Q: When does neck and back pain start to occur during pregnancy?
When does the actual neck and back pain usually occur? I’m almost a month pregnant and I woke up this morning experiencing the worst back of my neck and back pain! I’m experiencing stiffness and sharp pains everytime I bend my head neck or back forward, even when I’m sitting down. Has any woman experienced this kind of back pain? When does back and neck pain usually start during pregnancy?

A: It could just be stress for you or you could have pulled a muscle.

Since you are only a month pregnant, I wouldn’t think that the neck and back pain was from pregnancy.

A cause for neck and back pain is because of the increase in hormones which causes a shift in joints and can loosen ligaments which could cause posture to change and a less support for your back.

Another reason is once you become bigger and actually have a pretty big belly, your center of gravity will change and this causes a different posture that your body isn’t used to., which over time will cause pain. Also when the baby becomes bigger and you start to gain more weight, your back has to support more weight in a different area than it’s used to. Ever carry a heavy back pack around all day and your back begins to hurt? It’s like that, only in your belly.

You can start to help symptoms of this by using pillows between your legs to even out your back while you are sleeping. There are also certain pregnancy pillows that are made specifically for pregnant women.

I started feeling back pain around 20 weeks. I’m also very small built and very short, and carrying a baby and baby weight for me was a struggle. You’ll start feeling pain once you put on more baby weight and your belly gets bigger, but it can all depend on your build.

Good luck to you!

Q: What kind of doctor do I see for neck/back pain?
Major back/neck pain and vertigo. Have seen chiropractor, naturopath. What type of conventional doctor do I see for this? Orthopedic? ENT? Thanks!

A: Orthopedic surgeon or “orthopod.”
I’ve found it to be best to use both the western and the alternative approaches for chronic muskuloskeletal pain.

Q: What to do about neck/back pain because of a large chest?
I am a 32 DD and sometimes my neck/back hurts…I think partly because of my disproportionate figure and large chest. Are there any exercises I can do that will help me strengthen my back/neck and alleviate the pain?

A: I completley understand, I’m a 30F. Doing pec exercises helps tighten the muscle beneath the breasts which in the long run will help. Also getting professionally fitted for a bra (I’m not talking getting measured at victoria secret) when you have the right bra it can take alot of weight off your back and shoulders. A breast reduction is a last option type thing i would say. Good luck, and talk to your doctor.

Q: I recently became vegetarian and I get frequent back and neck pain?
My neck’s hurting as I write this. I became vegetarian about 4 months ago and the back+neck pain started around then. Are these two connected? I also experience bloating. How to solve this?

A: It must be from leaning over the salad bar..LOL…just kidding. The 2 aren’t related.

Kim…have you been “imbibing”? You’re typing like a flexi…LOL

Q: What should I do about back/neck pain?
I’m a thirteen year old female and I have been having really bad back pains. Usually in my upper back and often in my neck, too. My very top vertebrate tend to hurt a lot. Occasionally, my lower and middle back will hurt, but not very often. This has been happening on and off for about a month and a half now. It hurts to twist my neck around, bend down, bend my neck down, and twist my back around. Sometimes it just hurts sitting there, though.
Any suggestions as to what it is and what I should do?

A: Regardless of what happened, you should go to the doctor as soon as you can. If you hurt yourself due to a bad fall the pain could be caused either by a something small like bruising or something more serious like a slipped disc. If this is the case, it’s good to treat it now so you don’t cause more damage that could be harder to treat down the line.

Also you could try to use magnetic jewelry to help relieve pain. I have pains in my back and arms from playing baseball. To help bring some relief I started wearing a magnetic bracelet and necklace. They do bring me a lot of relief, so they may be worth a try. http://acemagnetics.com/

I hope this helps and I hope whatever you decide to do brings you some form of relief.

