet flat.

Raise your arms above your head and stretch to the roof.

Do little circles in each direction.
Now take your arms through full Circumductions. (big circels with your wrist just a centremetre from the floor

Then put your elbows out to the sides and let your hands ballance above them with your elbow bent at 90 degrees.

Try to find the balance point where you no longer have to hold them up, and breath deep breaths holding your lungs open.

You’ll feel all sorts of little spasm or adjustive movements in your shoulder blades, persist at this.

You can then also try lacing your fingers behind your neck and make flapping motions whilst both pushing your fingers together and your elbows out to the side.

Also knee pushups or place your arms on doorway lean forward with arms bent and push a little loading your pectorals triceps, anterior deltoids, and abdominals. This is good.
You can also do the revers but this action is easier using either end of a rope hung over a tree branch or ceiling beam.

Good luck

Repeat, letme know how it goes.

Q: What’s he best way to treat stress-induced sore neck and shoulders?
I had very sore shoulders (below the shoulder blade) today. Had a massage and now my neck and my shoulders hurt a lot when I turn my head or put it forward to stand up. I’m using a heating pad now, but I wonder what other options there might be.

A: I had issues with pain after I had a massage the very first time and later discovered that part of that pain was because my body wasn’t used to the massages yet. I also learned that it’s important to drink a lot of water afterward to help rid the body of the toxins that just got built up during the massage. With my first massage I didn’t drink a lot of water afterward and that added to my pain as well as caused a urine test at one of my other doctors to show albumin (a chemical that relates to our liver) in the sample.

Something else I did for the neck and shoulder area (still do because of my fibro at times) is apply hot water to the area thru the shower.

I would also recommend getting in touch with the massage therapist to see what other suggestions they might have to help ease this pain.

Q: Is it normal to have a sore neck when you have a cold?
If so, how long is it before the sore neck goes away?

A: It can happen – I don’t know why but it’s happened to me a couple of comes (when recovering from a cold). My doc gave me a sheet of neck exercises to do – several times a day. It took about 5 – 6 days to fully recover. The exercises instantly provided some relief though.

Apparently it’s the combination of a cold & some sort of physical exercise, or strain that does it (in my case lifting weights – but it doesn’t have to be that strenuous to set it off). Happens to a few people.

Q: Can pregnancy cause me to have a sore neck?
No matter how i lay, my neck and the back of my head are always sore the next day. I am only 13 weeks along, so I wouldn’t think that my spine would be causing things to be out of whack, but I don’t know what else it could be.

A: if can definitley cause you to have a sore neck and back of the head. I was about that far along when I started having pain…I called my doctor and got a Physical Therapy referral….you would not believe the difference!! even though you may not feel it, your body is getting ready for the baby and pulling on your spine…it tightens EVERYTHING up….all the way up to your neck….I got massages in PT and she loosened up all my vertebrae and then up my neck and it worked WONDERS!!! I’d talk to your doc…some PT could help for sure….haha i know it sounds funny…but I think im my PT’s biggest fan..shes helped so much! Just be careful who you go to though, make sure you go to one who specializes in pregnancy.

Q: My neck and back are sore to the touch after steroid treatment for bronchitis. What could this be?
I got bronchitis and was given methylprednisolone and now my upper back and neck are sore to the touch. Can anyone help?

A: I really think you need to call your doc’s office and ask the nurse. You could also call the pharmacy and ask a pharmacist. The reason I tell you this is b/c muscle pain & weakness and tendon & bone pain are both signs of severe side effects of medicinal steroids. Just thought you needed to know that b/c it could be something that needs medical attention. Also, you could be sore from coughing. If you coughed a lot during your stint w/ bronchitas, you will be extremely sore and uncomfortable in many areas, such as, chest, neck, throat, upper back, neck, etc. My guess is that is probably the case, but you need to run it by a nurse/pharmacist. Hope this helps, and I hope you are well soon!

Q: What’s the best way to help a terribly sore neck?
My neck has been sore for days now, and I don’t know what to do about it. I’ve had heat on it, until tonight when my pilates instructor said to not use heat and ice it instead. The ice feels good, but it still hurts like hell. What can I do to help it?

Thanks.
I think a lot of the soreness has to do with stress and putting strain on it during working out, which I’m trying to work on.

A: stay with the heat
i have just recovered from the chiro from hell a few mths ago
ice is only used for swelling, keep the heat on it , take pain relief tablets and let it rest

Q: What’s causing my headaches & sore neck after running?
I just started a running program in an effort to lose weight and be healthy. I started running outside and I have found that those days, I get a bad headache and sore neck after running. It stays with me all day until I go to sleep. Any advice or suggestions on what causes it or how to get rid of it?

A: I’ve heard that a Budd Chiari malformation type 1 can cause this. Ask your doctor about it.

Q: During my ab workout i have a sore neck?
I always put tension in my neck during my ab workout and it gets really sore. Anyone got tips on how to stop the tension?

A: Use only your abs. You are probably doing it wrong.

Q: Can roller skating cause a sore neck?
I went roller skating and now I have a sore neck. My sister does not believe that roller skating caused my sore neck. I tend to disagree with her because that is the only thing that I did differently in my normal routine. What say ye?
Yes, I did fall once on my behind. I also skated for about 2 hours. I have not skated in years.

A: sure…if you were tensing up the muscles in your neck/shoulders…maybe in an attempt to concentrate/keep your balance.

Q: What could cause pain that starts under the chin on left side of neck and goes up to ear and becomes headache?
With pain on bending over, or turning neck, headache on left side only lasting three days only dulled a little by tylenol. I am on antibiotics for another infection, so doesn’t seem to be from sinuses, or from tooth problems. Pain all night and on arising in the morning. Possible swollen lymph on that side?

A: you might have a clogged salivary gland.
A simple solution is biting into a lemon or something extremely sour. It will cause your salivary glands to flood and this sometimes removes the little crystal that has formed there. If clogged long enough you can form a crystal in there that will have to be removed by surgery as it becomes to large to exit through the opening there. It is almost like a kidney stone.
Try the lemon first and maybe a couple times to see if that helps.

Q: What causes this in the Septra warnings? “confusion, persistent headache, neck stiffness, seizures.”?
What is actually going on when this happens?
Seek immediate medical attention if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: confusion, persistent headache, neck stiffness, seizures.

A: You are having a serious allergic reaction that is showing itself in neurological effects, the Septra is interfering with your normal brain chemistry.

Q: I hit my head yesterday, have a recurring headache and neck pain?
I hit my head yesterday lunchtime, I don’t think I hit it that hard, although it hurt at the time and I developed a headache straight away. I took some paracetamol that evening which took away the pain after a while.

The headache didn’t come back until this evening and I also have developed an aching pain in my neck and shoulders too.

Any ideas for whether I should get this checked out/how serious it could be?
I have taken paracetamol this evening but it has not taken away my headache as it did last night.

A: I think you should either go to A and E or see your GP as soon as you can.

Q: Pea size lump on neck and constant headache?
I recently discovered a pea size lump on the left side of my neck – near my shoulder and above the collar bone. Normally I wouldn’t think anything of it, but it’s painful to the touch and when I stretch my neck to the side. I’ve also had a constant, dull headache/sore neck that will not go away.

Any thoughts as to what it could be and what I should do? I’m just sick of waking up to a constant headache and tender neck!

A: Go to a doctor right away.

Q: What can cause your neck to spontaneously bruise along with stiffness and migraine headache?
I have been slowly developing bruises along both sides of my neck that are dark in colour. Before they developed, I had neck pain accompanied with a debilitating migraine and tension headache combination. My neck often feels as though it is pulling right where the bruises are. I have not been in a car accident, have not fallen, or had any kind of trauma.

A: Bruising is caused by the bursting of small blood vessels. Maybe you rubbed your neck too hard. You need to be evaluated by a doctor. It may be something as simple as muscle strain, but you need to be diagnosed by a professional.

Q: Is it normal to have a headache and stiff neck a few days after having a temperature of 102?
Friday night, I noticed that I’d begun to develop a low grade fever. By Saturday evening, I saw the fever rise to 102.3, accompanied by the usual dehydration, aches, sweating and chills. The fever broke Sunday afternoon. It’s now Tuesday and I still have the same headache and stiff neck that I’d begun to notice Saturday night.

A: Go to the doctor just to get checked you could have meningitis or something.

Q: Can a muscle or nerve in the neck cause headache?
I had a horrible one sided headache last week. I still have the pain there. I had all the symptoms of a migraine except that along with it I had neck pain. Now it has settled right where the base of the skull meets the neck. It hurts when I move side to side and sends a shooting pain up my head.

My massage therapist did say that my clavical muscle on that side was very tight. Could a nerve or muscle cause pain in this spot or a headache?

