Q: I’m 22 and have been having upper back and chest pain for the last 3 days. Sometimes dull, others stabbing. ?
For the last 3 days I have been experiencing chest pain and upper back pain. At times it also has been radiating under my arms. Part of the time it is very dull, and others it is stabbing. And then there are times where I have not pain at all.
I’m 22. I have had a cold recently. A little cough, but that has gotten better over the last few days.
Any suggestions or answers would be greatly appreciated.
A: I am not a doctor, but my husband was having pain in his chest, and back. He thought he was having a heart attack. He had recently had a cold also. We went to the e.r., and after a chest x-ray, they told us he had pleurisy. It is mucus, or fluid around your lung causing pain. The doctor explained it to us like this. He said it was like pneumonia, only instead of being inside the lung, it’s outside the lung. I suggest you get to a doctor, and find out what is wrong. Normally it isn’t your heart if the pain comes and goes, but you never know.
Q: What do I do to get rid of chest and back pain when I eat and swallow?
im 14 years old and ive been experiencing some back pains and chest pain. the back pain went away but the chest is stilll here. it mainly hurts when i swallow or eat. please help me . i dont know what to do. ive seen my doctor but he didint talk about it much.
A: You need to go back to the Doctor and get a referral to see a Gastroenterologist.
There are a few conditions that involve the oesphagus such as Achalasia that cause pain/discomfort in the chest after eating and drinking.
The Gastroenterologist’s are the best to diagnose your problem and treat it as General Doctor’s tend to just fob you off until it gets so bad you can’t handle the pain and loose a lot of weight.
It also happened to me.
So be persistent.
These things are best treated quickly and sooner, rather than later.

A: The cause of back pain varies from person to person. Spinal decompression may provide relief to your back pain and most pain sufferer opt for this treatment therapy. Q: What is this pain that I have in my back and chest?
I have bad back pain and a small bit of pain in the left of my chest. The pain in the left of my chest feels like sun burn but I have not been on holidays since last July and it rains here all the time in Ireland.
I also have a kinda bubbly feeling in my stomach.
My back pain really hurts when I sit down and it sometimes feels like someone is stabbing me in the chest.
I do not have any asthma or any other conditions.
I’m a 14 year old girl.
Any idea what this could be?
A: This question is not for answering on these pages accurately!
Go and see your Doctor asap and explain your symptoms. It could be caused by many different reasons.
Q: Chest Pain And Back Pain Can Someone Help Me?
Hello, I am a 16 year old male. I have been having sharp chest pain and back pain with these pulse sating feelings allover my body. I went to the er for the chest pain and they did a ekg and chest x ray and they said everything is ok. I am still having the chest pain it comes on randomly.
Does anyone know what this could possibly be? Could it be a pinched nerve in my back or anixety?
A: i think you should go to the emergency room again and tell them your not leaving untill they can make that pain stop (WITH PILLS OR NO PILLS) because god for bid, that can lead to a heart attack.
Q: What should I do if I have unexplainable upper back and chest pain?
For a week I’ve been having this horrible pain in my chest everytime I swallow. For 3 days the pain went to my back. So now I have both upper back and chest pain, everytime I swallow. I went to my doctor 3 times and to the Emergency Room once, but they have no solution. I tried Motrin, Mylanta, Advil, and Ibuprofen. Yet, no medicine works. Is there anything I can try or do to relieve this pain? I have not been able to eat or even drink a simple thing like water without pain.
A: Have you been vomiting?
Did you recently choke on something?
Stop the Advil/Ibuprofen (same thing) and take Mylanta at least 4 times a day (after meals and before bed). Eat 6 small meals a day instead of 3 large ones and try to always have something in your stomach. Thick foods may be easier to swallow (milk shakes, puddings etc.).Stay away from acidic, spicy and greasy foods.
Get a referral for a GI (gastrointestinal) specialist.