Q: Any suggestions for a good exercise DVD for neck and back pain?
I have been having chronic neck pain (disk degeneration) and recent back pain (disk) and before seeking out a physical therapist and overloading on Advil, I wanted to try an exercise DVD for back and neck pain. Anyone know of any effective ones? PLEASE, THIS IS A REAL QUESTION, SO ONLY SERIOUS ANSWERS…..

A: Hello,

There’s a great article on back pain exercises here:http://www.backandneckpainresources.com/Reasons%20Your%20Back%20Pain%20Exercises%20Don’t%20Work%20and%20What%20You%20Can%20Do%20About%20It.html

In the article, you’ll learn why most back pain exercises don’t work and what you can do about it.

Pain is simply a warning sign that something is wrong and needs to be addressed. I would use caution against taking Advil because simply taking medication to hide the pain is like shutting off the fire alarm in a burning building. You’ve got to treat the problem to offset any additional challenges that may manifest itself from your current condition(s).

Believe it or not, most neck and back pain relief can be found using a natural and multifaceted approach in nutrition, physical and emotional healing – supporting your body’s natural ability to heal for pain-free living. A simple change in the way that you eat, postural re-balancing and even using a simple emotional freedom technique can work wonders!

Hope this helps!

To your great health,
Charlie

Q: How can I get rid of neck and upper back pain?
I’m 16 years old and this year I have neck and back pain almost every day after school. I think it’s my posture, I try to stand up straight but it’s hard for me. I’m usually slouched over in my desk too. Usually I take advil, but I’m wondering if it’s normal for me to have neck pain at my age. And how can I stop getting it? Thank you!

A: Lola,
It’s not normal to have neck pain at your age. I would have your parents take you to the chiropractor. Also you should try this pillow, it will help: http://www.arc4life.com/site/615058/product/LinearGravityPillow

Q: I am suffering from shoulder/upper back/neck pain. How have other people over come this problem ?
I am suffering from shoulder/upper back/neck pain. Basically bad frontal/head/neck posture. I am been seeing a chiropractor for 3 months and doing stretchers. Without much relief. I was wondering if there a better way.
How have other people overcome this problem ?

A: Firstly, go to your doctor and ask him to get you X-rayed. You could have a disintegrated disc that is pressing on a nerve or maybe a slipped disc. You cannot speculate until you have had the X-ray so, as I said…..get an X-ray, okies.

Q: How do i find a good Physical Therapist for neck and back pain in my area?
I have neck pain and some back pain so my doctor referred me to a physical theripist, he didn’t give me any suggestions just said to go to whichever is closest to where i live. What should i be looking for in a good physical theripist? Also I’m kinda scared since i’ve never been to one before. What happens there?

A: I would highly recommend someone with a certification in mechanical diagnosis and therapy. Go to http://www.mckenziemdt.org . If no one is available, I would ask to see someone who has a manual therapy certification. These are some of the most scientifically validated forms of treatment in PT…depending on the “type” of back pain you have.

Q: Why do I feel like I never get enough sleep, need to stretch all the time, have back pain, neck pain?
I sleep about the normal amount for an adult, Grant it I don’t always get the sleep I should be getting. I am a normally stressed out person but I don’t feel like my pain is normal. I am seventeen and my upper back through my shoulders hurts ALL OF THE TIME, my head hurts often, my legs ache, I have neck pain, and the most annoying symptom is I feel like I need stretched all of the time.

A: Maybe see a phsyio or chiropractor about your back. to make sure there’s nothing out of place.

Maybe upgrade your pillow -this could be the source of your pain.

I get neck and back pain, this was from work I did at the time and also car accidents – When my pain flares up I use a heat pack to loosen my muscles. And Yoga also helped me strengthen my inner core. And when it’s too bad, I see a chiropractor (I get a massage there too)

Q: Can an osteopath really solve the upper back/ neck pain which results in tension headache?
I’ve been visiting a recommended and highly qualified osteopath for the last year in order to get help with re-occurring pain which rises from in between my shoulder blades, into the back of my neck and shoulders, and causes me to experience dull but persistant headaches.