A: yes. and a massage therapist would probably know. also maybe a chiropractor might help, or drinking water to stay hydrated. it’s possible yyou just slept on it wrong…

Q: What is causing my unilateral cough headache and neck stiffness? Please help!?
Six months ago, I started having one side (left) headaches and head pain. The pain comes from the back of my head and radiates into my temple. It is a pressure/aching feeling. I also have a left sided stiff neck. The headache is there daily.
The worst part is that when I cough/sneeze/strain the headache becomes much worse, feels like my head is going to explode for a few minutes until going back to normal.
I have had a brain MRI which was negative and been to several neurologists and neuro surgeons and all of them just want to put me on meds without finding out the cause of my pain. I am more worried about the cause of my pain than the pain itself.
I do have teeth clenching/TMJ on the left side but I don’t know if that is related. Thanks for your help!

A: TMJ could definately worsen it.

To me it sounds like your neck is spasming – and causing stress headaches.

Q: Can a pinched nerve in the neck cause headache?
Apart from sleeping in terrible positions because I have two dogs that make it impossible to get comfortable at night and make me sleep all twisted, can a bad back or pinched nerve cause headaches when waking up in the morning? When I get the occasional back rub I jump because my back and neck hurt so much when being massaged.

A: Absolutely. A pinched nerve can cause anything from minor discomfort to major problems.

Ban the dogs from your bed, take over the counter pain medication to relieve the headache, and see a doctor if it lasts more than a couple of days.

Q: Masturbation resulting in bad headache and neck pain?
Last week when I orgasmed I got an awful headache in the back of my head and some pretty bad neckpain. This has happened every single since then. Has this happened to anyone? What could be the cause of it?

A: yea that happened to me a few years back. doc said i had pulled a muscle in my neck. i had massage and stopped masturbating for a week. next time i tried it was all good… dont worry.

Q: How do I get rid of this neck pain and headache?
For the past few days I have been suffering from upper neck pains on the right side and this annoying headache. I first thought it was to do with “the monthly thing” but those headaches usually go away with sleep. This one wont. Then i thought it could be my pillow so i switched it and last night it was fine. But tonight the pain is back. Its driving me insane! Does anyone have any ideas how to get rid of both the neck pain and the headache and fast???? It hurts!!!

A: Sorry to hear that you are suffering from a headache and neck pain. I have a few suggestions to help you:
1) Ice your neck- this will help to reduce inflammation and give you some pain relief in your neck. Ice can be very soothing by providing an analgesic effect.
2) Neck Excercises will help to loosen up the neck muscles and increase your range of motion.
3) There is a newer product called the Halo Rejuvenator – that is made specifically for headache sufferers. The Halo works by increasing the blood supply to the affected areas (to the head and neck), strengthening the neck muscles and naturally enhancing spinal alignment. Check it out here: http://www.arc4life.com/site/615058/product/HaloPxReliever
4)Finally, get youself a good cervical neck pillow- this is very important for making sure that your head and neck are aligned properly when you are sleeping at night.

Good luck I hope this helps you out-

Q: i have a sore throat on my right side and sore neck and headache?
I can talk just fine no problem but when I swallow anything it hurts. My upper neck is also really sore with a slight headache on the same side.
I went to the clinic and the lady said it was either pollen or post nasal drip, plus I had a slight fever, 99.6. And the sore throat has been going on for about 3 or 4 days now. I’m 18 if that makes any difference. Thanks

A: im actaully going through the samt thing right now and i also have a runny nose and my fever is at 101

please if you find out please let me now.

i too am 18

Q: I have a headache and my neck is stiff and hurts really bad?
About twenty something hours ago I was walking down the stairs, slipped, and fell back, banging my head really hard. My neck has hurt and been stiff all day, and a headache just crept up on me about an hour ago. My dad tried giving me a massage earlier but that just hurt even worse. What do I do and is this something I need to be worried about? Please it hurts really bad!
NOTE: it’s the back of my neck that hurts!!

A: When you have stiffness of the neck, and an inability to move it, particularly after spinal or head injury, that is almost always a sign of trauma. Stiffness is caused by a buildup of fluid in the spinal canal, pressure on the cranial nerves, and swelling in the brain. If the swelling in the brain is caused by blood, the condition can be deadly. Bleeding in the spinal column would almost certainly lead to paralysis, and you would already be in the hospital. You may also experience stiffness and pain because of muscle seizure. In essence, it is possible that you gave yourself whiplash. In either event, you must be evaluated by a physician. You may have sustained serious injury.

Q: Is this a Sinus Headache? Moved from warm to very cold climate recently, have had headache in forehead & neck?
Was wondering if this could be sinus headache? Otherwise in great health. When I wake up and most days I have headache in forehead, back of neck and feel like I need to blow nose although not much in nasal…..just like water. Thank you.

A: A couple of thoughts. Try nasal irrigation and if it’s a sinus headache you will stop waking up with it. In cold climates people don’t open windows and doors to ventilate so there are a,lot more airborne particles. You could be breathing these in causing the sinus congestion, sinusitis and/or sinus headache. Air out your bedroom. Also make sure there is not mold in the bathroom or your bedroom. Most sinus infections are caused by fungi not bacteria.A sinus headache would not likely involve the back of the neck. Maybe you are sleeping differently in this house and straining your neck. You could have two problems going on. Just some possibilities. Nurse Kindheart

Q: Can a headache from neck problem cause high blood pressure?
I have spinal stenosis, cervical radiculopathy and herniated discs. After I stopped the traction at PT (my insurance stopped paying).
I started to get really intense headaches.
Now my blood pressure is really high
160/110 and my doc said it is from the pain.

Does pain cause your BP to go up like that?

A: yes pain can cause your b/p and your pulse to rise. high b/p can also cause you to have a head ache. i would try going to see a chiropractor.

Q: What kind of exercises is okay with pinched nerve on neck?
I have a pinched nerve in my neck and sometimes i get the tingly and pain all the way to my hands. I havent gotten symptoms in months till now I went back to my chiropractor. Meanwhile I dont want to stop exercising because I enjoy it. What are some exercises I can stick with

A: Only mild stretching of the neck in all directions.

Q: Can a pinched nerve in neck heal itself?
I think I have a pinched nerve in my neck, I have pain in the back of my head that feels like a headache, and I feel it mostly when I shake my head and look up. If its a pinched nerve what can I do and if I should go to a doctor. Additional info: I am 20 years old and had this feeling in my head for 4 days. Thank You

A: Yes, almost always this is a self limited condition.

“pinched nerve” is a bit of a misnomer. The nerve may have been trapped and stretched between tensed muscles, or this could just be a pulled muscle or sprain.

In any case, the treatment is conservative. Rest, stretching, heat, over the counter analgesics if needed. You may get some benefit from massage. You don’t need to see a doctor, and you should never let a chiropractor within 6 ft of your neck.

Q: How do I deal with a pinched nerve in neck?
They tell me I have a pinched nerve in my neck…as I wait for the MRI and nerve tests do I do ice or heat to help? They did give me Celebrex…though I have no idea if it is helping! Any ideas??

A: A simple oblique x-ray can determine if you have a pinched nerve in your neck. The MRI will also show if you have a nerve impingement as well as a disc that is protruding that compresses the nerve.

If you do have a pinched nerve there are several options. Both chiropractors and physical therapists my effectively treat this and prevent surgery. Several forms of treatment may be used to eliminate the problem. Manual therapy, manual traction, mechanical traction and non-surgical spinal decompression therapy are all viable options to unpinch the nerve.

If 10 to 12 conservative treatments of chiropractic care or physical therapy do not resolve the issue, then you may seek care with a pain management physician. If you have a herniated or broad based disc protrusion, a transforaminal or epidural injection can greatly reduce the disc bulge or herniation and along with therapy treatments, can fix the problem without surgery.

6-8 weeks of conservative therapy should be exhausted before surgery is an option.

You can also get a simple over the door traction unit for around $30 at a pharmacy to use at home between your treatments. Do take the anti-inflammatory medication as well to help.

Q: Can A Pinched Nerve in Neck be Fatal?
I believe I have a pinched nerve right where I check my pulse at on my neck. When I lay down I feel like Im going to pass out. Is this fatal?

A: NO its not fatal but its agonizing and why put up with that pain, you need to go back to your doctor if you have not been already then go now. You need some kind of pain relief medication – don’t suffer like this. Its taking you almost to passing out point, so you certainly need HELP and you need it fast.

Go to your doctor, don’t delay !!

Q: Pinched a nerve in neck or back?
Last week, the tips of my fingers on my right hand were partially asleep. Now it’s changed. If I look down at the ground, the right half of my back, butt and leg instantly get the pins and needles feeling like they are falling asleep. The second I look straight, everything feels fine. Again, this only happens when I tilt my head and neck forward. Pinched nerve?

A: see a doctor, you need an xray, a disc in your neck is on a nerve, see the doctor

Q: Can a pinched nerve in your neck cause shooting pains when you turn your head and cause tingling?
Sometimes when I turn my head I get shooting pains that go up into my head and cause a numbing and tingling feeling in my neck and head. Can a pinched nerve cause that and how can I stop this from happening, it really hurts.

A: Yes, a pinched nerve can present with those symptoms. I would see a good chiropractor because they handle this stuff every day.