Q: Has anyone had pain in the back between the shoulders during a heart attack, instead of chest pains?
Pain silmilar to slipped vertebrate but no position moved to relieves it any at all? Cardio team keeps asking “Pain in back? No chest pain at all?”
Thanks
A: Among the many understood symptoms of cardiac disease like angina or AMI , the pain is typically in the back. Such is the case with pain in jaws.
Please consult your doctor.
Q: what i can do to get rid of chest and back pain?
I dont know if its trapped gas or whatever it just hurts when I breath in deep. the chest pain feel like its right under the heart not like on my side by my ribs or anything, and the back pain is more from the middle to the top almost like right behind where the pain in my chest is.
A: See your health care provider as soon as possible (cardiologist). Chest pain is serious symptom meaning “heart attack” to most people. Serious chest discomfort should usually be evaluated by a doctor.
However, pain can also come from the:
Chest wall–including muscles, ribs, and rib cartilage
Lungs and outside covering of the lungs–pleurisy
Outside covering of the heart–pericarditis
Gullet
Diaphragm
Spine
Skin
Organs in the upper part of the abdomen
Do any of these conditions exist?
Chest pain associated with shortness of breath
Irregular pulse
Sweating or dizziness
Severe pain
Nausea
Chest or back pain that occurs as soon as a person swallows food or liquid may resemble the pain of heart disease, both are often perceived as a burning sensation or a tightness under the breastbone (sternum). Alternatively, the chest pain associated with esophageal disorders may be perceived as severe squeezing that occurs along with difficult swallowing hot or cold beverages. This type of pain may result from esophageal muscle disorders, damage to the inner lining (mucosa) of the esophagus, infections (bacterial, viral, or fungal) of the throat, or tumors. I hope this helps you. And good luck.
Q: What causes back and chest pain in teen?
I’m a teen and experienced severe back and chest pain that seemed to move in location in response to physical movement. It was extremely painful and hard to breath, but I did not have an irregular or fast heartbeat. It happened about four times in an hour and then went completely away and it’s been more than a day, but now I have severe cold symptoms and a low fever. Any idea what it is? I thought pneumonia or bronchitis?
A: The back and chest problems could be from having heavy backpacks with all your books in them. I have the same problem and I am still suffering from some of those symptoms and I believe it is from carrying heavy backpacks for all those years that we have been in school.
Q: Can upper back pain and chest pain/muscle pain come from coughing too much and for too long?
I started with a cold/cough about a month ago. About 2 weeks ago, the cough was still going and my chest wall and muscles were hurting pretty bad. I went to a doc who told me it was just from all of the coughing. Since then, the cough is still here, and now in addition my upper back is hurting a lot when I cough. Should I go back to the doc?
A: If the pain becomes unbearable I would go for a doctor visit. BUT you can experience all your symptoms from coughing.
You can break ribs from coughing hard. When you start to cough really hard, hold a bed PILLOW in front of your chest. It will lessen the pain from the cough.
Drink plenty of fluids. Believe it or not, the fluids help flush your body out. (water or juice only)
An Xray would clear your mind. If you continue or start running a temperature over normal I would phone the doctor.
Q: Experiencing Chest/Back pain -Can this be a heart attack warning sign at age 21?
Hi, a little over a week ago week ago, I suddenly starting getting terrible back pains around the center of my back. After about 5 days they started to lessen and go away but now I am experiencing a heaviness in my chest right below my left pectoral muscle for a few days. However, it is not severe. Could this be symptoms of a heart attack at age 21? Over the past year, I’ve been eating very fatty/fried foods rich in saturated fats and cholesterol (lots of pizza, cheeseburgers, pasta in vodka sauce, etc.) and as a kid I used to get chest pains occasionally when I would breathe in very deeply that would come and go. (which is not the current problem, I am able to breathe in deeply without pain)
Here’s some additional info about me
-I just turned 21 years old
-Male
-6′4″ 198lbs (194cm 89kg)
-Moderately active
-I do not smoke
-There is no history of heart disease in my family
Thank you
A: No, it’s highly doubtful that your symptoms indicate cardiac or heart problems. Chest pain can arise from any number of reasons. Heartburn, strained or pulled muscle, anxiety or panic attacks, etc.