Although the visits to the osteopath do bring some relief, it is only temporary and they haven’t solved the problem.
I am now wondering whether there is any point in continuing these visits, as the problem seems to be muscular, probably brought on by some kind of tension, and not of musculo-skeletal nature.

Is there anything else in the field of the ‘alternative’ medicine that some of you have perhaps found useful when experiencing this, or similar?

Thank you for your time:)

Btw, I do practice Pilates on a regular basis and am on a skinny side.
Thank you all very much for your advice.
I wish you all a happy, healthy and peaceful 2007.

A: Since you say visits to Chiropractors and Osteopaths fix the problem temporarily, you probably need to look at what you are doing between visits. If your problems are not caused by some sort of neurological or spinal problem, then its very likely that you are doing something to cause the problem, or at least failing to do what’s needed to prevent the problem from reoccurring. It sounds a lot like you could have a habit of craning your neck, hunching your back, or maybe sleeping in an awkward position. These types of things can be turned around by removing the cause and getting things back on track by stretching. If the pain is caused by spasms, you might find some relief by taking a magnesium supplement several time per day. I found this website to be helpful:

Q: what’s the best way to posistion your pc monitor to avoid neck / back pain?
I have moved it all kinds of ways, higher lower and different angles. the monitor is up a bit higher. it sets on top of a small printer stand about 4-6 inches at the most but I am able to elevate my chair so I am viewing the center of the monitor but still suffer neck pain.

A: Rule of thumb is the lower 1/3 of the monitor should be at eye level so that your neck is in slight extension,

Q: Alternatives to Chiropratic for chronic upper back and neck pain?
I’ve had upper back (shoulder) pain for a few years now (I’m 25) – and recently developed neck pain. Going to the chiropractor does hlpe alleviate the pain, but it does not go away completely. And I’m worried the more I go to the choripractor, the more I will need it.

I’ve tried sports therapy, osteopathy, acupuncture, chinese medicine ball, nothing has worked as good as chiropractic, but I would like an alternative.

A: You could try a TINs unit, which electronically blocks the pain signals that your body sends to your brain. You wear it on your hip like a cell phone, there are pads you attach to your body, where the pain bothers you.
I am on pain meds. They work great…BUT are practically impossible to quit on your own once you begin them. I don’t necessarily recommend THAT path.
Do you know WHY the pain is there? Have you had an MRI, X-rays? Once the reason is revealed, maybe your condition will be easier to treat.

Be well.

Q: I have really poor posture and suffer from back and neck pain any tips to improve it?
My head tends to jut forward and I suffer from low back pain. Please don’t say chiropractor or yoga/pilates. I’m looking for exercises and tips.

A: Because it’s hard to break old habits, here’s a tip on how to train yourself to stand more erect while keeping your shoulders held back.

1. Stand in a corner with your feet around 2 feet from the wall, distance will depend on your size.
2. Place your palms, at shoulder height, flat against opposite walls.
3. Slowly lean in toward the point where the walls meet.
4. Repeat 10 times once a day.

I was given this exercise when I was having a lot of back pain, much of which was caused by bad sitting posture.

Not only does your day time posture affect your neck and back, but your sleeping posture does, as well. Before you fall off to sleep try to straighten out your upper body, the same way you would if sitting or standing. Training yourself to sleep like this can make a big change.

Because of my back pain issues, I’m in the process of putting together a website that is all about back exercise and creating pain relieving approaches to your daily activity. You may find some useful back and neck stretches there.

Q: help for horrible back and neck pain after birth of 3rd child?
delivered 9lb 6 ounce baby nov 6th, i am little so it was a fast but hard delivery (no medication) ever since i came home i have real bad lower back pain that radiates into my neck, i’ve got motrin but it doesn’t work, any thoughts?

A: For your neck, try a heating pad or a take a washcloth, get it damp with water, microwave it for 30 seconds to a minute, then lay on the back of your neck. Test it with your hands first to make sure it’s not too hot. This should atleast give you some temporary relief!