Generally, most medical doctors will handle these symptoms with painkillers or cortisone injections, neither of which actually address what is causing the problem. A thorough chiropractic exam will determine what is happening and non invasive chiropractic therapies can really help, if not resolve this problem for you.

Good luck!

Q: What is the best/fastest treatment for a pinched nerve in the neck?
I had been begging my boyfriend to go camping all summer and he finally gave in, but pinched a nerve in his neck while sleeping. He has been in agony for weeks, and as a professional athlete this could really affect his work. I feel horrible! Any suggestions for quick/ thorough recovery would be greatly appreciated. Intelligent responses only please…

A: He should be seeing a sport therapists . I am sure that since he is a professional athlete he is accustomed to injury and the medics in his field that can take care him. Good luck

Q: What can be done to heal a pinched nerve in a neck?
I went to my doctor after about a week of pain in my neck. He diagnosed me with a pinched nerve, and prescribed me Vicodin, Flexeril, and Prednozone. It’s been about 4 days since I’ve been on these medications and they only seem to knock me out, making me sleep all day, not helping with the pain.

If in the end these don’t help, what more can a doctor do for me?

A: I definitely agree with the last person, but I have not had much luck with chiropractors. Perhaps you should go see a physical therapist. They can do massage to ease the pain and aid in strengthening your neck. There are different therapies that both doctors can do. Yes, look outside the box. Get off of those meds!

Q: Should I be concerned about dizziness brought on after a pinched nerve in my neck?
I’ve had a pinched nerve in my neck for about a week, and since then I’ve been slightly dizzy and light headed, and the worse it’s got, so has my dizziness. Today it’s really bad, I can barely stand, is this normal?

A: Yes, you should be concerned and I don’t think that it’s normal.

Q: Can a pinched nerve in the neck cause dizziness?
Hi,
I am wondering if a pinched nerve in the neck can cause dizziness because my mom is going through alot, and now she has dizziness on top of all of it so is this possible?

A: I have had that happen to me and I can tell you, it hurts really bad and can cause dizziness real bad head aches, irritability, short term memory loss, high blood presser! You can help her out by a simple shoulder rub fallowed by a hot towel on the back of the neck. then a cold one after 20 min.s after all that she has to keep moving it and will work it’s self out! Hope all that helps you!!!! Tell her I said to feel better!

Q: Can a pinched nerve in the neck cause headache?

Q: Can a dog get a pinched nerve in its neck like humans?
My dog seems to have a pinceh nerve in its neck I couldn’t take him to the vet this morning cuz I had work do they get pinched nerves? If so do they last about 2 days or so like mine do?

A: Yes dogs can get a pinched nerve. I’d take him to see a vet to make sure that it is a pinched nerve and not something more serious.

Q: Any home treatments I can try for a very severe pinched nerve in my neck?
I am a 22 year old male and I have been suffering with very severe and chronic neck and shoulder pain for a year and 9 months now. I have gone to two doctors, had two CT scans and an MRI (they found nothing but a pinched nerve-no disk herniations or anything)…I do ice and heat therapy every night, have done every stretch imaginable, been to chiropractors, etc…I am in so much pain it is unbearable at this point-the back of my head and my neck and shoulder are so swollen it’s ridiculous and I have weakness in my right arm now. The pain gets worse with every month…it did go away for almost a month about a year ago but has been back full force for the past year…I am at my wits end with this because nothing seems to help. Any suggestions from anyone? Anything will help me at this point…plus I know it is driving my fiancee crazy that I can’t move most of the time at night

A: I know you want a home treatment, but you didn’t mention a pain management Dr. I have found them to be extremely helpful, after 9 years of pain and no dr/phycial therapy/chiropractor helped much. Once I went to pain management, I was feeling better within a few days. It was a life changing experience for me.

Best of luck to you. Hope you are in less pain soon :)

Q: What should i do about a pitched nerve in my neck& do i even have a pinched nerve?
5 days ago a sharp sting (like needles) was in my leftshoulder, and i have been taking Ibprofen and i just switched to Asprin. My whole left arm is numb from my shoulder to my fingers. i can barley stand it. Does it even sound like I even have a pinched nerve in my neck? And would I look stupid if i went to the hospital to get it looked at? Cause i have no insurance. Please give me some advice.Thank you

A: Chiropractor and or Massage therapist. If you got Massage Envy it’s 40 bucks. however never been so not sure how pro they are. A therapeutic MT, unlike some spa’eque MT’s i have been to, they’ll do a palpation of the muscles to assess which area will relax the tension and discuss a treatment plan if applicable. A Chiro is a bit more pricey but if you can do it, try him he’ll adjust your neck which may stop repeated episodes of muscle spasm and he might do some soft tissue work or graston to loosen the effected soreness but a massage therapist should be plausible and more budget friendly.

It’s common under high tension both mental and physical stress. Yes, muscle is squeezing a nerve from what you’re describing though I can’t diagnose I’m not a doctor. So I make no claims :) But try the above first before a doc if insurance is an issue if you believe there is no other life theatening concerns going on. Also they do a health background on you before massage so be prepared if you have medical conditions that will contraindicate (not permit) massage you’ll be referred to a doc before massage.

Q: can a pinched nerve in your neck cause tingly teeth?
i think i might have a pinched nerve in my neck, it hurts so bad my teeth are tingly and it hurts to swallow on the one side. can a pinched nerve cause that?

A: I have damaged nerves in my neck due to a cervical spine injury and I’ve never felt anything like that. Nerve pain is more of a burning pain.

Q: How can i get rid of head & neck pain?
It is on the right side right below my head, causes severe head aches. Have had it for at least 6 months, daily. Don’t know what caused it. Right now just taking ibuprofen a few times a day to get rid of it.

A: It could be that you keep your head forward and have rounded shoulders.

Checkout the link below and look for other info on Fitness Fixer.

I recommend the book Fix Your Own Pain by Dr. Bookspan.

My back is much better with this information.

Q: Can not drinking caffeine cause neck and head pain?
I have been on a diet for about 1 week now and I have not drank caffeine since I have been dieting. I have had serious upper neck pain and its giving me a headache. Could not drinking soda cause this?

A: I have not taken any type of caffeine for 25 years. So 1 week is nothing! Sodas are not good for you anyways. Even worst are the diet ones. Withdrawal my cause headaches and other symptoms. Be patient. Neck pain, make sure it’s not your pillow. If you go back to caffeine try to control your intake, eliminating sodas and stick to no more than 1 cup of coffee per day.

Q: Can chronic head and neck pain be caused by TMJ?
I have daily pain on the right side of my head-in front of my ear, my temple area, my right eye and the right side of my neck. I have bruxism where I grind my teeth at night (my molars are ground down pretty short). In addition, my far back molar on the right side collapsed in height after a root canal. I was wondering can TMJ cause stabbing severe pain in the areas mentioned above similar to migraine symptoms? The pain seems most severe in my temple area.

A: Yes it is.. I have alot of patients experiencing the same symptoms & I have so far help them to healed their tmj problem..

What you need to do first is to visit a dentist specialized in TMJ or someone who knows how to handle the tmj problem. ask for a splint to be used for the day time & ask for a night guard for the night time. With those two appliance, these can help suppress the pain temporarily. You’ll be asked to have x-rays in panoramic & tmj to check the relation of the teeth structures & the tissues surrounding your jaw. (If the problem is due too your impacted molars, it needs to be pulled out by the surgeon immediately but if its with the other reason alot of treatment procedures will take place)

You still need to see him to fix the splint every week or 2 weeks till the time you feel no pain anymore or no symptoms occurs. By that time, you need to go for the next stages of treatment which is either braces, fixed bridges, or raised bite.

By the way,as a reminder when undergoing a tmj treatment you should be avoiding to chew hard foods, no spices foods, no ice colds drinks, no bubble gums for these stuffs will only hasten the pain.. believe me.. & if pain triggers now, try to massage your jaw in the area where the bones connect each other (in the cheeks area) in circular motions slowly..

If there’s still infos you want to know, email me dr_anet@yahoo.com.ph

Q: Can TMJ cause tingling sensations all over my head, neck pain, and dizziness?
My dentist and doc think I have TMJ. My jaw and ear hurt alot on my left side and I know those are clear indications of TMJ.. I just dont know about the tingling, neck pain and dizziness. I have been tested for EVERYthing before my docs came this conclusion. Could this be an accurate prognosis?

A: It can – how did it take them so long to come to TMJ with those symptoms? They’re classic.

Q: Severe Head/Neck Pain After Masturbation: What is it?
It goes from my neck to the top of my head. It’s throbbing and the pain is so bad. Anyone know what is the reason for this?

A: erotic headache? i heard of something like this before after someone has their “O” .. they can have a headache ..

Q: Taking seasonique as of 8mos ago and had neck and upper head pain that is getting progressively worse?
I have been to a doc who told me to take ibprofen which is totally useless and a chiropractor who is attentive but the pain is still coming back. I stopped drinking cause it seems to trigger the neck pain but other than that i can’t figure out what else makes it come up. i can’t sleep. its not like muscle pain but it ranges from uncomfortable to totally debilitating. anyone know what this could be or if similar symptoms arise for those taking birth control please share. thanks!