A the pain of a heart attack is more akin a crushing feeling around the chest. Think of an elephant sitting on your chest. This pain can often move to either arm (more especially the left), the should, and even your jaw. People in their 20’s and 30’s can suffer heart attacks but it’s very rare and often due to major heart disorders and/or extremely high cholesterol.
It sounds as if you just having something more along the lines of chest muscle pain if your feeling just in the left pectoral. Any chest pain should be mentioned to your Doctor though and followed up on. You can do what’s called a stress test to check for blocked arteries. You have a dye injected into you and take some before and after x-rays after running on a trend mill. These x-rays can help determined if you have blocked off arteries. It may be worth the peace of mind and help you get over your pains.
Q: I am wondering if this back/chest pain is likely related to my heart, lungs, or a pulled muscle or something?
The pain is difficult to describe because it could be mistaken for chest pain, but it would be on the back side of my chest (if that makes any sense). It is still an internal pain just on the back side. It isn’t your typical back pain. It feels like soreness, but depending on my movement it does become sharp. This is the third day. I hate going to the doctor only to be told, “oh its probably just a pulled muscle, wait a couple of days and come back if it persists.” Meanwhile I have taken a day off, drove there, and payed a copay. Thats another story though. If this is likely serious, that is nothing to me! I just am not sure it is or not. It does feel like it could be some type of muscle injury or maybe even very very severe gas. I am becoming concerned thought because this is the third day. The pain is more towards the right side of my body. Thanks for any advice or suggestions as to the possible cause.
A: I would say the key to your question is that the pain intensifies with movement. This is usually not indicative of cardiac problems. Have you tried any over the counter meds for pain relief? If it is not relieved with meds I would suggest a trip to the Dr. but it does seem like muscle or back problem.
Q: What are some reasons for this back and chest pain?
I’m 30 year old female and healthy. I woke up at 3 am in pain, in my upper back (spine) and middle chest (sternum). I thought it was the shirt I was sleeping in or the way I was sleeping (on my side, shoulders caving inward). I’m finding the pain shooting from my upper spin
A: LadyL,
I think you were onto it (in part) when you mentioned the way you were sleeping. The chest and ribcage are intimately linked to the spine and its health. Its almost certainly an issue of upper body posture while sleeping and while upright.
Here are some things you can try in bed:
- Since you sleep on your side, put a small towel roll (hand towel) just above your hip on your side.
- Put a thin pillow where your mattress sags the most to level things out.
Here are some things to try when upright:
- Pull your head back (don’t tilt it back) such that you have a bit of a double chin, and make a habit of keeping it there.
- Rotate your shoulders forward and up and around and let them settle low and as far back as they’ll stay, and get used to them staying back there.
- One other thing you should do is imagine hanging by your teeth, like you were a trapeze artist at the circus, this is when you get up from your chair or first sit down.
There are other things you can do and I know a great resource for further investigation. I will post a link below so you can dig deeper if you are interested.
Good luck ditching this back pain,
John
Q: I always have lower back pains and chest pain/tightness,anything serious?
my lower back pains is especially in the morning when i wake up. It feels more like i have been bending at a odd angle tiredness. But some times i will feel better after i urinate.
Sometimes sudden chest pain/tightness, especially when breathing, hard to breathe properly.
A: Well back pain upon waking says you need a new mattress the one you are sleeping on now is not helping you keep your spine in alignment. Once you start moving around you get the kinks out and that is why you feel better.
When you get chest pain more than once a day, it might be more than a muscle cramp, that you should talk to your doctor about today!