A: Certain drugs can sometimes cause serious side effects. If you are still taking the birth control I don’t understand why your doctor has not considered these as being the cause of your symptoms or even aggravating an underlying condition. It is time for him to take this seriously by taking you off the pills and insist on further medical attention from a specialist who will be able to determine what is causing your pain. He may even recommend an MRI and MRA.

Check out www.drugs.com for more information on seasonique.

Q: Neck and head pain after roller coaster?
Went on Nitro and Superman at Six Flags today.
I immediately noticed a migraine-like pain and felt like my head was gonna fall off.
It seems like I caught the most of the ride in my head and neck area.
Was hurting badly before but a few hours since not so much.
I’m 19, no brain related trauma or neck discomfort other than chronic stiffness.
This was also my first time on one, so of course something was bound to go wrong.
Anyone else experience this “whiplash” pain, so to speak?

A: You injured your neck muscle during the ride, a most likely case. If nothing major, it will recover by itself. Use heat therapy and massage. Rest will help as well.

Q: Has anyone has head and neck pain bad while on Loestrin 24 FE?
My neck and head have been hurting sooo bad since on the pills. Also I have felt as if I have had a sinus cold for the past month.Only been on it for a month.

A: It might be migraines related to use of the pill. It won’t go away, so the pill might not be right for you.

Q: Can toothaches be the cause of major head and neck pain?
Well I have a rotten wisdom that I was told needs a root canal. I have went for about with out contacting any type of dentist with that same tooth. Well I am having a pain that starts in the back left side of the neck and end and the corner of my left eye. I smoke also so that may not help. It also becomes worse when I enhale on a cigarette but the actual tooth causes me no pain even though it is rotten all the way down. I was thinking towards expose nerve and this has been going on for like 41/2 to 5 weeks now and I just want to know what are the dangers and is this a pain that can come from the tooth? There were no previous injuries to me that can cause this headache and neck pain so should I be attending the emergency room, or a dentist office? I long should I wait?

A: The tooth needs to be pulled, and yes, it is the cause of your headaches and possibly your neck pain. I just had my rotten wisdom tooth pulled and my headaches are gone, and my neck is feeling much better. I would suggest seeing a chiropractor about a week after you get your tooth pulled. And don’t forget to fill your prescription for the tooth, they give you the good stuff and you’ll probably need it all.

Q: Why do I experience extremely sharp pain in my head, neck, and ears during flights?
After a short flight of about one hour I awoke suddenly with extremely sharp pain running from the base of my neck to my head and my ears….The pain was almost unbearable almost to the point were I alerted a flight attendant. Now about ten hours later my ears and head are still hurting.

A: Sounds like an ear infection. Or trapped wax.
go to the store and get some Debrox and rinse your ears out using with water using a baby syringe and warm water.

I have it happen alot.

Q: i have constant head and neck pain, with a blocked feeling in my ear and face and neck, constantly off balance,?
started with pain in back of my head and neck about a month ago.this pain is pretty persistent now, also between my eyes and on my temples.now have the feeling of having a blocked ear, cheek and left side of neck, occasional earache in both ears, but constant off balanceness and swimmy head.not alot of energy and mental alertness different..pain is in both sides of neck now and even puttin my head on a pillow feels painful.

A: Please go see a doctor. My father complained of a major headache for two days before he went to see his doctor. His doctor told him it was the flu, to go home and take some flu meds and just relax until monday when the rest of his test results came in. The following morning we were taking him to the emergency room. He had pneumancoccyl meningitis and was in a coma for eight days. Please do not think that a pain will “go away” and go see your doctor.

Q: Neck, jaw,and head pain after wisdom teeth extraction weeks ago?
I had my left side upper and lower wisdom teeth extracted about a month ago and ever since I have had som head, and jaw pain, and whole lot of neck pain since. The pain is mostly in the side of my neck where my gland is and is not severe but just annoying like a nerve or something. I went back to the dentist and he said he don’t think anything is wrong so I went to the doctor and he said maybe a infection so I got a shot and 10 days of antibotics but still having neck pain and every once in a while head and jaw pain and sometimes rarley my jaw goes numb for a split second and I am starting to even have a slight shoulder pain.
All my aches and slight pains are on the same side as my extractions and the really feel like nerve pain.

Also ( don’t laugh) I have started having a slight pain in my penis which feels just like my other pains and I am certain somehow they alll the little pains are connected.

BTW I did finish all the antibotics

A: I had my wisdom teeth out earlier this year and I don’t think it’s normal to have pain weeks after the surgery. Talk to your doctor.

Q: Pain at back of head where neck connects with head?
I was bench pressing today and felt a sudden sharp pain at the back of my head. Pain quickly died down after a few minutes but after an hour or so it is still throbbing. Could I have strained a neck muscle?

A: Could be. Gently exercise it by turning your head side to side, and avoid applying heat if inflammation is present for at least 48 hours. Icing it immediately is ok if it is inflamed.

If pain is too severe to deal with or spreads to spine or other parts of your body, see a doctor. Tylenol should be fine for taking until you go in.

Q: Are there any fungal or parasitic infections that cause neck and head pain?
Viral is ruled out and other symptoms include stomach pain and other aches in the body. No fever or signs of infection in the blood work.

A: have you checked bacterial that is a very strong possibility with what you are saying.

Q: Can pain in left side of neck cause pain when swallow?
I had a pain on my left side of my throat and then it went to the right side and then it went. A day later I have the pain on swallowing on the left side again. I do have a tight neck on the left side as well, maybe the muscle is joined? I don’t have a sore throat but my one year old has had a cold from nursery. My temp is normal as well.

It seems better in the day then night.

Thank you.

A: This sounds more like swollen lymph nodes. Lymph nodes are located throughout areas of your body but the ones in your neck being swollen are much more noticeable and uncomfortable because they are in an area that moves around a lot (neck/head/muscles) Check under your arms toward your breasts and see if there is any swelling there, too. Swollen lymph nodes can be indicative of a lot of things but are most usually associated with infection. If you began to run a temp above 101.0 degrees you really should see a Dr. Sometimes the lymph nodes will swell for a few days and go away. That is just your body taking care of itself.

Q: Sore throat on only the right side, pain in neck, ear.?
I’ve had a sore throat on the back of the right side of my throat a few days, extreme extreme pain when i swallow. My right hear has a pretty steady pain as well, and the back of my head/neck on the right side has hurt as well. The pain is most extreme at night and early in the morning, very bad at these times. Any advice would help, thank you.

A: Rt tonsil is inflamed and swollen ? It can affect the whole side as a result.
Do you still have tonsils ? See if NSAID, like Advil or Aspirin eases the severity.

I have similar problems on and off, but mine isn’t severe affecting the whole Rt side up to my head, even the skin becomes tender and touch and couples with chronic sinusitis.

Hope it resolves soon, if not, have a physiian look at it :) :}

Q: had pain on the left side of my head above my ear, then went down to the left side of my neck?
could hardly move my head to the right side due my neck pain on the left side. I have no problem turning my head on the left side. the pain started from my head went down to my neck, what could this be.

A: Pain on the left side of the head, neck, shoulder and/or arm can be warning sign of heart trouble.

It may not be, but either way it sounds severe enough to warrant a trip to the doctor.

Q: I have a sore throat when swallowing, slight ear pain, left side neck hurt when apply pressure. Any ideas?
My throat is painful when I swallow but pretty much ok otherwise. My ear huts a little too but not too badly. When I press my hand to the right side of my neck, from under the chin to a little way down but not past my collar bone it feels sore.
Edit: It’s the left side of my neck not right if that makes a difference…

A: Sounds like you pulled your neck muscle. It will get better with time.

Q: Ive got pain on the left side of my neck, and kind of near the collar bone?
Im not sure what it is, its like i’ve pulled a muscle or something but im not sure…its when i lay sideways and move my neck the pain is there only sometimes. Its below my collar bone towards the left hand side, and when i breath only sometimes theres a very slight pinch kinda pain. Im so confused i cant even explain it, what could it be and whats the cure, should i stop moving my neck around too much?

what has this got to do with diabetes?

A: I found this information you might find usefull for your problem.

Q: throat or neck pain right side specially when swallowing?
my younger sister is also having a throat or neck pain specifically right side when she swallows. also she had a running nose several days ago and now it has progressed to coughing. could it be tonsilitis or affect of the coughing or both? what is this and how to cure or treat this condition?

A: Sore throat is usually due to a viral infection. Gargling with warm salty water or mouthwash can reduce the pain and inconvenience. More details and home remedies available at http://ailments.in/sorethroat.html

Q: Can you get left side neck pain with ethmoid sinusitis?

A: The problem with sinusitis is it can pinch the nerve. If this is the case you could get pain anywhere.

Q: Throat discomfort, gland slightly enlarged and same side neck pain w/ headache and slight facial numbing…?
And yes, I know I need to go to the doc for diagnosis/treatment, but I wanted to also get some ideas if anyone has experienced this before. Most of my online search and research indicates all this occurring on left side, but this is on my right. Sporadic elevation in temp but not a high fever, super sleepy and now arms and legs are feeling a bit weak. Ibuprofen and total rest will keep the pain at bay but it just doesn’t feel right. Any thoughts, experiences, meidcal knowledge that might get me heading in the right direction?

A: it sounds as though you have an infection Throughout the throat and sinus Area. The swelling can cause the facial numbing. You will probably need a round of antibiotics to get rid of the infection.

Q: Do you ever get pain in your neck or elbow when drawing/painting?
I draw alot and start to get left side neck pain, right handed. Oh and back pain, and im only 25. Anyone else?

A: Well, you may be putting your neck and upper back into an awkward position for a prolonged period of time. This will cause neck pain and muscle spasm in your neck, upper back, and upper extremity. To remedy this problem, I would consider changing my seating height to a more ergonomic position where you are putting less stress on your neck and upper back. You can also change your easel height (this may not be a possible, i am not a painter!!). When you are drawing/painting, don’t forget to take frequent breaks and do simple neck stretches: http://www.arc4life.com/site/615058/page/993935. Hope my advice helps you !

Q: Terrible headache and pain on left side of neck under jawbone?
I never have headaches and for the past three days I have woken up with a terrible headache – medication doesn’t seem to help. Today though I started getting a throbbing pain on the left side of my neck just under my jaw. No fever or nausea. Any thoughts?

A: If you have had a headache for three days, and you don’t normally get headaches, you need to see your doctor. It might be from a tooth abscess, but there are lots of other things it might be, and you need to get it checked out.

Q: What is this tremendous pain in the right side of my neck, just below the base of my skull?
Over the last weekend, I noticed a pain in my neck. I thought I had slept in a weird position and that the pain would go away.

Unfortunately, it hasn’t. It has been hard to turn my neck towards the right side. I have no problem turning to the left unless I get all the way to the left.

It’s been this way all week and now I’m officially “concerned/alarmed/annoyed.”

I have felt around and noticed that the pain is localized on the right side of the neck – behind the ear but below the base of my skull, so it’s definitely in my neck.

I also have a really bad headache today (is that related?) on the center of my forehead.

This is really annoying and pretty painful.

What’s going on and what should I do to alleviate the pain? (short of going to the doctor).

Thanks.
By the way, it also hurts when I tilt my head back.

I can turn to the right, but, only slowly, and not all the way.

A: go to the doctor and get an MRI done…it is a ruptured disc causing the pinch nerve causing the pain….my hubby has the same symptoms as you do. also do NOT go to a chiropractor cause the can make the nerve inflamed even more. you need pain pills and and an anti inflammatory like ibuprofen. also alternate with a cold compress and a heat pad.

Q: Pain in right side of neck and right arm?
For the past couple of days I have been having this pain in the right side of my neck. It also feels a tad bit stiff. Also the pain is now extended down my right arm and end in the middle of my right arm in the crease on the other side of my elbow. What could be causing this?

A: Most people will experience neck pain at some point in their lives. Neck pain can be acute, meaning it lasts a few hours to a few weeks, or it can be chronic. Neck pain that lasts several weeks or longer is considered chronic neck pain.

Most causes of neck pain aren’t serious. Poor posture at work, such as leaning into your computer, and during hobbies, such as hunching over your workbench, are common causes of neck pain.

But sometimes neck pain can signify something more serious. If your neck pain is so severe that you can’t touch your chin to your chest despite a few days of self-care, seek immediate medical attention.

Q: Repetitive, periodically appearing pain in side of neck, any Ideas?
For about 3-5 years, I have been having a severe pain in the side of my neck. The pain occurs beneath the jaw line under my ear. The pain could be described as a stabbing pain that feels like some one sticking me with a sharp, hot poker, It is not constant, though. The pain will hit for at most 5 – 10 seconds and then fade, reoccuring once every 10 minutes or so. Though the pain originates under the jaw line, I can feel it up to my inner ear and down through my throat. Also, I get the feeling of tenderness to the touch on the side of my face that is being affected. This is tender to the touch and extends from about the temple region down to the area of the throat under the jaw line. My thoughts are either an ear infection , a problem with my wisdom teeth (29 years old and never removed), or I don’t know. This happens to both sides of my throat, not just one side. Though it never happens to both sides at the same time. I will sometimes go 3-6 months painfree. Help, please.

A: you should also check into whether or not you have TMJ that can feel like tooth pain. I SWORE I had a cavity and went to the dentist and nothing. He said it was my jaw acting up on me. It could also have something to do with your thyroid. You should have all these things checked out. Do you have health insurance? If so you should maybe start with your regular doctor since you have tenderness to the touch on the side of your face. Then go from there. They will suggest the next move…the dentist or the endocrinologist. Good luck !!

Q: Pain in right side of neck while running?
I run around 3 miles on the treadmill 3-4 times a week. For the first 2 and 1/2 miles, I’m feeling great but soon to start to feel a pain in the right side of my neck. I am wondering what might be causing this. Is it possible that I’m overcompensating for something in my gait?

A: I think it would self evident if you were overcompensating.
It would have to be pretty obvious/overt I think to cause you neck pain.

Are you watching television while running on the treadmill or turning your head sharply to the left or right for an extended period?

Have you recently introduced some other activity into your schedule that might be causing the problem? Many people that use treadmills use them in public gyms where they use exercise machines, free weights, go to aerobic classes, yoga etc. The neck pain could also be from any number of daily activities that may have changed slightly. A new seating arrangement in math class, a new pillow etc.

I have felt tightness in the back of my neck from emotional stress that was both made better at times and made worse at times from running. Because your discomfort is on a specific side I would tend to think that it was not caused by running.

Good luck.

Q: a long question about left side neck/shoulder/arm pain…?
hi;

for the past 2 months or so i’ve had pain in my left shoulder up thru the neck and down to the arm. it hurts to just pick up an empty cup with my left hand or turn my head left let alone anything else. advil, motrin, excedrin back and body, nothing works. it does feel a bit better when the hot water from the shower is running over it. i’ve even tried putting icy hot on it, no difference.

now, for the past 2 weeks i’ve been selling plazma 2X a week. once last week and once last night, both at least 10hrs after i gave plazma the same day, both my lower legs, thighs, etc cramped so bad i could hardly walk…woke me from a good sleep. it was like they were trying to “lock up”. u wanna discuss pain. took at least 20 minutes to feel better…BUT during that time i did notice one thing…no left side shoulder/neck/arm/hand pain..i know this because i was gripping the bathroom counter so hard with both hands just to stay upright, tossing my head and neck back and forth writhing in pain from the cramping, and no pain there at all.

now i know when u lose fluids quickly like having the plazma pumped out that sometimes cramping can occur because of the loss of saline, even tho they are pumping a small amount of saline back into me after removing the plazma.

i’ve thought about a charlie horse for the leg cramping, i’ve also thought about tennis elbow or tendonitus for the left side pain…i’ve even thought of a small stroke that just affected the left side but there’s no facial problems, etc…just a continious twisting pulling pain from the neck thru to the hand…any other thoughts?

a sample of the plazma is checked each time and they are having no problems with that at all.

i’m 47, never did drugs, don’t drink or smoke and do physical labor 10hrs a day at work.

right side no problems at all.

thank you.

A: you might have a pinched nerve in your neck C2-C5
sometimes putting your right ear to your right shoulder can help. there are exercises you can also do that can help alleviate the pain

Q: Neck Ache?
ever since this morning ive had this ache in my bottom left back of my neck. Now its seem to spread to the top left of my head to my left shoulder. And the ache on my head stings if i touch it. wtf is up?

A: You slept wrong, try taking a bath towel, folding it in half long ways, then in half width ways, then roll it up. Tonight sleep with it under your neck lying flat on your back for as long as you can stand it. This will seperate your bones for it to realign itself and relax the muscles that have been strained. Also try putting a hot towel on that side of your neck for 15 minutes then an ice pack for 15 minutes, two times each, then end with a warm towel for 15 minutes before you lay down… this will also help relax your muscles in your neck. Please do not try to pop it on your own, if it doesn’t get much better by tomorrow go to the chyropractor

Q: Neck ache………..?
LOL.

I did too much headbanging last night, and now my neck aches…

What can I do to relieve it? :D

Thanks! ♥

A: Try applying heat – use a warm hot water bottle, and some anti-inflammatory tablets (ibuprofen).

A: you are in serious distress therefore cannot express yourself, please be more articulate and do not write as if a kindergartener

Q: Woke up with severe Back and Neck ache?
I’m 20 years old and I woke up yesterday morning with severe upper-back and neck ache. I can’t even turn my neck around or tilt my neck forwards or backwards. It is more on the right side of my body and it hasn’t got better after 2 days. I slept very comfortably yesterday and with a low pillow so i don’t know why it is not getting any better. Any home remedies or over-counter medicines?

A: You have some pinched muscles in your back and neck more than likely, something a chiropractor doesn’t work on, they do the bones. Because they are pinched they are pulling the vertebrae in your neck together which is making it so you can’t turn your head, the pressure is causing them to lock together. Here is how you can release your back and neck muscles to free them up:
Neck
Invert your hands and put them next to your head placing your thumbs in under your ears and your fingers behind your head. Squeeze together and hold until the muscles release. Then slowly lower your head until your neck is fully extended, release the pressure but hold your head there for another 30 seconds.
Back:
Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder and find the muscles next to your spine and press on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but remain there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.

Q: Neck ache that moves to different places?
3 days ago I got neck ache were the top of my neck meets my skull, the next day it moved down and was in teh middle of my neck, i currently have pain on the top of my right shoulder and know were else.

What could be causing this?

A: I had a similar problem and first it was a nerve. I went to PT and they did body massages and said I was very tense and had knots all over. It was very painful to have it done…but very much worth it when it was over. I also had some excercises to do to help.

Now that I am older I have arthritis in the neck and I sometimes go to PT and they do the massages and I do the exercises and it helps.

You won’t know until you get to a doctor and find out. It could be other things…but it sounds like a nerve problem.

It could be stress as that manifests in the neck and back problems too..but if you work and are at a computer etc..you might try stopping every once in awhle and moving your head in a circular pattern and back and forth and from front to back.

Q: I have thumping in my right ear and neck ache?
I woke up today, and my right ear has been thumping on and off all day, and it’s definitely not my heartbeat or pulse I can hear. The back of my neck aches on the right side and at the bottom of the right side of my head right inside at the back. My ear is not red or hot. I have experienced this before, about half a year ago probably, but it went after 10 minutes. What is it?

A: Maybe you have tinnitus or eustachian tube dysfunction. Look it up and have your doctor check it out.

Q: I have a sore throat, neck ache, ear ache and head ache. What am I sick with?
My throat hurt about two weeks ago and stopped but started again a couple days ago along with an earache in my right ear, a headache on the right side of my head around my ear and a neck ache on the top, right side of my neck. I have no pain on my left side whatsoever. Could this possibly be related to allergies? If not, what could it be?

A: I have that too, right now in fact. Mine, I believe, is my sinus clogging (allergies) beginning to abscess a cracked upper molar. If you have any bad teeth up in the sinus area, you may have the same problem.

Q: I got a terrible neck ache from bending over at the computer for a long time?
It’s extremely tight on the back of my neck, and it’s difficult to turn my head, it hurts when I do. I tried massaging it, and it helps for a little while, but it starts hurting again. This has been going on for about two hours, anything I can do to help it? There’s no one around to give me a massage.
thanks UPESKYMO, I’d like to hear her opinion, also that was an optic neurologist, the doc said there are very few in the country

A: Please get off the computer unless its your job, and relax to lay down, take 2 extra strength tylenols or advil. Try putting a warm compress on your neck such as a damp towel put in a microwave for 20 seconds. Lay down for 20 mintues until the medicine kicks in, and dont move your neck it will only get worse.

Edit: Make sure your computer is head level with your eyes if you need to bend over to look down at your computer its not at the appropriate place. When your neck is feeling better every 30 mintues or so take a 2-3 mintue break and move your neck around in a circle and side to side try to stretch it.

Q: Why does my neck/head ache when im trying to get to sleep?
my neck aches – i turn to the other side – it still aches?

A: Does your head hurt when not laying down? Maybe your pillow is too hard or too soft. It may not be supporting your neck enough. It sounds like you are a side sleeper. I am a side sleeper and notice a lot that my head is on the pillow, but my neck is not supported. When laying on your side, pull your pillow up to your shoulder and bunch it up into the open area under your neck. That may help, as it will add more support to the neck area, which may in turn keep your head from hurting. If that doesn’t work, get one of those pillows that is thicker on one end and sleep on it. After years of sleeping with your neck unsupported, you may need a neck/back adjustment from a chiropractor.

Hope that helps.

Q: why does my neck ache when i try to force it down when i stretch my legs.?
is it normal for my neck to ache? when this pain go away as i continue to stretch?

A: neck sores stiff neck its all from whatever yiou were doing yesterday!

Q: Can your neck ache from blowing your nose too hard?
I have a runny nose and i keep blowing it. I blow my nose hard though. Could this be causing my neck and chest pains?

A: Possibly, through tension. I once ripped a tendon at the back of my neck just by being in one position on the phone for an hour. Soon as I moved my head – sudden pain in neck!

Address your runny nose and see if this solves things. If it’s because of a cold – let it run it’s course. If you have allergies there is a steroid nasal spray you can get for this which should stop the runny nose.

If the above advice doesn’t work out – see your doctor.

Q: Could a curved spine be responsible for neck ache?
My first visit to the osteopath revealed (supported by doctor) that I have a really curved spine and whilst feeling around my neck and back he felt things (such as tightness) which warranted 2 more visits. He already started working on my back and said that it wouldn’t feel better today (although it hurts a little more now) but he feels that there is a good chance that in 2 more visits the problem could be solved?

A: It certainly could be the answer. It sounds as if the spinal curve is causing a lot of muscle pain as well. The treatment that you are under going will help loosen up the muscles and may help relieve some of the curve. You may need some other treatment in the long run, such as physical therapy to keep your neck muscles loose. Physical therapy is an ongoing thing, though; it’s a series of exercises designed to improve your physical stamina and strength.
Could some other treatment needs come up in the future- certainly, the curve in you neck could change and your needs could change. But that is later on.
Good luck.

Q: Why does my neck ache when sit ups on gym ball?
Ive done sit ups for 4 days now on gym ball. I am so unfit.
Mostly to tone my stomach.
First few days my stomach ache which it shows it was working, now its more strain on my neck. My stomach dosnt seam to ache now.

Is it because im getting use to the sit ups? Is my neck aching because i sit up too high?

Im not sure if im doing it right.

Thanks.
X

A: Well, I think you have figured out that you are hurting your neck.

Sit ups or crunches are bad for the neck and back. If you do the plank correctly you will be better off and not hurt your neck or back.

Check out Dr. Bookspans info for better ways.

Q: How do i relieve neck ache on the right side of my neck.?
I woke up in the middle of the night and tryed moving my head around and whenever i bend my neck to make it move down right, it hurts allot.

Whats the quickest way to relieve this

A: Massage is all that comes to mind or maybe a hot bath. Either way it should be gone or at least eased off in 48 hours.

Q: what should i take for neck ache?
i have a horrible neck ache when i bend it to the left i almost start screaming, what would be best to take tylenol, advile, asprin, aleve??? i wanna take the right one istead of taking one and it not working.

A: Advil or gerneric Ibuprofen works best.

Q: What causes neck pain and difficulty in swallowing?
For years I have had problems with neck pain and swallowing. I have been to over 10 doctors and no one can cite the cause, or give me relief. They all say, “The MRI looks perfect to me.” Lately, the problems get more severe when I tilt my head back, or do any kind of physical w

A: Well neck pain can be caused by a lot of things.

They way you sleep, your bed mattress is it to firm or to soft, if you work and you left weights the wrong way and your over all posture.

For your neck pain I would recommend a natural remedy like Palates and Yoga. If that dose not work try seeing a Chiropractor.

As fair as your Pain Swallowing I’m not sure you might want to see an Allergy specialist.
Hope this helped..

Q: Anyone who has hypertension medication which causes neck pain and swollen legs?
Hi. my mum has high blood pressure. She complains daily of neck pain and swollen legs. could this be caused by her medication or by the high blood pressure?

A: neck pain and swollen legs may be due to cardiac failure due to hypertensive heart disease. antihypertensive drugs can cause swoolen legs specially ace inhibitors and calcuim channel blockers group of drugs but they do not cause neck pain. go see her doctor.

Q: Is there some sort of virus that causes neck pain and stiffness? ?
My mom and dad both had the pain/stiffness. Then my aunt and uncle came down with it. A few days ago I had it and still do. Today my daughter is complaining of her neck hurting.
Thanks but I know its not meningitis because that is the only symptom anyone has had. I just think its odd that we would all have neck strains at the same time. So, I figured it had to be something contagious.
I am bringing her to the doctor in the morning. I am pretty sure that all my kids have had the vaccines for meningitis. They are all updated on their shots and are from ages 2-12

A: That sounds like menengitis.

Here’s more info I found on webmd.com:

Meningitis – Topic Overview

What is meningitis?

Meningitis is an infection of the coverings around the brain and spinal cord.

The infection occurs most often in children, teens, and young adults. Also at risk are older adults and people who have long-term health problems, such as a weakened immune system.

There are two main kinds of meningitis:

Viral meningitis is fairly common. It usually does not cause serious illness. In severe cases, it can cause prolonged fever and seizures.
Bacterial meningitis is not as common but is very serious. It needs to be treated right away to prevent brain damage and death.
The two kinds of meningitis share the same symptoms. It’s very important to see a doctor if you have symptoms, so that he or she can find out which type you have.

What causes meningitis?

Viral meningitis is caused by viruses. Bacterial meningitis is caused by bacteria.

Meningitis can also be caused by other organisms and some medicines, but this is rare.

Meningitis is contagious. The germs that cause it can be passed from one person to another through coughing and sneezing and through close contact.

What are the symptoms?

The most common symptoms among teens and young adults are:

A stiff and painful neck, especially when you try to touch your chin to your chest.
Fever.
Headache.
Vomiting.
Trouble staying awake.
Seizures.
Children, older adults, and people with other medical problems may have different symptoms:

Babies may be cranky and refuse to eat. They may have a rash. They may cry when held.

Young children may act like they have the flu. They may cough or have trouble breathing.

Older adults and people with other medical problems may have only a slight headache and fever.

It is very important to see a doctor right away if you or your child has these symptoms. Only a doctor can tell whether they are caused by viral or bacterial meningitis. And bacterial meningitis can be deadly if not treated right away.

How is meningitis diagnosed?

Your doctor will ask questions about your health, do an exam, and use one or more tests.

Lumbar puncture is the most important lab test for meningitis. It is also called a spinal tap. A sample of fluid is removed from the spine and tested to see if it contains organisms that cause the illness.

Your doctor may also order other tests, such as blood tests, a CT scan, or an MRI.

How is it treated?

Treatment depends on the cause. See your doctor right away if you or your child has symptoms, because bacterial meningitis can be deadly if not treated right away.

Bacterial meningitis is treated in a hospital. You or your child will get antibiotics. And you will be watched carefully to prevent serious problems such as hearing loss, seizures, or brain damage.

But viral meningitis is more common, and most people with this form of the illness get better in about 2 weeks. With mild cases, you may only need home treatment. Home treatment includes drinking lots of fluids and taking medicine for fever and pain.

Can meningitis be prevented?

The best way to protect your child from meningitis is to make sure he or she gets all the standard immunizations for children. These include shots for measles, chickenpox, Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) disease, and pneumococcal infection.

Talk to your doctor about whether you or your child also needs the meningococcal vaccine, which is a shot to prevent bacterial meningitis. It is recommended for:

Adolescents ages 11 and 12.
Teens ages 13 to 18 who haven’t had the shot yet. (They should get it as soon as possible.)
College freshman living in dormitories.
People who plan to travel to countries known to have meningitis outbreaks.
People without a spleen.
People with HIV.

My brother had this as a toddler. I’m not sure if he had bacterial or viral. I do know that the menengitis made his eyes look like he had 2 black eyes & my mom was accused of hitting him. CPS stepped in & did a thourough investigation. I was about 3 or 4 & vaguely remember the questions from the case worker if I saw my mom hit my brother.

It’s scary stuff so please, please go get checked out by a doctor ASAP!

Q: Can neck pain cause a severe headache?
Just wondering if neck pain can cause a severe headache? I have had a headache for a week now and my neck is killing me…..I fell on the ice 2 weeks ago and think I might have given myself wiplash ?!?!

I am scared my headache is something more serious….I wake up without one but once I start to move around and stuff it gets so bad I have to lay down..

Any suggestions? Do you think it is my neck causing me these problems?

A: yes, pinched nerve or injury from your fall…

I’d suggest you either go to a chiropractor, or have someone massage your neck where it hurts.

watch your diet, etc.. good luck

Q: neck pain?
Can neck pain cause you to become dizzy?

A: Absolutely. You have 2 large arteries, called vertebral arteries, that are in your neck. These can become compressed for example by something as simple as muscle spasms in your neck. If they become compressed, that means not as much blood is flowing through them as there should be which would cause you to become dizzy then if blood flow is lessened to your head. Kind of the same idea of how people get dizzy if they hop up really quick after laying down. It’s hard for the blood to get up to the head that fast so you get dizzy and light headed.

Q: How long will it take to heal neck pain caused by exercising in a wrong manner?
I have been practicing yoga since January this year and suffering from severe pain in the neck and fingers of the hands ever since. It was only a couple of days back that I realized that I was exercising in a wrong manner which caused the pain. I have stopped exercising for the last two days. There has been about 5% improvement in the pain since. How long will it take to heal completely? Will I require surgery?

A: That would depend on the amount of damage and if you use this, http://www.hubpages.com/hub/Speed-healing-of-trauma-injuries-through-self-directed-regeneration.

Q: Flu and neck pain…What causes it?
I currently have the flu and the most uncomfortable symptom is pain in the back of the neck. I can’t sleep because it is so uncomfortable. What is this pain cause from? It is really bugging me!

A: I agree with skep. See a doctor as possible. Request a spinal tap to check from cloudy fluid if your neck is stiff, and if you have fever. Neurological symptoms are a definite sign. If you experience symptoms like this, but it isnt very severe, i would recommend not getting a tap, because it most likely WILL show viral meningitis, and doctors may put you through unnecessary treatment, since viral can’t really be treated, and it will make you feel even more uncomfortable.

Q: Is there any way neck pain can cause a sore throat?
I know this is probably a really stupid question, but I’m just hoping my sore throat isn’t a sign that I’m getting sick. On thursday night I was headbanging (blah blah blah, it’s bad for me, I don’t really care), and that causes neck pains of course. So I was wondering if said neck pains could cause a few days of a sore throat?

A: no as ive had lots of neck pain over the years from breaking mine and never had it connected to throat pain sounds like ur coming down with something like a cold etc and the headbanging would give you a headache or whiplash more than anything else lol

Q: How can you get rid of neck pain, and what causes it?

A: “This job is a pain in the neck” may be more than just a saying. Tension on the job or at home, tasks that require a lot of leaning over a work surface, poor posture, and even a too-soft mattress can cause neck pain and stiffness. Of course, some neck pain is the result of injury or disease, but the vast majority of neck pain is due to simple muscle tension.

Neck strain can come from poor sleeping habits.

The neck, with its intricate structure and wide range of mobility, is particularly vulnerable to stress and strain. The head, which weighs between 10 and 20 pounds, is supported by a stack of seven small bones called vertebrae and held in place by 32 complex muscles.

Attached to and between the vertebrae are pads of fibrous cartilage called discs that act as cushions, or shock absorbers. Eight nerves, which relay sensations (including pain), and four major arteries, which carry blood, run through the neck and connect the head with the shoulders, chest, and arms. The delicate spinal cord runs through the center of the stack of vertebrae and is protected by it. Add to this complex structure the fact that the neck moves more than any other part of the body, and you’ve got a formula for trouble.

It’s a vicious cycle. When our muscles tense, either because of physical or emotional stress, the blood supply to the muscles decreases, causing pain. And that pain causes the muscles to tense further. That’s why the best way to relieve neck pain is to try to eliminate or ease the physical or emotional stress in addition to treating the muscles.

The tips on the next page can help you break the tension-pain cycle and learn new habits that will keep the tension from developing in the first place

Q: What causes neck pain and how do I make the pain stop?

A: Can be a number of things,
1. If you jerked your head you could have got the alignment out in your neck, so you should see a chiropractor for an adjustment,
2. could have slept on it wrong and irritated a muscle, first thing to try that’s cheap, get some Mentholatum Deep Heating Rub, put a small amount on your neck and with a towel between you and your pillow lean back and relax you might just feel that muscle release and the pain will be gone, but whatever you do wash your hands well before rubbing your balls, laugh now then try it, if that doesn’t do it see the chiropractor.

Q: I get bad neck & shoulder pain down 1 side which causes terrible migraines about twice a week, know any cures?
I’m 24 and active. I’ve tried swimming, but my neck and shoulder are always tensed up. Massage doesn’t really help and the only painkillers that do anything are Syndol which contain codeine, caffeine and a muscle relaxant. People always offer me migraine cures but I know that its the neck pain that causing the migraines and thats what needs treating. help!

A: I work at a chiropractic clinic, it sounds like a lot of what we treat most days. You could have a trapped nerve in your neck or back, it could also be a repetitive strain injury from swimming or work. Try calling your local chiropractic clinic see if they can help. Alot of clinics do offer free assessments so it shouldnt cost you a penny to have it checked out. Good Luck

Q: blow to the neck causes pain in shoulder blade?
i took a blow to my neck and my arm went numb for a few seconds and my neck was really sore and stiff its the fourth day i can feel pain underneath my shoulder blade every time i turn my head or breathe

A: Go to a chiropracter, or at least some kind of dr. right away, numbness is not good.

Q: I’m losing range of motion in my neck, turning left causes pain under skull behind let ear. What can I do?
I’m told I have degenerative arthritis in my neck. I take glucosomine / MSM what else can I do to ease the pain and get back into full motion.

A: Arthritis Today magazine by the Arthritis Foundation has said many many times that chiropractic or osteopathic care, including manipulation, is an effective treatment for this, along with NSAIDS for inflammation & pain relief, plus nutritional agents like glucosmine.

I’ll put a link to the online magazine with one of its regular stories saying this (see item #15 on the page about Manipulation).

I grew up in a family where chiropractic & osteopathic care were both laughed at as quackery, and I learned differently after I had a car accident in my mid-30s. My car was hit head on, and then rear ended. Wow! Talk about neck & shoulder & back pain! A chiropractor who specialized in holistic care was the person who pulled me through. I still see her about 6 times a year for follow up care; again, Arthritis Foundation says that this is a gentle and effective therapy to keep the joints flexible, which is critical. Regaining mobility is much harder and often much less achievable than not losing it to begin with by getting to therapy right away. Ditto with pain management–address it right away.

Hope this helps.

Q: Anyone have ideas for chronic neck pain relief?
I have had this chronic neck pain for a few years now. I have gone to neurosurgeon, chiropractor, ct scans, mri’s, amytriptoline, feldine, and still continute to suffer from it. It’s all day everyday, but is present when I “move”. It’s located on the right back-side of my neck just at the top of the spine. They have found nothing in the x-rays or the scans. Chiropractics and the meds did help a little, but I didn’t cure it. I am looking for all and any help possible. Thanx so much to anyone who answers!!!

A: I broke my neck in 98 & never showed up on x-rays for 18 months. I can relate to what Ur going through. Till you get to a health supply store to get a herbal tube U shaped sack that U microwave & place on your neck try this. Get a towel, get it damp & nuke it then place around your neck. Simple exercises like slowly moving head L – R & same thing up & down. Only move till before it hurts. If your Doc is not giving U pain meds, try a methadone clinic. What U can get on line will not be strong enough unless U get soma. Pain meds are not that strong. Tramadal is about the strongest you can get. Be careful about ordering from overseas. Ask Ur doc for trigger point shots, these work wonders for about 3-4 weeks. There is the kind you get while in front of an x-ray machine that go in your disc, these last for months, but they do hurt. As long as you have been in pain you should get into pain Mgt. That’s where you get relief, get Ur doc to refer U to one. I hope I’ve helped you, I know what it’s like.

Q: What is the best neck cushion for pain relief?
I strained my neck in a car accident and the hospital-grade therapy pillows aren’t giving me enough support so my neck ends up cramped if I’m sitting upright for more than an hour. I’d like to get a neck cushion that I can wear to support my head and keep my pain down, any suggestions?

A: I would reccomend a u shaped pillow for you if you are going to be sitting upright for more than one hour. These neck pillows are often known as “travel pillows”- because they are great for while you are on an airplane.

Q: how to get relief of neck pain?
My family and i just got back from vacation and my cousin is complaining about neck pain. She played chicken with a little girl on her shoulders and now her neck is stiff and she is suffering from a lot of pain. What home remedies can she do to get rid of the pain?

ps my cousin is 15 and weighs about 105 lbs and the little girl was 9 and weighed about 75 lbs.

A: see a doctor

Q: Neck Pain Relief. Sore Neck. Ear Infection?
I am recently suffering from neck pain. It is on my left side and the pain is in my neck ap to the left side of my head. It was like this yesterday but im having problems sleeping. I recently used ear drops to get rid of wax. Could this be an ear infection? What should i do because paracetamol doesn’t seem to be working. (teenager)

A: Sounds to me like you may have strained a muscle in your neck. I had the same problem about two weeks ago. Woke up every morning with a massive headache shooting all the way down the right side of my neck and down a few inches into my shoulder blade. From the base of the right side of my skull.

Ibuprofen for a few days, some mild heat while you are awake, some simple stretches you can find in a snap on Y!Search, and you should be ok in a couple weeks.

BUT, please go see a doctor just to be safe, and as soon as possible if it doesn’t seem to be getting any better. I am in no way a professional, just offering some advice…

Hopefully it was at least helpful.

Cheers and Happy Holidays

Q: Neck Pain relief?
I woke up two mornings ago and had a hard time getting up as I feel like I slept on my neck wrong.Yesterday it was so bad it was hard to get around. I don’t have a fever or any other symptoms. The pain is in the middle back of my neck and radiates to my shoulders. Both shoulders are extremely tight right now! I plan on going to dr tonight after work, but any solutions temporarily? I need to make it through the workday.
:(

A: It could be that you did just sleep on your neck and shoulders in a bad way. However, it is also possible that you hurt a disc while sleeping. Strangely enough, I actually had 3 discs in my neck crushed while I was sleeping! (seems my husband had grabbed my pillows out from under my head as he slept, just crushing my discs……..like a bad whiplash). I am interested in learning if your arm feels any discomfort or numbness, and if your thumb, or fingers feel strange to you. If the pain continues, do get checked. I was nearly paralyzed for life, because I couldn’t understand how my discs could possibly be crushed! (they were sitting all crushed at the front of my throat!)

Q: neck pain?
i have bad neck pain on the left side of my neck.
its been hurting for about 2 days now.
i finding it hard to sleep and do everyday tasks.
i cant even turn my head to the left without it hurting.
any ideas on what it might be?
any ideas for pain relief?

A: It might be me. I am a little annoying.

It could be a trapped nerve, they are really painful and restrictive.
Try gently massaging the sore area after a warm bath to relax the muscle.
Alternatively go see you GP they will suggest a solution.

best of luck, bright blessings.

Q: natural neck pain relief!?
have a curvature of the spine and the last few days ny neck has been hurting.

I think its because of late nite studying/late nite computer work.

Anyone no of any natural ways to help my neck? :)

Thanks!

A: Moist heat. Wet a small towel in hot water, wring it out and place it around your neck for 20 minutes replace as towel cools. Also apple vinegar is supposed to help sore muscles. Rub it in where it hurts.

Q: What is the best way to relief pain in the neck and shoulder after sleeping on it the wrong way?

A: Good question. I always sleep on my side and get pain around my shoulder blade. It’s like a crick or knot from sleeping the wrong way. I get a 5 lb. dumb bell and lift it around and try to work out the knot along with some Advil or Alieve.

Q: What pain relief tablets are good for trapped nerves in neck/shoulder. Please help?
My dad has had a bad shoulder since Wednesday, he went to the doctor on Thursday and he told him he had a trapped nerve and prescribed him Tramadol, but this has many side effects and doesn’t really numb the pain for him.
He is in a lot of agony so i wondered if anyone has experienced this and/or has any advice on pain relief and if you know what sort of time it could take to subside. I will pass on any answers
Thank you !

A: Tramadol is a horrid drug and can cause side affects that are very unpleasant.
Often they will prescribe a mix of drugs for nerve pain which work much better but this involves prescription strengh Co codamol and others that take time to work. Which is why they Doctors go for a hard hitting one to start with.
Might actually get some relief from a painkiller that is an anti inflammatory as well. A pharmacist will be able to help you and advice you on the drugs sold from behind the counter.

In theory as it is a trapped nerve it should be a short term problem and is best relieved by being proactive and paying to see a physiotherapist or chiropracter as quickly as possible.

Q: Stiff neck? how to relief the pain?
So the day before yesterday I forgot my posture while sitting on the computer & I was watching tv so my neck was turned to the right while being on the computer..I did this for like 2 hours cause I was looking for a phone plan online… anyhow..the window behind me was also open and I was wearing a tshirt..but it wasnt cold outside..

Yesterday I woke up with neck pain, on the left side of my neck.
It wasn’t too bad, let my husband rub it etc, then at night it got a little worse and I put a heat pad on it.

Now last night I couldnt sleep and woke up cause of the pain..several times..then I almost couldnt get out of bed, my neck would hurt too much so I’d have to push myself up with my hands..Or hold my neck while getting up.

So today was really painfull, i cant really move my head down without pain, same to the left side..but i can move it to the right fine.
Also when I lift my left arm up I get this shooting pain..
The shower reliefs it but just for a minute..

Hi,
i was wondering if anyone could help me. i’ve had a neck injury and the pain travels to my back.. its unbearable most of the time. the doctor said the muscles in my neck are out of place, pushing against my spine, making it hurt. i was put on Norspan but went off it cuz it made me so sick. im using a pro tens machine but doesn’t seem to be doing much. i can barely get through a few hours without being in really bad pain. can anyone please help me with pain relief without using drugs..
Much appreciation..

A: You may be a candidate for non surgical spinal decompression. Google this in your area to see if you can find a Dr that provies this treatment. You will probably need to have a cervical MRI to see if you are candidate.

Q: What is the best, ointment or spray or solution for severe back and neck pain?
I had two surgeries: neck fusion and hip graft, and lower back leminactomy. I have severe pain morning, day and night. What kind of solution, spray, or ointment is the best pain relief for pain? I don’t want any type of drugs or medication. Please, can anyone help me.

A: First, ointments and sprays are not designed for severe pain.
Suggestions:
1] start taking glucosamine, 3 pills a day if about 150 pounds, 4 if over 200. Also take omega three fish oils.
2] maintain normal weight – less stress on already tender joints
3] walk or swim or whatever you can do to keep active – arthritic patients who exercise regularly report less pain
4] do gentle stretching exercises every day
5] go to the health food store, and ask for a hot hemp stick – it’s like an overgrown chapstick you can put on the part that hurts [ no drugs - has hot peppers, eucalyptus, peppermint, cloves etc. that you can just rub on! [ P.S. - do not grab it by accident and put on your mouth - talk about hot lips! ]
6] consider a chiropractor
7] consider accupuncture
8] consider professional massage
